Sanford, Florida, Neighborhood Watch Can’t Carry Guns Or Pursue Suspects, New Rules Say

Neighborhood watch volunteers will soon be forbidden from carrying guns and from pursuing suspects in Sanford, Fla., the town where Trayvon Martin was killed last year by George Zimmerman.

The new rules also include mandatory background checks and require that volunteers be trained and provide regular status updates to the police, Reuters reports.

The changes to the program come at the request of Sanford’s new police chief, Cecil Smith, who called the old program dysfunctional, according to Orlando-based outlet News 13.

FAA Changes Electronics Rule; Delta Aims To Be The First Airline To Allow Gate-To-Gate Play

On Thursday, the FAA announced that it will allow airline passengers to use smartphones, tablets and other personal electronics during almost the entire flight.

The FAA said that planes will have to meet certain criteria for protecting its systems against electronic interference; most new planes are expected to meet criteria, the Associated Press reports, but timing will depend on the airline, not the FAA.

Almost simultaneous to the FAA’s news conference, Delta issued a statement saying that they were, essentially, ready to go, with FAA approval, stating that their entire fleet have passed previous testing for “PED tolerance.” Delta Connection flights, they said, would be compliant by the end of the year.

Orson Scott Card Calls Backlash To Anti-Gay Views ‘Savage, Lying Deceptive Personal Attacks’

“Ender’s Game” author Orson Scott Card is calling criticism in response to his anti-gay views “savage, lying deceptive personal attacks.”

In an interview with Deseret News, he opened up about the backlash — which includes a proposed boycott of the “Ender’s Game” movie — he has faced over his homophobic ideas.

“I’ve had no criticism. I’ve had savage, lying, deceptive personal attacks, but no actual criticism because they’ve never addressed any of my actual ideas,” Card told the Utah publication. “Character assassination seems to be the only political method that is in use today, and I don’t play that game, and you can’t defend against it. All you can do is try to offer ideas, and for those who want to listen to ideas, great. For those who simply want to punish you for not falling in line with their dogmas, there’s really not much you can do about it.”
