Matthew Perry: ‘Friends’ Star Opens Up About His Struggle With Pills And Alcohol

Playing Chandler Bing on “Friends” for 10 years made Matthew Perry one of the most lovable guys on TV. And while he was cracking jokes and winning Monica’s (Courteney Cox) heart,he was struggling with addiction.

In an interview with People magazine, the actor opened up about the difficulties that came along with being in the spotlight.

“I was on ‘Friends’ from age 24 to 34. I was in the white-hot flame of fame. The six of us were just everywhere all the time. From an outsider’s perspective, it would seem like I had it all. It was actually a very lonely time for me because I was suffering from alcoholism,” he said. “It was going on before ‘Friends’, but it’s a progressive disease.”

George Zimmerman Verdict: Miami Leaders Promote Peace To Avoid Riot (VIDEO)

After an all-white jury acquitted a Miami cop in the death of Arthur McDuffie in 1980, the city exploded in a burning, three-mile-wide riot that lasted three days, caused $100 million in damage, resulted in 18 deaths, and inspired curfews and gunpoint checks by the National Guard.

In the coming weeks, a mostly white jury will decide whether to acquit George Zimmerman of first degree murder charges in the controversial shooting death of Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin.

Local police and community leaders are already cautioning against any actions that could escalate to violence or destruction, even turning to social media and Miami Heat stars for help.

Obama’s Executive Order To Combat Wildlife Trafficking Lauded By Conservation Groups

Less than a week after making an unprecedented climate change speech at Georgetown University, President Barack Obama took another historic step for the environment by signing an executive order to combat wildlife trafficking.

The order pledges $10 million to combat the illegal wildlife trade, a presidential task force that will develop a national strategy and a promise to work with international groups and governments to crack down on trafficking.

“The survival of protected wildlife species such as elephants, rhinos, great apes, tigers, sharks, tuna, and turtles has beneficial economic, social, and environmental impacts that are important to all nations,” it reads. “Wildlife trafficking reduces those benefits while generating billions of dollars in illicit revenues each year, contributing to the illegal economy, fueling instability, and undermining security.”

Kafka Birthday: A Letter From Franz Kafka To His Father

Today would have been Franz Kafka’s 130th birthday. The following is an excerpt of a letter that Kafka wrote to his father, Hermann Kafka, in 1919. He was hoping that it might be a peace offering, as the father/son relationship had disintegrated and fallen apart over the years. Kafka gave it to his mother to deliver, but she never did, returning it to Kafka instead. He died of tuberculosis five years later.

Dearest Father,

Hoodie Travel Pillow

For those of us who tend to travel a whole lot, you would know that getting enough rest along the journey is key to ensure that you arrive at your destination as fresh as possible, and this mantra is even more important if you happen to cross several time zones along the way. Forget about the in-flight entertainment, get some sleep. The thing is, our necks tend to feel plenty of strain when we sleep on those contoured seats that never seem to fit the curves along your body, and since most of us travel cattle class, here is a little something that might help you out – the £19.99 Hoodie Travel Pillow.

The Hoodie Travel Pillow will arrive in black, gray and red colors, where it boasts of an inflatable neck-brace style support alongside an integrated hood. Being made out of comfortable fleece material, it comes with a special ‘privacy’ drawstring to stash away your identity in a jiffy, not to mention ensuring that harsh fluorescent light or sunlight will be kept at bay. Something tells me that version 2.0 of this, assuming it ever rolls off the production line, would be accompanied by a pair of built-in speakers for some private entertainment.

Nokia ‘Eros,’ Mars, HTC One Mini and One Max name checked in O2 document

Nokia EOS, Nokia Mars, HTC One Mini and One Max name checked in O2 document

Is the 4.7-inch HTC One not the right size for your hands? Do Nokia’s latest Lumia phones not appeal to your design sensibilities? Well, a leaked document from O2 Germany lists four unannounced devices reportedly coming out later this year that just might satisfy your very particular tastes. The HTC One Mini is on there (a 4.3-inch phone we’re already well familiar with) as is the One Max, which rumors suggest will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and a 5.9-inch 1080p display. Moving on to Nokia, there’s the “Eros,” though that might be a typo for the 41-megapixel “EOS” that’s expected to be announced on the 11th. There’s also the “Mars,” which is the first time we’ve heard that name. Check out the full list after the break.

Hand Tree is an Air Purifier That You Can Wear

Smog, haze, smoke, exhaust… The atmosphere is full of pollutants these days. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it. You could go out and face the world wearing a mask, or you could just slip the Hand Tree around your wrist the next time you take a stroll – assuming it existed.

Wearable Filter

The Hand Tree is a concept design by Alexandr Kostin that marries wearable technology with a relatively common appliance, the air purifier. The bracelet is essentially a wearable air purifier that filters air on the go, surrounding its wearer with fresh air that’s minus all the unpleasant smells and particulates normally found in city air.

It’s a neat concept but I think the task of shrinking a normally bulky air purifier down to wrist size would be very, very challenging.

The Hand Tree is a semi-finalist in the Electrolux Design Lab 2013.
