A Detailed Description of Why Human Skin Is Amazing

As Minute Earth rightly points out, we could avoid a lot of flesh wounds by having thicker armored skin like a pangolin. But the energy needed to generate and maintain that armor wasn’t evolutionarily worth it for us to expend because we put so much fuel into our enormous brains. We can think of ways to escape danger or make intelligent plans to avoid dangerous situations in the first place. And we do have scales, they’re just not visible to the naked eye, but they protect us from tons of microbes. A lot is going on with our skin as the layers form, live out their life rising to the surface and then die. Watch this video and then go exfoliate.

Greek Mystery Girl Maria’s Bulgarian Mother Denies Selling Daughter

The Bulgarian Roma mother of Maria, a young blonde girl whose fate made headlines around the world when she was found in a Greek Roma camp, tearfully denied on Sunday that she had sold her daughter.

“I have not sold her! I have not… I gave her, I made a mistake. But I haven’t taken any money,” Sasha Ruseva, 35, told private television station TV7 in her first public appearance since DNA tests proved on Friday that she was Maria’s biological mother.

“I want Maria back! I am her mother, how could I not want her. I do not care what they say. I want Maria back with me,” she said through tears.

The four-year-old girl, with her blonde hair and green eyes, was wrongfully thought to be a Western European child abducted by a Roma couple she was found living with the family near the Greek town of Farsala.

Greek and Bulgarian police however tracked down her real parents to a Roma ghetto in the central Bulgarian town of Nikolaevo on Thursday and are now investigating the mother for allegedly selling the child in Greece in 2009.

Maria is currently in the care of Smile of the Child, an Athens-based charity.

“I gave birth to her in Lamia (in Greece). I raised her until she was seven months old. Then I had to return to Bulgaria to take care of my other children when my eldest daughter, who was caring for them, got married,” Ruseva said on Sunday.

She said she could not bring the baby back with her as she did not have any documents.

“A young woman came to me and said: ‘I do not have children. Give her to me. I’ll take care of her just as you would. Come back to Greece to take her when you can’,” Ruseva recalled.

“But I gave birth to two more children here and I could not go back. I did not have the money.”

Ruseva and her mentally ill husband Atanas, 38, have another nine children, five of whom are also fair-skinned and blonde in contrast to their parents’ dark complexions and brownish-black hair.

The family lives in a single-room ramshackle house and their daily menu consists of bread and potatoes, Ruseva said, adding that she had never been contacted by social workers.

“I am not a criminal,” Ruseva pleaded, saying that she was now “scared” by the possibility of going to to jail.

If found guilty of selling her daughter, she risks a prison term of up to six years.

Aluminum N64 Portable: Metaltendo

Over the years, I’ve seen some pretty impressive custom-built handhelds, and here’s another that’s definitely worth checking out. This Nintendo 64 portable system features a beautiful aluminum case, and even aluminum buttons.

It was built by Travis Breen and looks as good as any DIY handheld I’ve seen. He created this beautiful portable system from two big hunks of aluminum, then used a milling machine and lathe to cut out the pieces. He took some inspiration from the design and construction of the MacBook Pro, but says that the console has a “more inviting” textured finish. The finished handheld measures in a fairly hefty 5.65″ wide x 11″ wide x 1.225″ thick, and weighs 2.73 pounds.

I’m not sure on the screen size, but the LCD looks like it’s about a 7-incher. Those five black dots along the bottom of the screen aren’t just decorative either – they’re the power on/off, reset, start, and volume up/down buttons. Each of the buttons and D-Pad are constructed from aluminum and anodized in black.

Under the hood are components from an original N64, along with an EverDrive 64 so he can load up true Nintendo 64 ROM images from an SD card and play them all on the original N64 hardware – a much better solution than using an emulator. And yes, this thing is truly portable. It runs on a pair of 5000 mAH batteries, so it can play for up to 3 hours on a charge. Not bad for a console which you used to have to plug into a wall outlet.

While the system isn’t for sale, Travis does admit that he might part with it if someone throws enough money at him.
