Nikolas Kozloff: Is South America the Answer to Edward Snowden’s Prayers?

Much to the chagrin of the Obama administration, the unlikely Evo Morales incident has made Washington look like an international bully. In Germany, there are growing calls to assist Snowden, and meanwhile, South America may prove more receptive to the young whistleblower.

Fly Or Die: Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

Screen Shot 2013-07-03 at 10.19.00 PM

We first caught wind of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active back in May before it had been announced.

Ruggedized smartphones aren’t always so tantalizing, but seeing that the Galaxy S4 Active is a variant of the Samsung flagship Galaxy S4, we thought it wise to bring the little guy in for an episode of Fly or Die. This week’s episode is particularly special, as we’re joined by Engadget’s Brian Heater.

So what do Brian and I think of the waterproof Galaxy S4?

Personally, I find the design language to be a bit loud, and it’s unclear why the rugged version of the phone can’t come in the same standard black and white as opposed to grey, blue and orange. We’re also unsure if the flashy screws on the backside of the device are necessary to keep the phone shockproof and waterproof, or if they’re just to portray ruggedness. If the former, excellent. The latter? Not so much.

On the brighter side, we’re both quite pleased to see a manufacturer ruggedize a hot-selling, full-featured phone as opposed to locking down a mid-range device with bulky armor.

As for waterproof smartphones in the future? Please! Keep them coming!

Two flies.

Samsung’s estimated Q2 2013 profits top out at $8.33 billion

Right on schedule, Samsung has released its earnings estimates for Q2 2013 ahead of its full announcement later this month. And, as you might expect, the company made a lot of money: a tidy profit of 9.5 trillion won, or $8.33 billion dollars, to be exact. Naturally, that record-setting number is due in no small part to the success of the Galaxy S 4 and a strong showing by its components division as well. Should the estimate prove perfectly accurate, Q2 2013 will have been a significant improvement over last quarter’s $6.4 billion profit, and a massive $3 billion improvement over Q2 of 2012. Of course, we’ll get to see its full slate of numbers come July 26th when the financials are officially revealed, but it’s looking like Sammy’s doing just fine.

U.S. Officials Approach Egypt Crisis With Caution

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and his national security team tread delicately Thursday in the aftermath of the ouster of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, urging the restive nation to quickly return authority to a democratically elected civilian government and avoid violence. The administration still declined to take sides in the volatile developments as Egypt’s military installed an interim government leader.

Ahead of Washington’s Fourth of July fireworks, Obama met with his national security team in the White House situation room for briefings on their calls to Egyptian leaders and other partners in the region, National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said in a statement.

Terry Marotta: Remembering Back

When I was a child, July Fourth brought out talk at the family table about the Second World War. Our grownups spoke of the gasoline rations and the saving of tinfoil and so on, but to us kids, it was just one other thing that had happened to them, those inscrutable adults.
