NASA’s Curiosity Rover Discovers Mars’ Soil Is 2% Water

NASAs Curiosity Rover Discovers Mars Soil Is 2% Water

NASA’s Curiosity rover has been having quite the time on Mars over the past year. Just last September, Curiosity found evidence of water on the red planet, and this summer, traces of “drinkable water” was found on Mars. Considering how important water is for life on Earth to survive, these were pretty big discoveries, but Curiosity’s recent discovery trumps them in comparison. Thirsty Bird Water Dispenser increases your cuteness factor

thirsty-bird-dispenserHow many of you out there actually keep a birdhouse so that you can invite some of your feathered friends over to make music for you in the mornings? There is nothing quite like the uplifting songs of birds in the early morning as dawn breaks, and apart from that, you will also find their antics in a birdbath rather funny and adorable. Well, since birds bring such joy to you, you might as well do the same to others at home or at the office, although this time around, there is nothing organic about the $36.99 Thirsty Bird Water Dispenser.

Rather, the Thirsty Bird Water Dispenser is a constant reminder for us to make sure that our bodies are well hydrated, getting the minimum 8 glasses of water each day. Not only that, it also informs you on how much water you have actually consumed, so that you will be on track to be a healthy office drone. The easy to build design would enable you to attach your personal sized water bottle to the base. It will come with a cap adapter just in case your bottle size happens to be different. All you need to do when thirst strikes is to pull the cute little green bird, and water will quickly dispense into the waiting cup.

This Pizza Has a Crunchy, Ramen-tastic Crust

Pizza with pasta toppings. Pizza infused with lasagna in the middle. Pizza with burgers baked into the crust. Those are just some of the interesting pizza creations people all over the world have come up with.

Another one to add to the list is the Ramen Crust Pizza.

    ramen pizzamagnify

As its name suggests, this delicious pie was made with a crispy ramen crust. That’s right, you won’t find any dough here. The pizza was thought up by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt. The recipe is surprisingly simple and easy to follow: cook instant noodles, simmer the cooked noodles in hot olive oil, add toppings, and bake. Sounds delicious.

You can find the recipe here, in case you’re interested in making your own Ramen Pizza for dinner. Or if you’d rather not go through the trouble, it’s only a matter of time before Pizza Hut starts making these, I’m sure.

Virgin Mobile teases iPhone 5s and 5c as ‘coming soon,’ prepaid pricing TBA

Virgin Mobile teases iPhone 5s and 5c as 'coming soon,' prepaid pricing TBA

Just a few short months after Virgin Mobile’s Sprint-fueled US arm listed the iPhone 5 for sale, the MVNO is teasing the smartphone’s successors as “coming soon.” According to the firm’s homepage, both the iPhone 5s and 5c will debut for prepaid customers, though pricing and availability remain unknown. Judging by the previous-gen’s starting price of $550, however, you might want to start saving up now. The iPhone 4S, meanwhile, remains on the ticket. That handset is currently listed for 15 percent off its $450 sticker price, available today for $382.49.

Apple photo patent declared invalid as it had already been shown… by Apple

Apple photo patent declared invalid as it had already been shown... by Apple

It’s not often that events of a patent tiff transcend the humdrum noise we’re all too used to, but the most recent judgement of a Munich court has declared an Apple patent invalid based on prior art from, well, Apple. As Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents explains, Cupertino has racked up a couple of decisions going against both Samsung and Motorola based on a patent for “portable electronic device[s] for photo management,” which describes a bounce-back aka rubber-banding effect specifically within the iOS photo gallery app. Now, Apple’s lawmen successfully argued the UI feature was different from previous concepts presented by AOL and Microsoft (which could benefit Cook & Co greatly in other cases, Mueller says). However, there was one piece of prior art they couldn’t dispute: the feature in question being shown off by Steve Jobs at the OG iPhone keynote back in January 2007. (We’ve embedded video of the keynote below, but you’ll need to jump to 32:40 to catch the gallery bounce-back bit.)

You see, even though the rubber-banding feature was demonstrated by Apple, on an Apple device, it still counts as prior art that invalidates its own patent — in Europe at least. That’s because documents describing the feature weren’t filed until June 2007, almost six months after Jobs took to the stage. A similar, first-to-file situation is now part of the US system, of course, ever since the America Invents Act was signed into law in 2011. As the first-generation iPhone keynote came years before that, however, it’s unlikely to hold any weight in future US court decisions. Well, you can’t win ’em all Apple, especially when you’re up against yourself.

FAA Advisory Panel Approves The Use Of Personal Electronics On Planes

FAA Advisory Panel Approves The Use Of Personal Electronics On Planes

Earlier this summer, it was reported the FAA was planning to relax the personal electronics restrictions they had put into place for several years now, making it nearly impossible to listen to a portable music player or reading an ebook during takeoff or landing. It looks like the ball is starting to roll as the FAA advisory committee has just recommended that airline passengers should be allowed to use “smartphones, tablets, e-readers and other personal electronic devices” during takeoffs and landings. A Visual Comparison of Sci-Fi Spaceships

No, this is not an intergalactic traffic jam, although those look just like what you see here, just with a lot of honking and space rage. This is a size comparison chart of every Sci-Fi ship ever. Ok, maybe not every spaceship, but it does cover just about every ship anybody cared about.

It was compiled by DeviantARTist Dirk Loechel. It must have taken him a long time, not to mention lots of research in a galaxy far far away. Let us know if you think he missed some. My eyes are just way too stunned looking at them all in one place.

Looking at this massive fleet, you can’t help but feel like Doctor Who that one time when every alien from anywhere showed up in the skies above to arrest him. That’s a frak-load of ships!
