Why The Snooze Button Is The Worst Invention Ever (VIDEO)

Most of us are very familiar with that feeling of desperation when the alarm goes off in the morning. Our bodies seem to beg us for just a few more minutes, and so we press snooze — a harmless act, right? Not so fast.

As it turns out, those extra minutes of sleep may not be helping us at all. Hitting snooze can disrupt our circadian rhythms, making it even more difficult for us to get up. Dr. Christopher Winter and Dr. Michael Breus explain why the snooze button is may make you even more cranky in the clip above.

Derek Wolfe Neck Injured: Broncos DE Taken Away In Amublance, Evaluated For Spinal Injury

SEATTLE (AP) — Denver defensive end Derek Wolfe has been placed on a backboard and taken away in an ambulance after sustaining a neck injury in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Wolfe was hurt with 9 minutes left in the quarter and on Seattle’s first offensive drive Saturday night. He was hurt being blocked on a running play where Seattle’s Robert Turbin gained 8 yards. The Broncos said Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury and had movement in all of his extremities.

Wolfe was initially cut on the play by Seattle’s Luke Willson. As Wolfe was getting back up, fullback Michael Robinson collided with Wolfe appearing to compress his head and neck. Wolfe remained on the ground and appeared to be moving his legs initially, but medical personnel strapped him to a backboard and took him away in an ambulance.

Honda teases upcoming NSX with Concept-GT hybrid race car

Honda teases upcoming NSX with ConceptGT hybrid race car

Honda’s got a lot riding on the upcoming 2015 NSX hybrid (which will be sold in the US as an Acura). When it launched in 1990, the iconic first generation NSX took the sports car market by storm with an impressive (and affordable) combination of performance, comfort, design and build quality. Production ended in 2005 with the company shifting its focus towards hybrids and other green vehicles. As such, Honda enthusiasts have eagerly been awaiting the NSX replacement. While the new flagship is still being developed, the company just announced the NSX Concept-GT, a hybrid race car which is designed to compete in the Japanese SUPER GT series (GT500 class). Unlike the street version, which features a mid-mounted V6 and three electric motors, the Concept-GT boasts a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection I4 paired with a “racing hybrid system“. When it launches next year, the technology-packed NSX will compete with vehicles like BMW’s i8 plug-in hybrid and Lexus’ LF-CC. %Gallery-slideshow72907%

These Grotesque, Dreamlike Portraits Are Gonna Stick With You

Well, this is terrifying. Italian video artist Donato Sansone creates nightmarish video portraits, in which ghoulish faces deteriorate into constantly shifting smoke. Each portrait, approximately 4 seconds long, shows a glimpse of a “painting in motion,” allowing time for the true horror of the image to sink in.

Part Francis Bacon, part David Lynch, Sansone’s surreal video visions manage to access the darkest depths of the imagination while looking strangely realistic. Sansone creates a sense of ghostly motion by applying Photoshop and After Effects to still images, letting their existence fade into the background. We agree with The Creators Project when they compared Sansone’s meling faces to “one of those beautiful car crash scenarios where you can’t look away even though it kind of makes your stomach do somersaults.

Check out some stills from the video portraits below, best perused with a nightlight and blankie.

What Would The Original Vamp Say To Her Therapist?

What if Irma Vep was one of us? Multimedia artist Michelle Handelman is out to pull iconic film vixen Irma Vep out of her mysterious, screen-dwelling existence and into the therapist’s office. It’s not easy being a vamp, after all.

“Irma Vep, the last breath” is a multichannel video installation composed of two stories. One tells of Irma Vep, the original vamp, a character from the film “Les Vampires,” complaining to her therapist. The second is Musidora, the actress who played Vep who, it is rumored, ended her life working anonymously as a ticket vendor despite her earlier goddess status.

Ask Engadget: best fitness accessory?

Ask Engadget whats the lightest laptop with discrete graphics

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Michelle, who’s worried about the lumber she’s carrying and if she can be doing more to exercise. If you’re looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

“I’m worried that I don’t get enough exercise, or even walk around enough during the working week. I’d love to be able to measure my activity and know when I’ve had a really slovenly day. Keep up the great work!”

Firstly, we’d say that there’s no one device that’s perfect for everyone. If you want motivation, then Strivv’s option of donating cash to charity the more activity you make is a great option. If you want pure data collection, then the Withings Pulse and Fitbit One are more likely to suit your tastes. Then you’ve got Jawbone’s Up and Nike’s Fuelband, which offer lifestyle features and stylish hardware to the mix. Of course, that’s just our brief summation, now let’s turn this over to the commenters and see what they say, eh?

Egypt: Islamists Hit Coptic Christian Churches, Torch Franciscan School

CAIRO — After torching a Franciscan school, Islamists paraded three nuns on the streets like “prisoners of war” before a Muslim woman offered them refuge. Two other women working at the school were sexually harassed and abused as they fought their way through a mob.

In the four days since security forces cleared two sit-in camps by supporters of Egypt’s ousted president, Islamists have attacked dozens of Coptic churches along with homes and businesses owned by the Christian minority. The campaign of intimidation appears to be a warning to Christians outside Cairo to stand down from political activism.
