It feels like we’ve been waiting for a big new version of Android forever; Jelly Bean is great, but it could do so much more. Surprise: it actually does! All you have to do is take matters into your own hands.
UniKey Founder Talks About The Future Of Access Control Ahead Of October Ship Date
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe UniKey Kevo has been a hot topic for the past year, its touch-triggered unlocking amazing the likes of investors, TV shows and retailers alike. The auto-lock system first appeared on an episode of “Shark Tank”, and shortly thereafter received a round of funding which brings the company’s total to $2.75 million.
We caught up with UniKey founder Phil Dumas at the ff Venture Capital office (ffVC is one of UniKey’s investors) to chat about the device being a pre-order and how to deal with competition.
But first, let’s clear up what exactly the UniKey Kevo does just in case you missed it. The Kevo uses Bluetooth 4.0 to identify you before unlocking your door, just with a touch. Unlike Lockitron, which can allow users to remotely lock and unlock their door, Kevo doesn’t support that function but rather focuses on proximity and convenience. Kevo users never have to reach in their pocket or wallet.
The company has a partnership with Kwikset, one of the largest lock manufacturers in the U.S. so that installation is quick and easy.
“We’re not the first company to unlock a door with a phone,” said Dumas. “But we are the first company to make the experience so much better than a traditional key. All you have to do is touch the lock.”
But what if you lose your phone? Well, Kevo is set up to let you log in through the web app or on a different device to gain access. Each Kevo also comes with a fob, with extra fobs available for $25 each.
Eventually, Unikey will move into other spaces, including automotive, air travel, professional settings, etc. to ensure that, one day, you’ll be able to throw out all your keys. There is also potential for Unikey to partner with home control and home automation companies in order to trigger certain events in the home based on a door locking or unlocking.
For now, however, the company is getting through its pre-order phase. If you’re interested in the $219 Kevo, you can pre-order at Amazon, Newegg, Home Depot, and Build.com. Shipping begins in October.
We don’t know about you, but we think 3D printing has gone completely nuts over the past couple of months in a very good way. But we think they all pale in comparison to what NASA just did with the help of 3D printing. They used 3D printing to create a part to be used in a friggin rocket! (more…)

Motorola promised that it was making a cheaper variant of the Moto X for developing markets, and we may have received our first glimpse of it today. A Sina Weibo user claims to have a photo of interchangeable back panels for the budget smartphone, suggesting that its buyers wouldn’t have to use tools like Moto Maker to get lively colors. There’s nothing shown of the device itself, but the poster does mention dual SIM support. If the parts are real, though, it could just be a matter of time before leaks reveal the rest of Motorola’s lower-cost handset.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on your mobile device, you’ll know Google has started to roll out a new logo for YouTube starting just a few weeks ago. Instead of the plump “YouTube” logo that we’ve all come to know, the application now has a red background with a play button placed in the middle of it, keeping things very simple. It looks like Google has further rolled out this change in its logo as both its Facebook and Twitter profiles now also adopt the simplistic look the mobile apps have portrayed. (more…)

In this modern, pixelated world, the computer keyboard has become a real everyday object, something we tend to touch more times than we realize. So why not seek out the best keyboard, one built from the features of lesser keyboards? That’s precisely what the CODE keyboard aims to do.
GameStop’s next-gen digital strategy doesn’t exist, because it doesn’t need to… yet
Posted in: Today's Chili“You’re asking me to… predict the future. I’m supposed to plan for the future.” That’s the non-answer GameStop president Tony Bartel spit out when I prodded him about the company’s digital strategy here at its annual consumer-facing EXPO in Las Vegas. And it’s clearly a touchy subject. It’s not that Bartel refuses to acknowledge and embrace a download-only world — indeed, he believes “things are going to go [fully] digital” — but in his own estimation, that shift isn’t tied to the next-gen of consoles. For a retailer built upon the buy/sell/trade business model for videogames and hardware, GameStop doesn’t appear to have a well-laid digital strategy in the works, nor does it necessarily need to at the moment. With both Sony and Microsoft committing to a friendly used disc-based games policy for their respective black boxes, GameStop’s been given a temporary buffer from the inevitable, allowing it additional time to feel out the digital way forward with a serendipitous mobile crutch.
