NASA’s 3D-Printed Rocket Injector Spits Fire Like a Dragon

Last month, NASA successfully tested its first 3D-printed rocket injector. The test was successful and the pictures were great, but now we’ve got video. Nothing like a good science inferno.

Researchers Make It Possible To Track Sharks In Real Time

Summer is coming to a quick close as Labor Day weekend is nearly upon us, which means you soon won’t be able to head down to your local beach, lake or pool and take a quick dip as it’ll the temperatures will start to dip very soon. Although if you live in the southern part of the U.S., you can completely disregard that last sentence as it’s pretty much party time for you any time of the year. Which is exactly why you need this real-time shark tracker more than any of us. (more…)

Mailbox intros expanded search, signature and Chrome browser option

It might not be the desktop app you’ve been waiting for, but this newest Mailbox is still pretty notable for its new mobile features. Perhaps the most important addition is the ability to search for emails not saved locally on your iPhone or iPad. It’s far from perfect — we’re unable to dig for old conversations dating more than a few months back — but it’s better than not having it at all. Once you’ve updated the app, you’ll also notice new sections in the Settings page, including a signature box for each linked account and the ability to change the default browser from Safari to Chrome. There’s also an option to link your account to Dropbox, which acquired Mailbox in March, in exchange for 1GB of free space on the cloud service. Unfortunately, there’s no news on the Android app or the reported integration with other email services — but we’ll keep a weather eye on the horizon.

GameStick Expected To Ship Out In September

GameStick Expected To Ship Out In September

The Ouya launched at retail this past June and the Android-powered console immediately sold out at both Amazon and GameStop. While the world was going nuts over the Ouya, a smaller Android-powered console, called GameStick, was announced to give those who are looking for their Android-gaming fix while on the go the ability to do so. GameStick recently went through a number of delays, but it’s now expected to start shipping in September. (more…)

INRIX 5.0 Traffic & Routing App

INRIX 5.0 Traffic & Routing AppA new version of INRIX, a road traffic avoidance app, has made its way to the app store and brings new features: first of all, the app now shows “traffic news”, which are details about what’s going on along your path to a destination. The idea is to provide important details like the nature of the congestion (accident, road work…), which would allow you to choose to either stick with the current route, or take an alternate one. The Ring Clock is a Watch for Your Finger

Pledge to this campaign on Indiegogo if you want to wear a watch on your fingers. It’s called the Ring Clock, and uses 144 ultra-thin mono-color LEDs to display the time when you twist it. It’s a ring. It’s a watch. And, thankfully it doesn’t look like these.
    ringclock
Charging the Ring Clock is wireless, through induction. You just put it on a Qi charging plate. The battery is good for one week of operation on a charge. It’s made from surgical stainless steel and also has a water-resistant exterior.

Right now they’re still working on their prototype. It isn’t finished yet. So you should be aware that this isn’t a sure thing. They may be able to pull it off. Then again, maybe not. In order to put the Ring Clock into production, the company is looking for $287,400 in crowdsourced funding. As of this writing it has raised over $50,000 toward that goal, and still has about 43 days to go.

It takes a minimum $185(USD) pledge if you want one. I hope they get the rest of their funding and manage to complete the project.

Skydog’s Home Networking Command And Control Router And Platform Ships To Backers, On Sale In October

    skydog-closeup

The Skydog home network solution Kickstarter project we covered back in April, created by Xerox PARC spin-out company PowerCloud Systems, is shipping today to its over 1,000 backers on schedule, proving that not every Kickstarter project will be delayed and ultimately disappointing. In case you missed it the first time around, Skydog is a control freak’s dream device when it comes to home Wi-Fi networks.

Skydog allows parents to see exactly where their kids are browsing, and to limit and block access to specific sites, or even cut down net time altogether. It’s the same sort of service enterprises can and often do choose to run on their corporate networks, especially in data-sensitive environments. PowerCloud Systems has experience building those kinds of solutions, and saw an opportunity to bring the same level of control to the consumer sphere, via a combination of easy-to-setup hardware, and an easy to use cloud-based dashboard.

After delivering on its pre-orders, Skydog is looking to offer up its devices for general retail availability starting in October. People can pre-order from their official site now, with packages starting at $149 for a package that includes a dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi router, as well as the mobile app and a 3-year subscription to Skydog’s cloud service, which allows access to home network control and reports from anywhere via the web.

A recent Kickstarter project, the Circle, aims to accomplish much the same thing as Skydog, but with an accessory that works with your existing router and without the subscription model. It’s very promising, but Skydog has shipped in time with their projections and has a proven record of being able to build this kind of solution, as well as satisfied beta testers, while Circle has very pleasing mobile app screens. Of the two, if you’re looking for way to clamp down on out-of-control Internet usage at home, Skydog and its October retail availability seems the surer bet.

Comfort Cast Helps You Update Doctors, Facebook While Your Bones Heal

Comfort Cast Helps You Update Doctors, Facebook While Your Bones Heal

Last month, we caught wind of a 3d-printed cast that is able to give your wounded area, such as your arm, some much needed ventilation as it helps heal your busted bones, and is also recyclable. We thought the concept was pretty neat, but the concept of the Comfort Cast makes us want to go play in traffic in hopes we’ll limp off with a broken bone or seven. (more…)

PlayJam GameStick releases worldwide September 30th

DNP Playjam GameStick releases worldwide September 30th, passes FCC cert

After a series of delays, it looks like PlayJam’s GameStick is making its way to market relatively soon. Whether your allegiance lies with Amazon or GameStop, come September 30th both will begin shipping the tiny console, as noticed by Liliputing. What’s more, PlayJam itself promises that the last of its crowdfunded unit-allotment will ship directly to backers by mid-September. The news doesn’t stop there, as it recently passed FCC certification too. Uncle Sam’s documents — RF exposure statements! Label placement! — don’t contain much we didn’t already know, but if you want to see the GameStick’s user manual, here you go.

    [Thanks, Dave]
