Apple Supplier Accused Of Worker Abuse In China

Apple Supplier Accused Of Worker Abuse In China

This isn’t the first time a worker abuse accusation have been leveled against an Apple supplier based in China. Foxconn has previously been in the spotlight after a string of worker suicides, allegedly because of poor living and harsh working conditions. Pegatron, another one of Apple’s suppliers in China, has been accused of worker abuse this time around. China Labor Watch, a non-profit based in New York, is behind these allegations of environmental and safety violations, poor living conditions and blocking of workers’ pay and ID cards.

Apple has said it a statement that it is “committed to providing safe and fair working conditions” throughout its entire supply chain, adding that they have conducted 15 audits at Pegatron’s factories in China since 2007. Apple also said that they have conducted surprise audits over the last 18 months. These alleged violations are not only against Chinese law, but also against Apple’s supplier policy. The company has confirmed that some labor brokers are not releasing workers’ ID cards and it demands Pegatron to ensure that this practice is stopped. Both Apple and Pegatron have said that they will fully investigate the allegations made in China Labor Watch’s report and will take relevant actions.

Nexus 7 review (2013)

Nexus 7 review 2013

Who knew affordable tablets could be so good? That was our reaction after reviewing the original Nexus 7 when it went on sale last year for $200; at the time, comparably specced products were going for at least $100 more. So, when this year’s follow-up came out at a slightly higher price ($229 and up), we were a little concerned the higher cost would dissuade penny-pinching shoppers from taking the plunge.

After we got a good look at the spec sheet, though, we quickly forgave Google and ASUS for their decision. For the money, you get a gorgeous 1,920 x 1,200 IPS display, 2GB of RAM, a rear camera, a quad-core processor, wireless charging and the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean 4.3. Now that we’ve had the opportunity to take the new and improved Nexus 7 for a spin, we’re ready to tackle all the obvious questions: is this still the best budget tablet on the market? How does it compare to the iPad mini? And does the spec sheet actually reflect real-world performance? Let’s find out.

Pro-Marijuana Ad Pulled At Weekend NASCAR Race To Avoid Upsetting ‘Family’ Atmosphere

A commercial touting marijuana as an alternative to beer was pulled from displays outside a weekend NASCAR race after just a few airings.

The ad, seen above, was purchased by the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) — the nation’s largest pro-marijuana legalization advocacy group — and was celebrated by the organization as the first time a pro-pot campaign would be seen at a major sporting event. Organizers for the Brickyard 400 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway disputed that claim, noting that the boards set to display the commercial were not technically on stadium grounds. When officials with the company that had allowed MPP to purchase air time caught wind of its pro-marijuana message, they scrambled to take it down.

“We decided to pull ultimately because it’s not obviously a great fit for the NASCAR audience, for the family kind of oriented audience, that’s why we decided to pull the ad,” Grazie Media CEO Vanessa Wojtala told WISH.

Centaurs In Space May Be Comets, NASA Space Telescope Observations Suggest (VIDEO)

What exactly are space centaurs? For years, researchers have been debated whether those mysterious celestial bodies, which orbit the sun between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune, are asteroids or comets.

But new observations from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) suggest that most centaurs are comets.

“Our data point to a cometary origin for most of the objects, suggesting they are coming from deeper out in the solar system,” study author Dr. James Bauer, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a written statement. “Just like the mythical creatures, the centaur objects seem to have a double life.”

Sony And Panasonic Aim To Release 300GB Optical Discs By 2015

Sony And Panasonic Aim To Release 300GB Optical Discs By 2015

It has been announced today that both Sony and Panasonic are joining forces to create the next generation standard for optical discs. The objective with these discs is to expand their potential for long term data storage. Both companies hope to improve their development efficiency through technologies held by each company, their plan is to release optical discs touting a recording capability of at least 300GB by 2015. Sony and Panasonic will continue to hold discussions regarding the specifications related to the development of this new standard.

The focus is primarily towards professional users and businesses that need to archive massive amounts of data. As far as the individual user is concerned, many now store their data in the cloud, so the market potential is definitely greater with businesses for 300GB optical discs. While we’re on the subject of cloud storage, it is possible that cloud-based data centers can use these discs for storing data. To put things in perspective, the current Blu-ray discs are capable of storing 25GB and 50GB on single and dual layer discs respectively. Both Sony and Panasonic are well known manufacturers of Blu-ray discs.
