Top Nike Design Director Apple Hired Didnt Reportedly Work On Fuelband

Yesterday it was reported that Apple has hired top Nike design director Ben Shaffer to work on wearable devices. Shaffer was the Studio Director at Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, it was said that his work at the company included Nike’s Flyknit shoes and its Fuelband fitness tracker. A new report by Fast Company states that while Shaffer was indeed the studio director at the Innovation Kitchen, he never worked on the Fuelbands. According to the report, Shaffer’s work at Nike was related to “footwear innovation.”

Apparently the Innovation Kitchen is littered with knitting machines and shoe prototypes, but its not where work on the Fuelband is done. The report claims that Fuelband’s development was lead by the Digital Sport group at Nike, which is said to be in a totally different building than the Innovation Kitchen. This certainly contradicts the earlier report which implied that Shaffer had been poached from Nike due to his experience with wearable devices, particularly those that are fitness focused. The iWatch itself is said to be fitness focused, so it seemed logical for Apple to bring someone in who had worked on a similar device before. No confirmation of Shaffer’s appointment at Apple has been made as yet.

BlackBerry Beings Direct Online Sales Of Z10 And Q10

BlackBerry Beings Direct Online Sales Of Z10 And Q10

BlackBerry recently announced that it has sold 3.7 million smartphones in the second fiscal quarter of 2013, majority of these devices were running legacy OS. What this means is that the company’s BB10 powered devices haven’t had a strong quarter, despite the fact that they were the ones supposed to turn things around for BlackBerry. The company needs to sell more units and now it has started to directly sell the GSM unlocked models of BlackBerry Z10 and the Q10 through its website. At this point in time, the units are only directly being sold and shipped to U.S. addresses.

An unlocked GSM BlackBerry Z10 can be purchased directly from the company for $449, whereas the Q10 is accompanied by a price tag of $549. As previously mentioned, these are unlocked versions and will be compatible with GSM networks in the U.S. as well as in other countries around the globe. BlackBerry has made a return to direct sales after quite some time. In the past one could purchase a number of GSM BlackBerry devices through the company’s website. It remains to be seen if this additional sales channel will help the company, though it won’t be enough on its own to fix all of the problems the company is facing.

NYT: NSA monitors, graphs some US Citizens’ social activity with collected metadata

Just how does the NSA piece together all that metadata it collects? Thanks to “newly disclosed documents and interviews with officials,” The New York Times today shed light on how the agency plots out the social activity and connections of those it’s spying on. Up until 2010, the NSA only traced and analyzed the metadata of emails and phone calls from foreigners, so anything from US citizens in the chains created stopgaps. Snowden-provided documents note the policy shifted later in that year to allow for the inclusion of Americans’ metadata in such analysis. An NSA representative explained to the NYT that, “all data queries must include a foreign intelligence justification, period.”

During “large-scale graph analysis,” collected metadata is cross-referenced with commercial, public and “enrichment data” (some examples included GPS locations, social media accounts and banking info) to create a contact chain tied to any foreigner under review and scope out its activity. The highlighted ingestion tool in this instance goes by the name Mainway. The NYT article also highlights a secret report, dubbed “Better Person Centric Analysis,” which details how data is sorted into 164 searchable “relationship types” and 94 “entity types” (email and IP addresses, along with phone numbers). Other documents highlight that during 2011 the NSA took in over 700 million phone records daily on its own, along with an “unnamed American service provider” that began funneling in an additional 1.1 billion cellphone records that August. In addition to that, Snowden’s leak of the NSA’s classified 2013 budget cites it as hoping to capture “20 billion ‘record events’ daily” that would be available for review by the agency’s analysts in an hour’s time. As you might expect, the number of US citizens that’ve had their info bunched up into all of this currently remains a secret — national security, of course. Extended details are available at the source links.

AT&T And Apple Resolve Lawsuit On Original iPad Unlimited Data Claims

AT&T And Apple Resolve Lawsuit On Original iPad Unlimited Data Claims

Both AT&T and Apple were sued back in 2010 over their claims of offering unlimited data for the original iPad, which came out that year. The lawsuit was brought when the unlimited data claims of the original iPad were later withdrawn by the carrier. Frustrated customers then sued both companies claiming that the bait-and-switch tactic was applied, and nearly three years later, a favorable outcome has appeared for them. U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte of San Jose, California has approved a plan under which Apple will pay $40 to those U.S. based customers who bought or ordered an original iPad 3G before June 7th, 2010.

Customers who purchased an iPad 3G but did not get a mobile plan will receive a $20 per month discount on the current 5GB monthly data plan of AT&T. That said, don’t expect your cheque in the mail anytime soon if you’re one of those customers. This deal will receive final approval in February 2014 after which Apple will start sending out the money. It will attempt to contact everyone who is eligible for the payout and will send a cheque worth $40. Those AT&T customers who no longer own their original iPad will be eligible for the $20 per month discount as well.

Owners of the new Lego version of the Maersk Line Triple-E might be tempted to smash a bottle of champagne against it once they’re done building, given that it’s a model of the world’s largest ship.

Alas, the model would probably smash to bits. Still, maritime and Lego fans alike may want to rush out in January to buy the new $150 set. Comprised of 1,518 bricks, the Lego Maersk Triple-E re-creates the real ship with what the toy company said is a high attention to detail.

AOKP Android 4.3 Nightly Builds For Nexus 7 2013 And Oppo Find 5 Released

If you follow original Android development closely, you’ll be aware of the fact that there hasn’t been much news coming in about AOKP. The team finally broke its silence today and announced that they’ve been doing a lot of “heavy lifting” in the background to create the “smoothest nightly builds you’ll ever flash.” These are based on Android 4.3, the latest update to Google’s mobile platform which was released last month. At this point in time, AOKP Android 4.3 nightly builds are only available for two devices, the Nexus 7 2013 and the Oppo Find 5.

Earlier today a member of the AOKP team announced that AOKP ROMs now have more than 3.5 million users around the world, which is quite a significant achievement. Custom Android ROMs developed by this team are right up there with CyanogenMod ROMs, which are also some of the most popular custom Android ROMs being used by enthusiasts all around the globe. AOKP Android 4.3 nightly builds for other devices will come later. Since there are nightly builds nonetheless, it is likely that there will be a few issues that haven’t been taken care of. If you do install the ROM on any of the two supported devices, expect to encounter a few bugs, which you can report to the AOKP team for squashing.

Android Tablets Giving The iPad A Run For Its Money [Research]

Android Tablets Giving The iPad A Run For Its Money [Research]

Apple’s iPad has long dominated the tablet market. It is by far one of the most insanely popular tablets available in the market, demand for Apple’s slate has skyrocketed since 2010 when the original iPad came out. However, according to ABI Research, Android tablets are now giving the iPad a run for its money. The research firm believes that iPad has now “passed the baton” to the Android ecosystem and they provide numbers to back this statement up. The firm’s research indicates that in the second quarter of 2013, the iPad was outsold by Android tablets with 30.5 million units being sold as opposed to Apple’s 14.5 million. In Q2, tablet sales generated $12.7 billion in revenue, the iPad look slightly less than 50 percent. Notwithstanding the nominal market share of Windows RT and Windows Pro tablets, it appears that Android tablets are now raking in a significant chunk of the revenues as well.

Regardless of the gains made by Android tablets, the manufacturers still haven’t been able to beat the iPad brand. These numbers represent Android tablets manufactured by a plethora of companies against the iPad, which belongs to just one company, Apple. The closest someone has come to Apple in this regard is Samsung, which sold nearly 8.1 million Android tablets alone in the second fiscal quarter of 2013.

The FTC wants your thoughts on proposed patent troll investigation

The FTC wants your thoughts on its proposed patent troll investigation

Here’s a question. Forced to decide, would you rather have a patent troll breathing down your neck, or cuddle up with an entity just as ghoulish that’s living under a bridge? The FTC wants your thoughts on the matter, even if its description isn’t quite so… colorful. The agency is putting out a call for public commentary on its proposed investigation of patent assertion entities, which have come under federal scrutiny as of late. Key to the proposal, the FTC would request information from 25 patent trolls to learn non-public information such as their corporate structure, patent holdings, means of acquiring patents, the cost of enforcing them and the earnings that the trolls generate. Accordingly, the agency hopes to “develop a better understanding of how they impact innovation and competition.”

For comparison sake, the FTC also proposes an information request from approximately 15 companies in the wireless communication sector, which would include manufacturers and other licensing entities. You’re more than welcome to answer the bridge question in the comments, but if you want to contact the FTC directly, you’ll find everything you need after the break.
