Joe Biden Anticipates ‘Remarkable Changes’ For Treatment Of Mental Illness

BOSTON — BOSTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says the country is on the cusp of what he called “remarkable changes” in the treatment of mental illness.

Speaking at a forum in Boston on Wednesday, Biden said that as a result of President Barack Obama’s health care law, more people have access to care for mental illness. The law bars insurance companies from denying coverage due to preexisting conditions like bipolar disorder.

2013 13″ MacBook Air Gets Significant Battery Improvements With OS X Mavericks

2013 13 MacBook Air Gets Significant Battery Improvements With OS X MavericksIf you own a 2013 MacBook Air that is still running on OS X Mountain Lion, you might want to consider update to the free OS X Mavericks update that was released just yesterday. Granted there are some changes made to the operating system that might throw you off, especially if you’ve been using Mountain Lion for a while now, but perhaps the gains in battery life might be able to offset those changes. According to a rather comprehensive and lengthy review of OS X Mavericks by John Siracusa over at Ars Technica, he found that installing Mavericks managed to boost battery life on MacBook computers rather significantly.

As you can see in the bar graphs above, installing Mavericks on a 2007 MacBook Pro saw the laptop’s battery life jump from about 3.15 hours to 3.93 hours. While it is an improvement, it’s not that much, at least when compared to the likes of a 2013 MacBook Air which saw its battery life jump from an average of 12.07 hours to a massive 15.68 hours! This is thanks to the power saving features that have been built into Mavericks, such as Timer Coalescing, Compressed Memory, and App Nap. Of course we don’t expect all MacBook Air owners to get those numbers as each person uses their laptops in a different way and with different settings, but hopefully the update should allow you to notice battery life improvements at the very least.

Microsoft Exec Calls Apple’s iWork “Watered Down”

Microsoft Exec Calls Apples iWork Watered Down

During Apple’s event yesterday, not only did the Cupertino company unveil the new iPad Air and the iPad mini 2 with Retina display, but they also unveiled updates to their iWork lineup of productivity software, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynotes. Given that Microsoft’s Office lineup of productivity software pretty much does the same thing, it wasn’t surprising that a senior Microsoft executive decided to take a swing at Apple’s recently updated iWork suite, calling them “watered down productivity apps”.

This was written in a blog post titled, “Apple and oranges”whereby Corporate Vice President of Communications, Frank Shaw, tried to poke holes in Apple’s recent launch. Shaw was also quoted as saying, “Surface and Surface 2 both include Office, the world’s most popular, most powerful productivity software for free and are priced below both the iPad 2 and iPad Air respectively [… ] Making Apple’s decision to build the price of their less popular and less powerful iWork into their tablets not a very big (or very good) deal.” Given that the first generation of Surface tablets could hardly be called a success, we think that Shaw might be getting ahead of himself here, but what do you guys think? Do you think that iWork apps are “watered down”?

John Sculley Could Be A Potential Bidder For BlackBerry

John Sculley Could Be A Potential Bidder For BlackBerryIt seems that everyone wants a piece of BlackBerry these days despite reports of the company’s demise, although we’re guessing this could be why many are showing interest as they believe they might be able to acquire the company for a good price. In any case the latest report comes from the Globe and Mail who have published a report, suggesting that former Apple CEO, John Sculley, might be one of the possible parties that could be interested in purchasing BlackBerry. Given that Sculley was recently quoted as saying that he believes BlackBerry will survive, the report by the Globe and Mail might not be so far-fetched after all.

When asked to comment on the rumors, Sculley mentioned that he could not comment on the matter, but did state that “I’ve been a long-time BlackBerry fan and user.” Given that he did not actually deny the report would suggest that there is a grain of truth to it, although until it has been made official, do take it with a grain of salt for now. So far we’ve heard how BlackBerry could be picked up by financial institutions and tech giants, which is admittedly a lot of interest for a company that many seem to think will collapse.

    Can a Sponge Absorb Mercury?

A sponge is a sponge because its porous material is able to absorb liquid of any kind. But what about liquid metal? Can a sponge actually absorb the heavy quicksilver material known as mercury? Not at all. At best, a little bit of mercury goop gets caught on top of the sponge and slides away like its T-1000 shaping itself back together. [Tao Fledermaus via The Awesomer]
