Fo̱s Wearable LED Display Targets Athletes As Target Market

Fo̱s Wearable LED Display Targets Athletes As Target MarketNow here is another piece of wearable technology, but it has nothing to do with the likes of Google Glass. Rather, the Fos is a new kind of wearable LED display that was designed by Anders Nelson, and it will target athletes in particular. Just what does the Fos offer? Well, it will come with a panel that will hold a bright LED grid which can be programmed wirelessly, using your smartphone.

Do not worry about the Fos cramping your style, since it weighs less than a golf ball, and the panel will keep you visible as you sweat it out, while showing off relevant information such as your heart rate and the number of calories burned for others to check out. This custom embedded system will hold a powerful 32-bit microprocessor, flash memory, LED matrix driver and an efficient power supply. Right now, the Fos wearable LED display is a Kickstarter project, where it will come in varying sizes, depending on the amount of money that you decide to drop. Which particular sport or physical activity do you think that the Fos wearable LED display will be able to benefit the athlete the most? Coaches would definitely be able to help out their proteges all the more with relevant information shown off. [Kickstarter Page]

    Sony Xperia Z1 Snapshots Leaked

Sony Xperia Z1 Snapshots LeakedIt seems as though the Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center located in China has given the Sony Xperia Z1 a network license, which would mean it is now free to operate on the country’s mobile networks. Of course, this particular network license approval is not the only thing that the Certification Center released, it also allegedly leaked out a quartet of snapshots of what is most probably the Xperia Z1, where it is shown from the front, back and the customary side shots – both of them. In terms of its design, the Xperia Z1 happens to be nearly identical to the Xperia Z, where you will find a spanking new notification LED located right above the Sony logo to make it different.

On the right side, a SIM card slot will be covered by a protective flap, with Sony’s signature Power/Lock button, volume rocker and dedicated camera shutter key lumped near each other. At the other side lies a microSD memory card slot that is accompanied by a microUSB port, and both of them, too, are protected by flaps. Do you have your eyes set on the upcoming Sony Xperia Z1, or is some other smartphone already hovering under your radar? Perhaps the more affordable Nexus 4 might be your cup of tea instead.

Google+ Hangouts moving to HD video soon, going plugin-free within months

    Google Hangouts Studio Mode

You may not have noticed it yet, but Google is in the middle of sweeping changes to Hangouts that should offer big improvements to image quality and accessibility. The company tells GigaOM that it’s currently upgrading its video chat service to 720p by switching from the H.264 video codec to the more efficient (and Google-controlled) VP8 standard. HD-quality Hangouts should be available soon after Google finishes the VP8 rollout to web users late next week. A sharper picture is just one part of the puzzle, however. The switch to VP8 also sets the stage for WebRTC support, which will let Google offer plugin-free Hangouts in browsers like Chrome and Firefox within the next several months. The search giant will still offer a plugin for holdouts, but they may soon be the exceptions to the rule.

iPad Charger Explodes, Sends Man Flying ‘Across The Room’

iPad Charger Explodes, Sends Man Flying ‘Across The Room’It seems that chargers are growing to be more and more of a fire hazard these days, as the latest incident involves an iPad charger which was said to have exploded the hand of a man, throwing him across the room as he unplugged the device. The man was thankful that it was him who received the electric shock instead of his 8-year old daughter, where he believed that the same shock would have killed her instead. Tim Gillooley, 34, is the victim in this case, and this was his recollection on what happened, “There was a huge bang and it blew me across the room. I was in shock. I was hysterically laughing for about two minutes. It was a bad shock that went down my arm. My mum was panicking and Chloe burst into tears. Nine times out of 10, Chloe would have gone to get it herself. I think it would have killed her.”

The iPad was purchased last November from the Apple store in Liverpool, but it apparently developed charging issues a few months after that. Despite returning the charger to the Apple store, he was told that the charger worked just fine, but deciding against taking any chances, he picked up a new genuine Apple charger complete with the Lightning cable, hoping that the problem would be solved this way – but it continued. Perhaps it is the power outlet that caused the charger to act this way?

An Endangered Animal Sperm Bank Will Let Us Bring Pandas to Space

Whether or not you think that certain endangered animals are worth all the fuss— *cough*pandas*cough*—judging by the internet’s recent, excited tittering over a potential panda pregnancy, the majority of people are very much pro-animal kingdom diversity. So much so, in fact, that a team of Japanese scientists has begun freeze-drying certain endangered animals’ sperm in the hopes of one day bringing them with us to other planets.

Wii U Deluxe Set Price Cut Announced

Wii U Deluxe Set Price Cut AnnouncedNintendo’s current position in the home console market is not exactly an encouraging one, as they have certainly fallen behind Sony and Microsoft in the graphical stakes, where their Wii U has not managed to light up the imagination of the masses in the manner that Nintendo would have wanted. From September 20th onwards, it seems that Nintendo will be rolling out a Deluxe version of the Wii U system that will be accompanied by a price cut by $50, which means that the Wii U Deluxe Set will now cost $299.99 a pop instead of $349.99 previously.

This new price point would make the entry into the next generation gaming console market even easier for the masses, not to mention introducing even greater value to the masses. Not only that, the Wii U is starting to have a stronger lineup of Wii U games that will comprise of Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, EarthBound, New Super Luigi U, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Would this lower price point make it easier for you to take a leap of faith into the next generation gaming scene, or do you still want to wait for the PS4 as well as Xbox One to hit the market before making a decision?

Warrant or No, Cops Can Use Aluminum Foil To Block Smartphone Wiping

Warrant or No, Cops Can Use Aluminum Foil To Block Smartphone Wiping

The legal debate over whether police need a warrant to search a suspect’s cellphone is more than just raging on — it’s headed to the Supreme Court. But even if the nation’s highest court decides a warrant is needed, the authorities could still block you from remote-wiping your phone while they wait for the legal OK to search. And all it takes is the aluminum foil in your kitchen.

    Nintendo 2DS Unveiled

No, the title is not a typo, but rather, here we are with the freshly announced Nintendo 2DS. Yes, you can more or less guess from the name of the device alone that this will be the latest member of the Nintendo 3DS range, although it was specially developed to make portable gaming more accessible to the masses – letting you play Nintendo 3DS games minus the 3D effects, hence the name of the gaming console and a more pocket friendly price point of $129.99 a pop. Available in red or blue from October 12th onwards, it remains to be seen whether the Nintendo 2DS is going to be a hit or not.

You will also be able to enjoy the entire back catalogue of Nintendo DS games as well, which would mean you have at least a few thousand titles to get you started right out of the box. The Nintendo 2DS will arrive in a distinctive fixed, slate-type form factor that looks more bulky than sleek in my opinion, and there is also the option to pick up carrying cases at $12.99 a pop. Not only that, the Nintendo 2DS will boast of wireless connectivity features including multiplayer online game play, fun Nintendo Video content and great digitally delivered games in the Nintendo eShop. Since there is no 3D graphics supported with the Nintendo 2DS, here’s to a far longer lasting battery life!

Nintendo Reveals The Hideous $130 2DS, Will Cut Wii U Price To $299

    Nintendo 2DS

Nintendo wants to compete with cheap tablets more than ever, but just not the way you think. The company will release a new version of the 3DS — the Nintendo 2DS, which has a tablet-esque form factor. As the name suggests, it is a 2D-only handheld console compatible with 3DS and DS games. At $129.99, the 2DS is $40 cheaper than its sibling. The company also announced a $50 price cut for the Wii U on September 20, ahead of the releases of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While the 3DS is doing well, it’s another story for the Wii U. As of June 30, Nintendo reported 3.61 million sales. As a reminder, in July 2007, seven months after the release of the Wii, the company was selling 1.8 million consoles each month. Now, Nintendo wants to compete on price to stay relevant.

But the console still lacks games. Many third-party publishers, such as Electronic Arts, Activision and Ubisoft, will only release their games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 and the Xbox One $499.

Nintendo probably thought that launching the Wii U a year before its competitor was the right move to get a head start. But it is hard to convince existing Wii owners that the Wii U isn’t just a tiny upgrade with a tablet-like controller. The name of the console itself doesn’t help. It finally is an HD console from Nintendo, but it’s hard to communicate about the number of pixels on a screen.

With the 2DS, Nintendo finally built a gaming tablet. It could have a certain appeal to parents who are hesitating between a cheap Android tablet and a Nintendo handheld console, but the form factor doesn’t seem very practical for gamers, and especially children with tiny hands.

Available on October 12, the 2DS will retain the same features as the 3DS, except its main feature — the 3D display. It has the same stylus, Wi-Fi and comes with a 4GB SD card. While $130 is cheap, 3DS games are still more expensive than iOS or Android games. But you won’t find Mario on your iPad.

As Nintendo suggests in the 2DS promo video, the new console is “a handheld gaming system from Nintendo like you’ve never seen before.” Everyone can agree that Nintendo is right on this one.

An earlier version of this article misstated the price of the 3DS. It is $40 more expensive than the 2DS ($169), not $50.
