Space Tourist Dennis Tito On Using Bathroom In Space: ‘I Hadn’t Had Toilet Training In 60 Years’

NEW YORK – As microgravity makes even the most mundane tasks tricky, going to the bathroom in space can be a chore. How astronauts take care of that basic human necessity while in orbit has been a point of perennial fascination for the Earth-bound public.

For a moment during a Sept. 4 talk here at the Explorers Club, two of the world’s first space tourists who paid their way to the International Space Station traded stories about their space toilet training, or actually the lack of training.

The Explorers Club was holding an event with former NASA astronaut Owen Garriott and his son, gaming legend Richard Garriott, perhaps best known for creating the Ultima role-playing series. They are the only American father-son team to have both gone to space. [Photos: Space Tourist Richard Garriott, an Astronaut Legacy]

While Owen Garriott flew with NASA aboard U.S. space station Skylab and the space shuttle Columbia, his son became a spaceflyer in his own right in 2008 after using his gaming fortune to buy a multimillion-dollar ticket to the space station aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule.

Adventurer and journalist Jim Clash interviewed the duo in front of a small audience and afterwards gave the night’s first question to another private spaceflyer in the room: American businessman Dennis Tito.

A longtime space enthusiast, Tito made his millions in the world of finance, but was once an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Widely considered the first space tourist, Tito paid the Russians a reported $20 million for his 2001 flight to the space station.

The younger Garriott earlier in the night said he used to look at Tito and think, “That’s the guy that got my seat!” Garriott’s long-held aspirations to go to space — first dashed when he learned his eyesight was below NASA standards — had to be postponed for a few years after his wealth took a hit in the dot-com crash.

Tito stood up to ask his question and paused before saying, “One experience that people always ask me about is, ‘How do you go to the bathroom in space?'”

As the audience laughed, Owen Garriott jumped in to add: “Elementary school children, usually.”

But Tito continued, saying that despite his eight months of training with the Russians, he wasn’t all that prepared to go the bathroom in space.

“I guess the Russians really don’t like to talk about these things — they have funny attitudes,” Tito said. “So I got on board the station and the first thing that happened was Jim Voss, an American astronaut, gave me toilet trailing.”

“Now, I hadn’t had toilet training in 60 years,” Tito added. “So I was wondering, did you get toilet training on the ground?”

Richard Garriott, who trained with the Russians, too, corroborated Tito’s story.

“It is hilarious because every other system — everything except the toilet — you use the exact hardware you will use in space on the ground,” Garriott said.

Garriott said he had a cheat sheet for which switches to turn on for when he needed to use the space commode, the toilet does not work the same way as it does on the ground.

“Gravity’s actually really important for how to separate yourself from your waste and there’s no discussion of that,” Garriott said.

His father chimed in to give a perspective from the U.S. side, and discussed his training with NASA ahead of his 60-day stint in space during the Skylab 3 mission in 1973.

“We did receive proper training,” the elder Garriott said. “For urination it’s a very simple thing … Urination is not a problem. Defecation is what you’re concerned about.”

Garriott said the Skylab astronauts used a simulator toilet mounted over a camera so that they could check their positioning on the ground before using the commode in space. All three Skylab crews out also brought home all of their waste to be examined by scientists, Garriott added, remarking that they never had a single toilet failure while in flight.

“One thing NASA did right,” he quipped.

Free iPhone 5C? Sprint offers $100 discount to rivals’ users

The iPhone 5C carries an unlocked price tag of $549.

(Credit: Josh Lowensohn/CNET)

Apple caught flak for offering its “low-cost” iPhone 5C at nearly the same price as the one it replaces would have cost anyway. Not to mention that the price of the 5C topping $700 unsubsidized in markets like China seriously crimps the device’s appeal in major regions of untapped demand.

But a promotion in Sprint stores takes the idea of a low-cost iPhone 5C and does one better: It makes it no cost.

The carrier, a distant third to Verizon and AT&T by number of subscribers, will be giving up to $100 discounts on any phone, including 16GB iPhone 5Cs on preorder now priced at $0 on its online store, to people who bring their number to Sprint from a rival. “Switch to Sprint, keep your number and save on any phone — only for a limited time, and only from Sprint,” the deal’s language reads. It requires a new two-year contract activation and has restrictions. The offer lasts until October 10 while “supplies last,” and excludes taxes, service charges, and an activation fee.

The deal applies to a wide swath of the phones Sprint sells, but the pricing at $100 and timing right before the arrival of the iPhone 5C are conveniently well matched. The front page of Sprint’s Web site has the i… [Read more]

Thousands Cited For Having Pot On Federal Land

TACOMA, Wash. — Karen Strand didn’t think she’d get in trouble for having a small container of medical marijuana when she went hiking in Olympic National Park this summer.

President Barack Obama, she remembered, had said the federal government had “bigger fish to fry” than people who follow state marijuana laws, and Washington state had just legalized pot.

Lawrence Rothman’s ‘#1 All Time Low’ Video Is The Creepiest Thing You’ll See Today

Lawrence Rothman doesn’t do everything the same way you do things. In the video for his lead single, “Montauk Fling,” Rothman dressed himself as Elizabeth Taylor and seduced himself in a hotel room, and he returns with the haunting visuals for “#1 All Time Low” — premiering exclusively on HuffPost Entertainment.

In the new dystopian video, a battered and bruised Rothman meanders through various scenes of a certain type of hell that make the grislier scenes in “Trainspotting” look like “Smurfs 2.” Blood, dirty bathwater — it’s all there. David Bowie favorite Floria Sigismondi directed the video for the song.

“What I try to do during the 14 to 17 hours that i’m awake, and are participating in this rat race, is aim to experience shit that blows my mind and rattles the mundane cage of cynical normalcy,” Rothman said. “Why? So that when I finally get chewed up and spit out on the other end I can say, ‘Fuck it, that was great, those where the days of my life. This idea is the theme of my music.”

Marshall Monitor Headphones Review: Studio Sound for Your Ears

When listening to music or movies on your computer or mobile device, nothing beats a good pair of headphones. And while the market is flush with inexpensive earbuds, they often make me long for better sound quality. I’m happy to say that the Marshall Monitor headphones deliver on that promise.

marshall monitor headphones 2

I’ve been using the Marshall Monitors for the last few days as the primary method of listening to media on my computer and iPhone, and I have to say I’m extremely impressed with these headphones. The first thing you’ll notice about the Marshall Monitors is how good they look. They offer exceptional build quality, with a refined industrial design that echoes the classic Marshall amp design, but updates it.

Nice design touches include lightweight metal construction of the headband and ear swivels, well-padded faux leather earcups, and a padded-faux-leather headband with well-marked brass “L” and “R” channel indicators on the inside. The headphones fold neatly and can be stored in the included carrying pouch.

Another nice touch is that the cord can be detached, and you can choose whether to plug it into the left or right side of the headphones. As an added bonus, whichever 3.5mm jack you leave open can be used to plug in a second set of headphones if you want to share your music. The cord also includes a microphone and remote if you want to use the headphones for making calls.

But why would you waste a good pair of headphones on making phonecalls? These things really shine when listening to music. For starters, I love the excellent sound isolation with their big earcups. Yes, they do put a little pressure on your ears in order to form a tight seal and reduce ambient sound, but I didn’t find them to be uncomfortable, even after wearing them for several hours at a time.

Once I shut out the outside world, I cranked up some tunes, and really let the Marshall Monitors shine. I found their sound reproduction to be excellent, sounding as good as some studio monitors. Listening to Adele’s Right at Rain, I felt like I was standing on stage alongside her, the Hammond organ whirling directly into my ears. To test if they could rock out, I cranked up AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long to 11, and I could feel the drum kit rattling my spine while Brian Johnson’s vocals scorched my eardrums.

There’s none of the overly boomy bass that many over-the-ear headphones have, but trust me, there’s still a solid low end. It’s just clean and accurate. Highs and mids are clean and distortion-free even at the highest volume levels I could throw at them. Marshall rates the 40mm drivers at a 10Hz to 20KHz frequency response range, with a 99dB sensitivity at 100mV@1KHz.

One unique feature Marshall offers are removable filters which attenuate some of the highest tones in the 8KHz to 20KHz range. These filters reduce some of the shrillness that some people might find unpleasant in the higher end of the audible frequency range. Personally, I preferred the sound without the filters in place, and that’s why Marshall gives you a choice. Removing the filters is as easy as popping off the magnetic earcup pads, pulling the filters out, and replacing the earcups.

Overall, I’m very impressed with the sound, styling, portability and build quality of the Marshall Monitor headphones. I guess I’m not surprised that the company behind some of the best concert-grade amplifiers would be capable of carrying across their expertise to personal audio devices.

If you’d like to grab a pair to make your ears happy, they’re available from Marshall’s website for $200(USD).

Garmin delivers two more GPS running watches – the Garmin Forerunner 620 and Forerunner 220

garmin-forerunner-620Some of us like the feeling of running – it makes us feel extremely light, not to mention that running happens to be great exercise for one to burn all those additional calories that have accumulated around the waist. Having said that, Garmin, a name that is synonymous with GPS navigation devices, has just unveiled a couple of GPS running watches, and they are known as the Garmin Forerunner 620 and Forerunner 220. Both of them are said to be the lightest, thinnest, most advanced offerings for runners from Garmin, making it your very own non-living personal running coach.

Let us take a look at the Forerunner 620 first – it will arrive with a bunch of advanced features including recovery advisor, race predictor and VO2 max estimate that will come in handy in helping runners train smarter and to achieve new race goals. When used in tandem with the NEW HRM-Run monitor, the Forerunner 620 will also be able to deliver the relevant feedback on running form. Assuming you prefer to hit the treadmill instead of pound the pavement, both the 620 and 220 will feature a built-in accelerometer that is capable of tracking distance and pace, meaning you do not need to obtain a separate sensor. Either way, these two models will come with Garmin’s special one-inch Chroma color display.

Not only that, equipped with Bluetooth Smart wireless upload capabilities, the Forerunner 620 and 220 are capable of sending runners’ run data to the Garmin online community known as Garmin Connect, all without requiring one to be tethered to a computer as a compatible smartphone will do the job. Not only that, the Forerunner 620 and 220 are pretty tough, being water-resistant to 50m with rechargeable batteries that are said to last up to six weeks in watch mode and up to 10 hours in training mode. Expect the Forerunner 620 to arrive in blue/black and white/orange color configurations, while the Forerunner 220 will feature black/red and white/violet shades. Depending on whether you are picking up the HRM-Run Bundle or Heart Rate Bundle, they will retail for $399.99/$449.99 and $249.99/$299.99, respectively.

Hong Kong’s Infamous Kowloon Walled City Rebuilt as Amusement Park

Hong Kong's Infamous Kowloon Walled City Rebuilt as Amusement Park

When Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City was razed in the late 1980s, it was an infamously untouchable haven for drugs, crime, and prostitution—a place few locals would dare to visit. Now, a theme park outside of Tokyo is selling tickets to explore a painstakingly modeled replica of the Walled City—right down to its trash, which was imported from Hong Kong.
