Internet Cat Video Festival Held At UK City Of Culture

Internet Cat Video Festival Held At UK City Of CultureWhat is it with the Internet and cat videos or animated GIFs? It does seem as though the phenomenon of Internet cat videos has achieved new heights, with a festival of its own being held in the UK City of Culture. It will be a celebration of felines being cute, clumsy, or absolutely hilarious, and will also happen to be part of CultureTECH, which is actually week-long celebration that highlights the wonders of digital technology, media and music. In the Internet Cat Video Festival, revelers will be able to enjoy a programme of Internet clips that were submitted by fans prior. According to event organizer Scott Stulen, he said that “It’s about embracing the phenomenon.” while adding that Internet cat videos happen to be playing the role of “all of the things compelling art should. They raise questions, challenge assumptions, anger people and create emotional connections.”

It could very well also be a social experiment as what used to be a solitary online viewing experience has been transformed into a real world social event. Among the videos that will be shown include Maru the cat who jumps in and out of boxes, while Fatso the cat plays the keyboard, and of course, the infamous Nyan cat singing with a trail of rainbow right behind. Are you one of those who absolutely love all cat videos?

Dell board votes in favor Michael Dell's $249 billion buyout offer

Dell has finally agreed to let founder Michael Dell take the company private through a partnership with investment firm Silver Lake Partners, in a deal valued $24.9 billion. The transaction, which is still pending regulatory approval, should see stockholders receiving $13.88 per share of common stock (including payment of a special cash dividend) and is expected to close in Q3 of Dell’s 2014 fiscal year. In a statement released to the press, Michael Dell said that the newly private company’s mission will be to “serve our customers with a single-minded purpose and drive the innovations that will help them achieve their goals.”

Update: On the company’s investor call, Michael Dell, who retains 75 percent ownership under this new structure, reaffirmed Dell’s commitment to innovation and customer service — goals he said can now be better achieved “without the scrutiny of operating as a public company.” He also outlined several key areas of focus for the newly private Dell, among which expanding its presence in emerging markets, investing in R&D and acquisitions for enterprise solutions, as well as the PC, tablet and virtual computing space are key pillars.

Galapagos Islands Get The Google Panorama Touch

Man, time sure passes by quickly when you are not keeping track of it. This week so happens to be the 178th anniversary of Darwin’s discovery of the Galapagos Islands. Google has partnered with the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park and Charles Darwin Foundation, and having said that, their partnership has borne fruit through the launch of 360-degree images from the Galapagos Islands which were collected in May using the Street View Trekker. No longer do you have to fork out your life savings to make your way there, now you are able to pay a visit to the Galapagos Islands from the comfort of your home, lazing around on your beanbag with a decent Internet connection in tow.

This is one armchair viewing experience that is special, and hopefully Google’s partnership will also see them play an instrumental role in the ongoing research of the environment, conservation, animal migration patterns and the impact of tourism on the islands. Do bear in mind that such imagery captured is not just meant for you to wow and drool over it, but rather, it will also be used for scientific research. Which particular life form on the Galapagos Islands are the ones that have caught your attention the most? [Press Release]

Lifeinvader Is Rockstar’s Social Network Parody

Lifeinvader Is Rockstars Social Network ParodyWho would have thought that the idea of a social network would have taken off in such a big way? Well, a few people did, and Facebook has emerged as the 800 lbs gorilla in this particular market. It does seem that Facebook might have a challenger to its throne though, although this would be in the virtual world of Grand Theft Auto 5, or GTA 5 for short. Rockstar has decided to come up with a social network parody that they have called Lifeinvader, and it has been launched before GTA 5′s arrival later next week. Lifeinvader will most probably also feature a bunch of characters and brands from GTA 5 itself.

It is said that the Lifeinvader social network will load up a range of profiles when accessed, where among them include Sprunk, hairdresser Herr Kutz Barber, and Redwood Cigarettes, with the latter actually having a promotion that offers a 10% discount for your first visit to a hospital whenever you “stalk” them on Lifeinvader. I guess this is a continuation from where GTA 4 left off, as that game had a slew of parody websites. Lifeinvader even has its fair share of taglines, among them being “Portray the life you want online,” “Make friends with strangers,” and “Making the private public”.

People want off of this planet, which is why we weren’t so surprised to hear over 100,000 people signed up for the Mars One project last month. It turns out that total doubled as over 200,000 applications were received by the Netherlands-based private spaceflight project Mars One, and for the next several months, they’ll be narrowing down the applicants. Media Shield Law Compromise Considered In Senate

NEW YORK -– The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to reach a compromise Thursday over the definition of a journalist, a stumbling block in the latest attempt to pass a federal media shield law that would offer more protections for journalists compelled to reveal a confidential source or information.

McClatchy reported last month that senators sparred over who would be covered under such a law. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) argued that a covered person should be a salaried employee, independent contractor or “agent of an entity that disseminates news or information” at the time in question. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), one of the sponsors of the bill under consideration, countered that bloggers and others providing news and information today, especially online, may not necessarily receive a salary and yet still deserve protection.
