Sony’s FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player will land in living rooms and on retailer shelves in two weeks, the company announced Monday.

The media player, which was unveiled in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, will play ultra-high-resolution content on 4K TVs, which have four times the number of pixels as a regular HD TV.

However, the box, which retails for $699, is compatible only with Sony 4K TVs. Sony is offering owners of its X900A sets a $200 introductory discount on the media player’s price. The media player will be bundled with 10 feature films and video shorts in 4K resolution, which Sony said has an estimated value of $300.

Amazon opens GameCircle integration to all Android devices

Amazon opens GameCircle integration to all Android devices

Looks like gamers with Amazon Kindle tablets will no longer be competing amongst themselves… because starting today, Amazon’s proprietary GameCircle platform is now open to all Android devices. The backend cloud service has offered up leader boards, achievements and progress saves to Kindle users for a year now, and as of today, it also supports conflict resolution between mobile devices. The reveal comes at an interesting time, which parallels the recent launch of Google Play game services. Naturally, it’s reasonable to speculate that Amazon’s move could be an attempt to keep its service relevant. More than 500 games currently support GameCircle, but for all Android users to benefit, developers must first integrate the latest API into their games. At least they now have a bit of motivation to do just that.

What The Most Popular Web Browser Is in Each Country in the World

What The Most Popular Web Browser Is in Each Country in the World

The green is Chrome. The blue is Internet Explorer. The orange-ish color is Firefox. If you can see any red or grey that would be Opera and Safari, respectively. And though I personally believe all browsers have become horrible in their own ways, having Chrome at the top of most country’s usage list according to Statcounter is certainly a lot better than the alternatives ruling the world. Good job world. Enjoy the suffering southern tip of Africa and all of China and Greenland.

Best Buy may be Pebble’s first brick-and-mortar retailer, leaked image suggests

Best Buy

According to information obtained by 9To5Mac, Best Buy may begin selling the Pebble smartwatch as early as this Sunday. The outlet’s sources claim management briefed them that their stores would start selling the watches, and one supplied the above image. This picture of Best Buy’s internal inventory system clearly shows an in stock date of July 7th, or, this Sunday, when the firm’s weekly circular goes out and its new sales start. If this news is correct, it would mark Best Buy as the first — and at this time, only — brick-and-mortar retailer of the “appcessory.” Also gleaned from the submitted photo is news that the smartwatch won’t be eligible for home delivery, but we can’t imagine not being able to order online and then pick-up in-store. We’ve contacted Best Buy for more info and will update if we hear back.

Windows Store now home to 100,000 apps

Windows Store now home to 100,000 apps

Microsoft couldn’t help mentioning last week that the Windows Store was on the cusp of hitting 100,000 total apps, and now the firm’s announced on Twitter that the shop has officially reached the mark. Redmond may not best its competitors in the sheer number of applications available on their respective storefronts, but it did manage to rack up the apps much faster. While it took roughly a year and a half for Apple’s App Store to score the same badge, and approximately two trips around the sun for the Android Market, the Windows Store has arrived at the figure in just eight months. With a healthy app shop and Windows 8.1 on the horizon, Ballmer and Co. must be pleased with their eight-month-old OS.
