Apple Reportedly Blocking Employee Vacations Due To Imminent iPhone And iOS 7 Launch

Rumor has it that Apple is blocking support personnel vacations from September 15th to September 28th. During this time, Apple is expected to release the next generation iPhone, possibly the new budget iPhone as well. Apart from launching the new smartphones, the company is also going to publicly roll out iOS 7 to the public. AppleInsider has reportedly received an internal company document which shows that Apple has blocked vacation time for AppleCare employees in the aforementioned dates, the document is said to have been accessed through a virtual private network from an Apple domain that’s exclusive to internal employees only.

Three of the major U.S. carriers have also reportedly blocked employee vacations in the second half of September, the carriers include T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. All of these signs point to an imminent iPhone launch. Apple is rumored to unveil two new iPhones on September 10th. It is expected that the new smartphones will be launched across all major U.S. carriers, there are four – add Sprint to the previous list, at the same time. The launch itself has been rumored to take place on September 20th, though it should be kept in mind that the company hasn’t confirmed anything as yet. Girl Dressed as Doctor Who Takes on Giant Balloon Cthulhu

The headline pretty much says it all.

All I can say is thank God she’s got more than a sonic screwdriver.

Nike LeBron 11 Shoes: Lighter Than Ever

The latest Nike LeBron James branded footwear has been unveiled, and it’s looking like it will be a very lightweight shoe. Previous models were a bit bulkier, which was both good and bad.

nike lebron james 11 basketball shoe sneaker

I got hooked on the LeBron James 10 simply because of the comfort of the shoe for casual wear. This came from the AirMax 360 airbag that was very prominent at the bottom of the shoe. This feature, or something close to it has been present on LeBron James shoes for a few years. Not anymore. The LBJ 11 no longer has a visible AirMax 360 airbag. Instead, it emphasizes light weight. A size nine shoe weighs just 14.5 oz.

nike lebron james 11 basketball shoe sneaker side

The upper features Hyperposite technology for lock-down, a Hyperfuse construction and Dynamic Flywire tech to keep it all cinched down. The cushion comes from a full-length Lunarlon sole with a Nike Zoom unit – a first for LBJ shoes. So what does that all mean? They’re just fancy brand names for a lightweight, durable and flexible shoe.

The Nike LeBron James 11 will be launched this October for about $200(USD).

There May Not Actually Be A Shortage Of STEM Workers At All

There May Not Actually Be A Shortage Of STEM Workers At All

It’s pretty common knowledge that the U.S. isn’t producing enough mathematicians, scientists and engineers to support demand in "STEM" fields. And reports come and go that other countries are facing similar shortages. But like all things that are definitely true, it’s actually pretty complicated to prove that the trend really exists. Robert N. Charette of IEEE Spectrum got suspicious and began combing data from the last six decades. His conclusion is that we actually have plenty of STEM workers, and the hype about a shortage may be doing more harm than good.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: birth simulator, wave-powered desalination and carbon dioxide bricks

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

    Image

As if the Hyperloop and Tesla weren’t enough to keep him busy, real-life Tony Stark Elon Musk revealed this week that he felt the futuristic hologram UI from Iron Man could be built and that he might just be the one to do it. Over in Denmark, Inhabitat was on the scene covering the 2013 INDEX: Awards honoring groundbreaking inventions that make life better. Get the scoop on all of the winners — from a life-saving smart highway that wirelessly charges cars to a birth simulator that could save millions of babies a year to Copenhagen’s comprehensive Climate Adaption Plan to reduce flooding.

But Copenhagen wasn’t the only city that had rising tides on the mind as the world reflected on the eight-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. While catastrophic flooding may have seemed like an isolated incident at that time, the threat of future storms is now matter-of-fact and ideas on how to protect against them, like this dam that uses the power of floodwater itself to inflate, have been popping up left and right.

Wipe Your Rear Windshield with a Cat’s Tail

Normally I silently wish a moving violation on anyone I see cruising the streets of my town with stickers of any sort on their car. I harbor particular ill will for anyone with stick-figure families adorning their vehicle. However, I have found an interesting sticker that I wouldn’t mind seeing on someone’s car over at ThinkGeek.

    grumpy cat1

The sticker is officially called the Moving Tail Kitty Car Decal. The name does a very nice job of describing exactly what the sticker is all about. You actually get two cat sticker bodies with one smiling and another that looks rather like Grumpy Cat.

You place the body of the kitty around the rear windshield wiper of your vehicle. You then take another sticker that matches the kitty and apply it to the windshield wiper itself. The idea is when the windshield wiper is running it looks like the kitty is wagging its tail.

Like a cat would ever be caught performing such a menial task.

You can pick the sticker kit up at ThinkGeek for $12.99 (USD).

Store Files on iPhone with App… Free for 2-weeks Only

This article was written on September 10, 2008 by CyberNet.

air sharing.jpgOne thing that really sucks with the iPhone and iPod Touch is that neither of them can be used to store files. When you have that much storage space available to you, being able to store files would be really nice. There are a handful of programs in the App Store you can use to store some types of files on your iPhone, but the only downside is that most of these apps are $5 and above.

Luckily for you Avatron is offering their new Air Sharing app (iTunes link) for free for the first two weeks (release date was September 8th, 2008). With it you can wirelessly transfer these various types of files from a Windows, Mac, or Linux machine. Here’s a quick list of the different file formats that Air Sharing supports:

    • iWork (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), full resolution if saved with preview
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), with limited support for XML formats
    • Web Archive (web-page downloads packaged by Safari)
    • Web page
    • PDF
    • HTML
    • RTF (Rich Text Format)
    • RTFD (TextEdit documents with embedded images)
    • Plain text (many different file extensions), with Unicode support
    • Source code (C/C++, Objective C/C++, C#, Java, Javascript, XML, shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python, and more), with color-coded formatting
    • Movie (standard iPhone formats: H.264, MPEG-4, 3GPP, etc.)
    • Audio (standard iPhone formats: MP3 VBR, AAC, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, CAF, etc.)
    • Image (standard iPhone formats: GIF, PNG, JPG, TIFF, etc.)

It’s a little disappointing that these programs can’t support other types of files, but on the plus side you can preview all of those documents right on your iPhone. The syntax-highlighting for code files is particularly cool.

Make sure you grab Air Sharing from the iTunes Store while it’s free. After the first two weeks it will be $6.99. Man, I wish more of the paid apps did this. 😉

Cramming Into A Tiny House May Not Be So Bad

Cramming Into A Tiny House May Not Be So Bad

Between crippling recessions and human environmental impact things have gotten complicated, and frankly kind of negative. That may be why the small house movement is so appealing. Downsizing everything means less stuff to buy and maintain. Minimize harm and maximize good vibes.

vrAse Smartphone-powered VR Headset: Virtual Reality, Actual Savings

A few months ago we found out about the Durovis Dive, a virtual reality gaming headset for Android smartphones. A similar device called vrAse is now looking for funding on Kickstarter. The company behind it claims that future versions will be compatible with all smartphones.

    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset

Like the Dive, vrAse uses your smartphone to display 3D content. vrAse is also highly customizable. For instance, you can change its case or its optics to fit your needs. In its default state, its optics can emulate a 200-inch movie screen, though they don’t specify what distance that would be viewed at. Most of all, you can easily upgrade its “hardware.” All it takes is to swap in a better phone.

Pledge at least £48 (~$74 USD) on Kickstarter to get a vrAse case as a reward. But before you pledge know that the Kickstarter release of vrAse will only be compatible with six smartphones: the iPhone 5, the HTC One, the Sony Xperia Z, the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 2 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 3 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 4 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 5 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 6 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 7 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 8 300x250
    vrase smartphone vr 3d headset 9 300x250

I’m excited to see 3D gaming being more and more affordable, but I don’t think we can compare vrAse to the Rift. First off, the vrAse is only compatible with media and games that are in Side by Side (SbS) format. Second, it doesn’t seem to have its own head-tracking software, which is a big part of what makes the Rift so immersive. Perhaps developers can integrate head-tracking into their games or apps if vrAse takes off. Finally, the Rift has a distinct advantage in terms of hardware, because PCs are more powerful than even the latest smartphones. Still, I think many people would love to enjoy immersive 3D video or mobile games for the right price. Perhaps Dive and vrAse are on to something here.

LG IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC unveiled at IFA 2013

lg-ips-monitorThe larger, the better. That is more or less the mantra of many people. After all, just take a look at our surroundings – the rich do want ever larger mansions, not to mention bigger bank vaults to hoard ever increasing earthly treasure, while workers want bigger pay packets to bring home. Fast food restaurants always want you to upsize your meals for a dollar or two, but are all of those really necessary? However, when it comes to work and the well being of your health, perhaps “larger is better” is a mantra that is worth following where the desktop computer is concerned. LG might be on to something here with the unveiling of their LG IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC (also known as model V960) at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

This is the latest addition that will further expand the cinematically proportioned display range. The IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC is proud to be classified as “an advanced desktop” which is said to pack in enough punch to deliver all the advantages of a 21:9 monitor, without the added bulk of another computer chassis placed somewhere in your room. The V960 will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 8 as the operating system of choice, hence offering a full-fledged PC experience that will be accompanied by a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M GPU for advanced graphics processing. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so that GeForce GT 640M GPU ought to be a relief for gamers and users who want high quality graphical performance on their machine.

Other features of the V960 include picture-in-picture (PIP) functionality, so that you can multitask – for instance, checking up on the latest stock prices while watching a TV channel simultaneously. Apart from that LG’s AIO PC will ship with a keyboard and mouse so that you can get started right out of the box. There is still no word on pricing or regional availability as at press time, but we do hope to hear more about those aspects soon.
