Alienware 14 and 17 review: Dell’s new gaming laptops are fast, powerful and well-lit

Alienware 14 and 17 review: Dell's new gaming laptops are fast, powerful and well-lit

Picking a gaming laptop is a difficult task these days: machines can be found in all shapes and sizes, from pricey thin-and-lights to oversized behemoths. That wide selection is a good thing, allowing buyers to pick and choose the best machine from dozens of manufacturers, possibly even finding a deal on a lower-cost ODM system. Still, there needs to be some sort of benchmark buyers can look to, and for many, Alienware serves that purpose. The brand, now owned by Dell, is known for offering powerful, high-quality machines at the market’s going rate; that is, not too cheap, not too expensive, but reasonably priced with just a hint of prestige. Considering Alienware’s 2013 hardware refresh, it seemed about time we took a closer look at Dell’s updated family of gaming portables. We picked out two: the Alienware 14 ($1,199+) and the larger Alienware 17 ($1,499+). Let’s see how they stack up.

Atomium Concept Turns 2D Drawings into 3D Edibles

With few exceptions, 3D printers can’t be used to print edible things, but wouldn’t it be extremely cool if we could one day print whatever food we can imagine using 3D printers?

That’s the idea behind the Atomium. The concept device would be equipped with a 3D-imaging camera and software that could turn 2D drawings or photos into 3D objects. When powered on, users could turn their doodles of burgers into the real thing. Cakes, cookies, pasta, pastries – the sky’s the limit.

The idea is that the device could develop foods based on the individual users tastes and desired shape of food. It would even take into account their individual medical profile. Of course, you can’t make food out of nothing. Ingredients would have to be placed inside individual bins on the Atomium’s base. These are then used to “print” edibles, which can be removed from the device’s head.

The goal is to make the Atomium as simple as possible so that even kids can use it. This is definitely one of those concepts that seem pretty far out as of the moment. But that’s how many current technologies started out, so maybe this will become a reality one day.

O2 delivers ‘Bags That Talk’

bagsthattalkI have learned throughout the years that there are just some things which you do not argue with your other half, and that includes subjects close to her heart. For some ladies, handbags and shoes are to them like how a new set of golf clubs are to guys, but do bear in mind that this is just a general statement and does not hold true for everyone. O2 has an exciting project that they have done with designer Sean Miles, where the latter has added to his collection of vintage fashion accessories that are made from recycled mobile phones. This new series of handbags is aptly called ‘Bags That Talk’.

The whole idea behind this particular Bags That Talk idea is to explore the very real possibilities of gadget recycling. The approach that Bags That Talk has taken would be to combine iconic designer handbags where among them include a vintage Celine box handbag, a Chloe shoulder bag and an Alexander McQueen clutch bag, alongside old and unwanted Nokia and LG handsets which were sent in by O2 Recycle customers who had moved on to newer, brighter and shinier objects.

Does this mean that the men who are fashion conscious are left out of the picture? Not really, as there is also a luxury Mulberry messenger bag which has been given a somewhat similar treatment, having been turned into a retro ghetto blaster-cum-mobile phone. This unique creation is more than ready to begin blasting out the choices on your playlists at the touch of a button, in addition to providing you with the freedom to carry out conversations on the move thanks to the integrated handset and earphone socket.

It would be safe to say that these handsets have been upcycled in a way, and they have definitely gained a new lease of life. No idea if such handbags would be worth more with an integrated handset or not though.

Holy Crap: Watch Volvo Use A Hamster To Steer An Enormous Truck

Volvo’s new trucks are so easy to drive, a hamster could do it! No, really. Volvo Trucks built a makeshift hamster wheel onto the tiller of one of its rigs, and using nothing but the orange-y allure of a carrot, a hamster steered a 15-ton truck all the way up a quarry, with sheer cliffs off each side. Holy crap.

What Type Of Watch Do You Wear?

What Type Of Watch Do You Wear?

There’s been a lot of talk about smart watches lately, but most of us aren’t there yet. I wear the same analog watch every day. It tells time and looks kinda nice. I feel naked if I leave the house without it. Some people are all about digital options, either because they find them easier to read or because they want easily accessible stopwatch/calculator/whatever functions. But watches aren’t for everyone, and it’s easy not to wear one when we all carry phones everywhere. The thing I like about wearing a watch is the ability to easily set it five minutes fast. No matter how many years I run my watch fast, it always gives me a kick in the pants to get moving when I’m going to be late. Maybe I’m gullible, but whatever works, right? Are you analog, digital, smarty pants or bare wrist? Are you planning to switch anytime soon? Give us the time of day below.

Wearable Mosquito Nets Look Silly, But They’ll Keep the Bugs Away

Did you know that mosquitoes inject an anesthetic into your skin, so you won’t feel a thing when they finally take that bite? When that wears off, the itching and wave upon wave of annoyance begins. That aside, mosquitoes are carriers of a multitude of diseases, too.

If you’re not a huge fan of bug sprays and insect repellent lotions, then you might consider wearing a mosquito net instead.

It may look silly, but this might just be the answer to your insect and bug bite woes. You can wear this mosquito net over your clothes, and it’s extremely breathable, so you don’t have to worry about feeling all stuffy during the summer. The 1.2-mm netting looks fine, but rest assured they’ll still allow the breeze to pass through while block off mosquitoes, insects, and other bugs. If you’re wearing shorts, you also might want to invest in a pair of mosquito net pants to round out your outfit.

The Wearable Mosquito Net goes for $34.95(USD) while the Mosquito net Pants sell for $29.95 over at Hammacher Schlemmer for $29.95(USD).

Pebble’s Eric Migicovsky Is Uninterested In A Potential Acquisition

When it comes to competition, Pebble has plenty to be concerned about. In an interview onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013, founder Eric Migicovsky seemed unconcerned about questions on competition from Apple and Samsung, claiming that Motorola and Sony have offered smartwatch products for quite some time.

However, speaking backstage, Migicovsky went a bit more in-depth with the latest products from Samsung and the idea of a forthcoming Apple iWatch, stating that Pebble would be pretty uninterested in the idea of an acquisition by the competition, should it be offered.

“In the Samsung Galaxy Gear presentation on stage, Samsung was really heavy on features for the watch but skirted how people actually use it every day,” said Migicovsky. “I use my watch on a daily basis, looking at upcoming weather forecast, with an app for Evernote, and an app on the phone to customize the watch with drag-and-drop functions that auto syncs to the watch.”

According to Migicovsky, Pebble is fortunate to have been working on wearable computing for years in the background, constantly iterating, as wearables heat up in general.

“We’re in a great position because we get to figure out what works first,” said Migicovsky.

That said, Migicovsky didn’t seem interested in the idea of an acquisition. For the record, Migicovsky claims that Pebble has never had an acquisition offer by Samsung or Apple or anyone else for that matter, but hypothetically speaking, it’s not something that piques his interest.

“We’re staying laser focused on the task of creating a platform that people can build on top of to communicate with wearables, and we won’t do anything that causes a distraction from that goal.”

But that doesn’t mean that there’s no new hardware in the pipeline. For now, Pebble is working on building the ecosystem around the product, like the companies building special bands or the developers building apps. Eventually, though, Migicovsky hinted that Pebble is looking at the other materials people wear on their wrists, perhaps hinting at a luxury model down the road.

After all, the Pebble is a sports watch.

Rita Ora’s New Tattoo Is Of A Topless Woman Named Rosetta

Rita Ora added another tattoo to her collection last week.

The singer and her model friend, Cara Delevingne, stopped by celebrity tattoo artist Bang Bang McCurdy’s studio to get inked Wednesday night. While Delevingne got a tattoo of her mother’s name, Ora got a giant illustration of a topless woman on her rib cage.

McCurdy told E! News that Ora’s ink is “the most detailed tattoo” he’s ever done on a celebrity, adding that it’s a “realistic version of a Vargas painting of a pinup girl.”
