Political bias! 58 percent of US House of Reps. have iPhones

Who cares about the fiscal deal? What about the iPhone trade-in?

As you watched the hordes line up to buy the new iPhones — or merely to be photographed standing in line — one question might have been playing on your mind: how many of these people are currently in the House of Representatives?

This has been bothering me since Friday.

The House hasn’t exactly been a hive of action recently, so I can imagine that the politicos had plenty of time, should they be Apple fanpersons.

Now NBC’s David Gregory has revealed what a den of Apple enthusiasm the House of Representatives truly is.

Some 58 percent of the House of Representatives are iPhone owners. This is perhaps the most committed majority existing in modern politics.

Those in love with their Samsung Galaxys will be reeling from this information. They will, however, be convinced that there must be a radical segment of the House that is showing its Android fandom.

This is going to hurt, Androiders.

Your faction only has a 4 percent share of the House. That’s like the couple of wacko congresspeople that no one takes seriously.

It seems, you see, that despite its woes, BlackBerry is the second choice of … [Read more]

MotionX-24/7, activity tracker and sleep monitor for the iPhone

Wearable technology and the Quantified Self movement are pretty trendy nowadays, especially since the launch of the ultra-popular Jawbone UP powered by MotionX technology. Today, Fullpower-MotionX, MotionX-24/7 for the iPhone and iPad, an activity tracker and sleep monitor optimized for the iPhone 5S M7 processor and iOS 7.

Unlike competing trackers such as the Jawbone UP or the Nike+ Fuel Band, 24/7 does not require a wearable device to record similar data, it is all in your iPhone. The application can measure your hearth rate simply when you place your finger on the smartphone camera, it captures the image of the blood flow when lit by the LED flash. The optimization for the M7 (a processor designed for sensors management) allows having the application run in the background without draining the battery.

This is Every Lego Lover’s Dream Wedding

This is Every Lego Lover's Dream Wedding

So, you’re thinking of walking that plank they call marriage? Sorry, that sounds cynical. What I mean is, "Are you ready for a lifetime of marital bliss, where everyday is full of rainbows and sunshine?" There’s no better way to say "I do" than with Lego.

iPhone 5S Fingerprint Security Can Be Easily Broken, Hackers Show

Apple says that the new iPhone 5S’ fingerprint sensor is "a convenient and highly secure way to access your phone." The former is true. The latter, not so much. The fingerprint security can be easily broken. Jealous spouses and industrial spies, rejoice!

    Switched On: Microsoft’s mobile monster

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Microsofts mobile monster

On September 2, Microsoft announced that it would pay $7.2 billion for Nokia’s handset business, including its smartphones and Asha phones aimed at consumers in developing economies. Key personnel from that business, including Nokia’s former CEO Stephen Elop, would be joining Microsoft, and Nokia would now be a company that focused on location technologies (via its Here services) and wireless infrastructure (via NSN, for which it had purchased Siemens’ share).

The move marked the exit of one of the most storied and, for many years, most successful mobile phone companies in history. It also marked Microsoft’s entry into the handset market proper, taking an approach more aligned with Apple’s than Google’s. It’s not only that it’s the first time Microsoft has acquired a licensee, but it’s also that it acquired one that had a dominant share of its licensing business in a device category.

Instapaper creator sets out to build Overcast, a better iOS podcast app

If you’re wondering what Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, has been up to since he sold the read-it-later service to Betaworks, wonder no more. At the XOXO festival in Portland, OR, Arment announced that he’s been working on a new podcasting app for iOS called Overcast. Why? The tl;dr reason is because “podcasts are awesome” (We can’t say we disagree). The long of it, however, is because as a lover of podcasts, Arment was frustrated at the quality of the podcast apps that are out there, stating that Apple has been asleep at the podcast wheel for years and third-party solutions aren’t that much better. So he’s taken matters into his own hands with Overcast. He’s currently about half-way done with the app and hopes to release it later this year. We don’t really know that much more about it, but if Arment’s previous work is any indication, we have high hopes for this one. In the meantime, you can head on over to Overcast.fm to sign up for updates.

A Matching Numerical Keypad For Your Wireless Apple Keyboard

Belkin’s new YouType Bluetooth Wireless Keypad looks a lot like Apple’s Magic Trackpad. But the only folks who might actually find it ‘magical’ are accountants, because Belkin trades gestures and multi-touch input for a set of numerical keys and extra shortcuts for navigating large documents.

Chaos Computer Club says it’s beaten Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint reader (video)

Already feeling secure about using just your fingerprint to unlock the new iPhone 5S? European hacker association Chaos Computer Club claims it can be circumvented with “easy everyday means.” According to CCC hacker “Starbug”, tactics laid out in a how-to from 2004 are all that are required, with just a higher res fake needed to beat the Touch ID reader. The process, requires a 2400 DPI photograph of someone’s fingerprint from a glass surface, which is then laser printed at 1200 DPI and used to create a thin latex sheet that serves as the fake. Simple, right? It’s a bit more labor intensive than the old way (just watching someone input their passcode or pattern) but users may want to consider fingerprint access as a measure intended more for convenience than security.

    [Thanks, Frederic]
