Konami Code Tattoo Is So Cool It May Give 30 Extra Lives

Konami Code Tattoo Is So Cool It May Give 30 Extra LivesOne of the most well known cheat codes in video game history has to be the infamous Konami code. Nearly all gamers should know this code by heart, and even some non-gamers probably know it since it’s made its way to a number of products as an easter egg. Vogue UK and the Chromebook Pixel are two products that recently used the Konami code, although if you for some reason need help remembering it, then you should either date this gentleman or be him.

Kevin Pacheco sent over an image of his brand-new tattoo to the folks over at Fashionably Geek, which he says he designed himself. As you can see from the tattoo, the classic NES directional pad, “B” and “A” buttons as well as the word “Start” are all true to their original source. For those of you who are yelling at the screen saying, “WHERE’S THE SELECT?!?”, Kevin reminds us that the select is only used when a second Contra player is present. If there’s no second player, then there’s no need for the select button to be used. Keep that in mind the next time you’re playing video games trivia as it may make or break your street cred as a gamer.

Samsung announces another dual-screen flip-phone: the Galaxy Golden

DNP Samsung Galaxy Golden targets older Koreans, thanks them for being friends

Samsung clearly thinks the flip-phone is here to stay. After all, why else would it launch two new clamshells in a matter of weeks? Today, the tech giant debuted the Galaxy Golden, which is strikingly similar to the Folder that leaked under an almost identical model number just prior to the Hennessey’s official arrival. The Golden sports dual 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screens, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and an 8MP camera. There’s a slew of features aimed at older folks too, like an “easy mode” that can optimize the home screen, a pedometer that works with S Health, a business card recognition function and even an FM radio. Koreans in their golden years with a spare 790,000 won (if Google Translate is to be trusted), or just over $700, might appreciate these tailored features, as they’ll probably be on-board with the aging form factor, too.

LG Exec Talks Tablet, Smartwatch, Phablet, Firefox OS And Windows Phone Plans For This Year And Next

    lg-watch-phone

LG looks like it might be about to spread its bets around the table, according to a new interview with Bulgarian LG communications executive Dimitar Vulev. The interview from Dnevnik.bg (via Engadget) offers up an unusually transparent look at LG’s upcoming product plans, as Vulev details what the company is working on both for the end of the year and beyond.

The comms director says that LG is keenly aware of the phablet phenomenon, as evidenced by the Optimus View and Optimus G Pro, and adds that next year there will be “an even bigger phone.” This is also seen as a transition to the company focusing on larger-screen tablet devices, including a device to be launched “probably” by the end of the year. LG had previously shuttered its tablet efforts, but Vulev says it’s time to re-enter since it’s a “growing market” that has become much larger in recent years.

Android remains the primary focus of LG’s efforts in mobile, he said, but Windows Phone devices are also in the pipeline, though likely not on tap for this year. When and if we see a Windows Phone LG smartphone make it to market depends on how Microsoft develops the OS, Vulev explained. This mirrors what LG India Managing Director Kown Soon said back in July about Windows Phone 8. LG previously made Windows Phone 7 devices, but like its tablet efforts, production was put on hold after shipment shortfalls.

LG is also working on a Firefox OS phone, diversifying its software picture even further, Vulev said. So far, the open, web standards-based Firefox OS mobile platform hasn’t really had a champion among the core, big-name smartphone OEMs, so LG releasing one in early 2014 (if Vulev’s information is correct) could really help boost its presence and visibility.

Vulev also said that LG will be releasing a smartwatch, perhaps sometime next year, to debut first in the U.S. market. It could come with a flexible display, and while he admitted that LG’s previous GD910 watch phone was not successful, he suggested that the market is much more primed now for such a product than in the past.

While most companies aren’t so candid about future unreleased products, LG’s regional execs have a history of being rather more forthright than most, so it’s likely this is a genuine peek behind the curtain. Whether it’s a smart, systematic bet on a number of different horses, or a scattershot attempt at relevance, will only be proven out by the quality of these products when they do actually arrive.

Netflix’s new ‘My List’ replaces queues, lets users worldwide bookmark their favorites

Netflix's new 'My List' replaces queues, lets users worldwide bookmark their favorites

Netflix’s Watch Instantly streaming service in the US started with the same queue-based experience users were familiar with from its disc-by-mail rentals for bookmarking titles to watch later. But, internationally, the option has never existed. Now the experience is changing everywhere, as Netflix replaces the old queues with “My List.” Outside the US subscribers will notice the biggest change, as they’re able to curate their own viewing lists instead of relying solely on search or the service’s automatically generated genre lists. Otherwise the selection process is mostly the same as we’ve come to expect, with a “+ My List” button single click adding it to the list of up to 500 items in each user’s profile. My List should pop up on individual accounts over the next couple of weeks, check after the break for a breakdown of all the incoming changes and a quick video preview.

Verizon LG Enact leaks in press image, proves QWERTY sliders still exist

Verizon LG Enact leaks in press image, proves that the reported death of the QWERTY slider was exaggerated

According to serial leak merchant @evleaks, the LG Enact is days away from making an official appearance on Verizon, a carrier that reckons there’s still life in the ‘ole keyboard-packed form factor, with a phone that looks a whole lot like the Android sliders of the past. Yep, LG’s new Android smartphone houses an increasingly rare full QWERTY keyboard, a pretty old-school four-key capacitive button layout, and a mix of Verizon and LG-skinned app icons. However, we’re already wary of how the Enact’s keyboard will handle — with space at a premium on these keyboards, that substantial border either side of the keys could result in some cramped thumbs. However, at this stage we’re not certain of the screen-size and dimensions of the slider, so we’ll hold our judgement until we get to tap away on it in real life.

Bing For Schools Launches, Ditching Ads And Rewarding Searches With Surface RT Tablets For Schools

    students-img

Microsoft previewed its Bing for Schools initiative back in June, an opt-in program for educational institutions that allows schools to sign up to offer a version of Bing to their students that drops advertisements and increases privacy protections. The Bing for Schools program launches for K through 12 schools today, and as an added bonus, using it will earn users points that their school can redeem for free Surface RT tablets.

Students, parents and anyone else who wants to contribute get credits via Microsoft’s Bing Rewards program for using the search engine, and can add those to a general pool for a specific school. Once a school hits 30,000 points, it gets a free Surface RT tablet, complete with a Touch Cover (the one with the capacitive keyboard built-in). The conversion is roughly such that about 60 users contributing to a school and using Bing as their default search engine can earn a school a Surface RT per month, which actually sounds pretty good.

Of course, the Surface RT is not the finest of all devices under the sun, and some argue that it probably shouldn’t exist to begin with. But at least they’ll do some good in schools, as opposed to sitting around on store shelves. And for Microsoft, the benefit is getting more hardware in the hands of educational institutions and students; that’s a highly attractive market to any computer or software maker.

The Bing for Schools pilot project launches today in a number of districts that have signed up to take part in the pilot project, which covers over 800,000 students going into the new school year. In addition to the benefits listed above, the program also offers automatic strict filtering of adult content, as well as lesson plans based on the Bing home page, broken up into three categories targeted at grades K-4, 5-8 and 9-12.

If you’re already Binging, you might as well sign up and support a school, no matter where you happen to be located – turning your searches for cat gifs into tech bonuses for kids is never a bad thing.

LG exec: tablet, phablet, smartwatch and Firefox OS device coming soon

    lg-backing-off-tablets-focus-on-cellphones

LG’s mobile communications head in Bulgaria, Dimitar Valev, has laid out some of the company’s key plans in an interview with Dnevnik.bg. For starters, he confirmed that the company will fire up its temporarily mothballed tablet lines with a new model, likely the 9.8-inch V500 we saw at the FCC earlier today. On the smartphone side, LG will trump its 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro model with a 6-inch handset and release a Firefox OS device early next year. Most intriguingly, he said the company would give the smartwatch category another kick at the can, despite indifference to LG’s GD910 Watch Phone model several years ago — adding that the device might use flexible LCD tech. We’re not sure if Mr. Valev was speaking out of turn, but if accurate, it’ll be interesting to see how the new hardware pans out — especially LG’s take on Firefox OS.
