Ellie Kinnaird, Nine-Term State Senator, Resigns Over North Carolina Voter ID Law

A North Carolina state senator is resigning after nine terms in office to protest the state’s new voter ID law, which Gov. Pat McCrory (R) signed into law earlier this month.

State Sen. Ellie Kinnaird (D) announced Monday that she would leave the statehouse, citing frustration with the state legislature’s Republican majority.

“From the Republicans’ denial of health care security for our people to their failure to promote a vibrant work force through support for our education systems at all levels and from their tax cuts for the wealthy and their tax increases for the poor and middle class to their efforts to deny people their right to vote, they have been pursuing a divisive and, I think, immoral agenda,” Kinnaird wrote in a statement on her website.

Watch People Get Flung at a Mountain by a Giant Human Slingshot

What a great summer tradition this is. Every so often, these wonderful folks plop down a gigantic human slingshot and fire people at stuff. Sometimes it’s down a slip and slide and into a lake, sometimes it’s that, just double. This time it’s at a mountain, while eating pizza. It still looks like a lot of fun. [YouTube]

No End To Nook’s Bad News As Revenues Take A 20% Dive For Q1 2014, But New Hardware On The Way

    nook windows 8

Barnes & Noble can’t stem the losses from its digital books and device division, as the Nook department saw revenues drop 20.2 percent year over year according to the company’s just-released quarterly earnings report. Nook earned $153 million, and that’s up sequentially from $108 million despite the yearly decline.

Nook hardware fared the worst, dropping 23.1 percent year over year while sales of digital content for Nook apps and devices dropped 15.8 percent. B&N partly blames the decrease in content sales on poor Nook tablet and reader sales, but also on outside factors. Specifically, B&N calls out the fact that this year there wasn’t either a Hunger Games or a 50 Shades of Grey trilogy to drive consumer content purchases. Retail was down 9.9 percent year over year, with revenues of $1 billion total, covering business from physical and online stores.

Overall, the company seemed keen to express continued support of its Nook offerings via the earnings release. Board Chairman Leonard Riggio suspended an offer he had planned to make on the company’s retail business, saying that instead B&N needs to focus on building its 10 million Nook owning customers, and to increase sales of Nook devices both in stores and online. That means Nook will continue to operate in tandem with the retail business, rather than the two divisions being split up into separate companies.

Nook Media CEO Michael P. Huseby also said in a statement that the Nook line will continue to be offered “at the best values in the marketplace,” and that “at least one” new Nook product will be coming for the holiday season, with others in development for beyond that. No mention was made of the plan revealed last time around to open up Nook development to outside OEMs, but the conference call is at 10 AM ET this morning, so we’ll update if any new information comes to light at that time.

    Building Block Aircraft Carrier

building-block-acIn this day and age, despite the massive advancements made in warfare, having an aircraft carrier as part of your military power is still a crucial element. After all, no country is large enough to be able to have military bases placed all over the world so that they can respond to threats in the shortest time possible, which is why an aircraft carrier is such an important element to project your power across the seven seas. Isn’t 70% of the earth covered in water, anyways? Just to underline the importance of the aircraft carrier in any navy to your little one, you might want to start him or her young with the $299.95 Building Block Aircraft Carrier.

This happens to be the building block kit which creates a 44″ long aircraft carrier that will be able to be the king of the seas – at least in a playroom. Building it is no mean feat, as life for the aircraft carrier starts off in a mock dry dock on a table or floor thanks to a detailed instruction guide which will let you know how to put together all 3,016 colored pieces in order to make up the streamlined hull, overhanging deck, and island. Heck, the Building Block Aircraft Carrier itself even comes with nine jet aircraft that are supported by an ammunition truck which will carry various ordnances that can be snapped under the wings of each jet. On the detailed deck, you will find a ski-slope ramp for speedier take-offs, working jet blast deflectors, and point defense weaponry which take up their positions on port and starboard sides. Heck, I’d want one for myself, too!

‘Hey Girl’ Puts Ryan Gosling on Every Website

Is your feed full of stupid memes you don’t care for and pictures of your friends’/relatives’/acquaintances’ babies? Are you sick of looking at selfies and random people making that annoying duck face on your Facebook feed?

If the images on your screen are getting too much to take, then you might want to install the Hey Girl app in your browser.

    hey girl ryan gosling

Hey Girl automatically swaps out all of the photos on a website with images of Ryan Gosling. There’s some of him acting goofy, there’s a couple of screenshots from movies, and there’s one where he’s canoodling with a girl (don’t you wish that were you?)

    Hey Girl

The app was developed by Katherine Champagne when she was at Dev Bootcamp Chicago. At the start, the app involved using Channing Tatum but Katherine eventually switched to Ryan Gosling.

Katherine explains: “I hope that heygirl.io inspires more women to get into web development- there needs to be more of us, ladies! It’s not all math, it’s not boring – as I hope heygirl.io evidences, I’ve found programming to be an incredible creative outlet.”

You can install the Hey Girl bookmarklet or Chrome Extension here.

9 Adorable Cartoons That Illustrate the Most Productive Types of Space

“Going to work” means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but for most of us? Welp, it probably involves lots of sedentary hours sitting with pretty poor posture at a desk that’s not quite the right height, staring and staring and staring at a screen. But! The times, they are a-changin’, and employers—and designers—are recognizing that there’s lots more to a day in the life than sit, stand, and coffee break.
