Take A Look At The First Instagram Ad

Take A Look At The First Instagram Ad

Earlier this month Instagram confirmed that it would soon start running photo and video ads. It said that the ads would go live within a couple of months, initially for users in the U.S. who might get to see the “occasional ad” in their feed. Instagram has released a sample ad today which is going to be the first advertisement that users see in their feeds, Instagram says that this ad is going to be distributed in the “coming week.”

This particular advertisement is a one time ad that is being distributed so that users can get an idea of how ads will look and feel on Instagram. Ads will contain a “Sponsored” label where the timestamp is usually found, this stamp will accompany all paid photo and video advertisements. Tapping this label will educate users more on how ads work on Instagram. Running a test ad first would give users a feel of how posts from brands that they do not follow look like in their feeds, so they won’t be caught by surprise once Instagram opens up its ads to a select number of brands, ones that already have a solid following. The test ad will initially only be shown to users based in the U.S.

Google Nexus 5 Concept Makes You Wish It Were Already Released

Apple has finally announced the iPad Air (aka iPad 5) and the iPad Mini retina, and as expected, the blogosphere is completely abuzz about it.

I think it’s exciting news, but ever since I made the switch from iOS to Android, I find myself anticipating what Google comes up with more than Apple. (No offense to any Apple fanboys and fangirls, it’s just a personal preference.)

Google has been mum about the next version of their smartphone, which people are dubbing as the Nexus 5, but rumors are already flying about the device, and some people say it’s going to be a phablet, which is a cross between a tablet and a phone.

Jumping on the bandwagon is designer Jo Enaje with her concept design for the next-generation Nexus. She envisions the next Nexus as having thinner screen edges compared to its predecessor and having more colors available in its line. It reminds me of Apple’s iPhone 5C somewhat with all the colors, and personally, I don’t think colorful is Google’s style but I could be wrong.

As you can see, Jo keeps the bezels to a minimum, making the design as fuss-free and simplistic as possible, just as Google has done with its Nexus smartphones in the past. The designs are just a mock-up, of course, but already it’s getting a lot of people excited (including yours truly), especially since the rumored announcement date for the actual device is this October 30th.

Concept aside, the Nexus 5′s purported service manual was leaked earlier this month, which specifies its UMTS/GSM/CDMA/LTE compatibility. Its wide range of connectivity features mean that it’s best to take out a contract that offers 3G, 4G, or high-speed Wi-Fi, but they don’t have to be pricey plans, since telcos are always offering deals to entice you to switch networks.

Other alleged specs include a 4.95-inch 1080p display, an 8MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front camera, wireless charging, Slimport connectivity, a microSIM slot, NFC, and Bluetooth 3.0.

What do you think about Jo’s concept for the Nexus 5?

    Galaxy Note 3 Review

Galaxy Note 3 ReviewWe saw the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for the first time at IFA in Berlin when it was unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Now the device is available this month for 299.99 from all four carriers, and we spent some real-world usage time with a retail unit from Sprint.

Samsung has come a long way since the release of the original Galaxy Note 1 in 2011. Then, most people made fun of me when I was placing calls from this “ridiculously big phone”. Fast forward to 2013, it looks like the Galaxy Note smartphone lineup is taken very seriously now, and Samsung has sold over 30 million Galaxy Note 2. Ultimately, the Korean giant started the “large display phones” trend in the mobile industry and recent flagship smartphones such as the LG G2, feature over 5-inch displays while they are not even categorized in the phablet segment anymore. 5” is the new normal.

The most notable feature upgrades in the Galaxy Note 3 are the full HD 5.7inch AMOLED display, the new powerful processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (2.3 Ghz), 3GB RAM, an improved S-Pen and the new design language with a faux-stitched leather back that replaces the overly criticized plastic body of the Galaxy Note 2.

On the software side, the most interesting innovation is the Air Command menu that works with the S-Pen and gives access to five practical productivity features that we will describe in the review. (more…)

    SlideRocket: Amazing Online Presentation Creator

This article was written on March 20, 2008 by CyberNet.

Omar tipped me off yesterday to a rather amazing presentation creator currently in private Beta called SlideRocket. It’s completely Flash-based, and the interface I would say is one of the best out of all the competing products.

I tinkered around with it for quite awhile, and I was impressed with the number of features it includes. Not only can you upload media such as pictures and videos, but you can also search online sites such as Flickr and Yahoo for media to add to your presentation. Other standard items like charts, shapes, and tables can also be added.

There is also a plugin system that I think will really help attract users. In a few clicks you can search and add a famous quote, word definition, or Yahoo map to a presentation without ever leaving SlideRocket. It’s still quite limited at this point, but if they build up the number of plugins it would become a very attractive service.

The thing that I enjoyed the most, however, would have to be the varying slide transitions that are available. I’ve embedded one of their presentations below so that you can see what I’m talking about:

There is just one problem…there are too many of these darn online office applications out there! At this point SlideRocket isn’t even publicly available, and it won’t be until this summer. If I start creating all of my presentations with them how do I know that they’ll be here tomorrow? I guess you don’t really know that with any of the online alternatives out there, but there’s a little more reassurance when using Google Docs or Zoho since they have become well established in their field.

My inquiring mind is now wondering that if a better online office suite emerges are you less inclined to use it if it’s not coming from someone that is well established?

Apple Retail Stores To Open Early On iPad Air Launch Day

Apple Retail Stores To Open Early On iPad Air Launch Day

Apple launched its hotly anticipated tablet, the iPad Air, on October 22nd after months of endless rumors. iPad-hungry customers will be lining up outside Apple Retail Stores to pick up the new tablet, most probably. This time around, Apple had decided to open up its stores an hour early than their usual opening time. Apple Retail Stores will open on 8 a.m. local time on November 1st, when the iPad Air goes on sale. This isn’t the first time that the company is doing this, only recently it opened up stores an hour early for the launch of iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c.

As was the case with the iPhone 5s, Apple isn’t taking iPad Air pre-orders in advance. Customers will be allowed to pre-order their units on November 1st, but like before, they won’t be able to place an order in advance so that it is delivered to them on launch day. Its likely that iPad Air pre-orders might be opened up on 12:01 a.m., November 1st. The iPad Air is not the only tablet that Apple has announced, the company also unveiled the Retina iPad Mini. Though it is not known right now exactly when this tablet goes on sale, Apple says it will become available later in November.

The Birthplace of the Cellphone Is Being Turned Into a Mall

The Birthplace of the Cellphone Is Being Turned Into a Mall

Think Apple’s forthcoming Cupertino headquarters is the first corporate space ship to touch down in America? Not so: In 1962 the legendary R&D hub, Bell Labs, opened a glittering, 500-acre headquarters in semi-rural New Jersey. Today, it’s the focus of an ambitious reuse scheme that could turn it into a commercial hub, complete with a spa and a hotel.
