No New Hardware At October 24th Event, Says Google

No New Hardware At October 24th Event, Says GoogleGoogle has stepped forward to mention (according to the good people over at Electronista who actually decided to ask them) that there will be no new hardware announcements at the upcoming October 24th event, which would also mean that the highly rumored Nexus 5 device which has seen its fair share of leaks will not make an appearance then, too. When asked concerning a possible hardware release, a Google spokeswoman mentioned, “The October 24th event will not be a launch of a device or hardware, rather a mixer for consumer press to better acquaint themselves with Google Play.”

That means there will be no news or hardware launch at this particular event, so it will all be more on a relationship building experience, as well as for the consumer press to be able to rub shoulders with Google Play in order to know it more intimately. We do know that there will be “music, movies, games, and a special performance by Capital Cities.” Well, I guess for those of us who have been hankering after something a whole lot more – the Nexus 5 in particular, it is time to continue exercising the virtue of patience! After all, don’t good things come to those who wait?

Microsoft tries to clarify Windows 8 app support on Xbox One

Dell’s been claiming that all your top Windows 8 apps could run on and be synced with the incoming Xbox One — but Microsoft’s saying that’s not exactly how it is. According to AllThingsD, and echoed by the spokespeople we’ve contacted, not all Windows 8 apps will run on Xbox One. Does that mean …

iPad 2 Is Still Apple’s Most Widely Used Tablet

iPad 2 Is Still Apples Most Widely Used TabletThe iPad 2 is Apple’s second-generation iPad and is currently two generations behind the latest iPad, although in less than a day it will be three generations behind. However it seems that despite the tablet being old, slower, and featuring a less-sharp display compared to the iPad 3 and 4, it remains the most popular iPad around. This is according to a recent study conducted by Localytics who has found that the iPad 2 is still Apple’s most widely used tablet and has more active users than the iPad 3 and iPad 4 combined! Their study finds that the iPad 2 accounts for 38% of all active iOS tablets, with the iPad 3 only commanding 19%, while the fourth-gen iPad comes in at 18%.

So why is the iPad 2 still so popular despite it not being as “good” as the third or fourth-gen iPad? According to Localytics, “this could be an indication that the innovation in tablets is slowing down and the perceived differentiation of the latest-generation tablets is getting smaller with each new release.” It could also be possible that cost plays a factor as well, with the iPad 2 being cheaper than its successors, so for those who aren’t too fussy over hardware and display resolution, the cheaper iPad 2 would be a logical choice. What do you guys think?

Nokia Lumia 1520 Leaked Again With Treasure Tag Key Finder Beside It

Nokia Lumia 1520 Leaked Again With Treasure Tag Key Finder Beside ItLeaks of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1520 have been happening lately, ranging from specifications to its possible price point. Well, this is to be expected since the Lumia 1520 is widely tipped to be introduced at Abu Dhabi, and this time around, we have yet another shot of the Nokia Lumia 1520, except that it will be accompanied by a Treasure Tag key finder.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 in this particular leak is shown from a new angle, which would allow us to get a better idea of just how incredibly slim the form factor of this device is. It does seem as though it is going to be just as thin, if not thinner, compared to the current Nokia Lumia 1020 flagship. There has been unconfirmed reports trickling through that the Lumia 1520 will most likely feature a 6″ display, a 20-megapixel shooter as well as a 3,390 mAh battery.

We should also be greeted by a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and Full HD 1080p display underneath the hood, accompanied by the Nokia Glance Background. As for the Nokia Treasure Tag, this tiny keychain device will be hooked to your bunch of keys, where the phone can be used to make it ring so that they are easy to locate. No more looking around frantically for your keys, eh?

T-Mobile Tweets His Love Of The Galaxy Note 3 From His iPhone

T Mobile Tweets His Love Of The Galaxy Note 3 From His iPhoneWe’ve seen our fair share of celebrity tweets in the past where they have attempted to promote a phone or platform that is not an iOS device, but end up tweeting that promotional tweet using an iPhone. It is pretty funny and a bit embarrassing for those celebrities and brands but it happens, with the latest case being a tweet by none other than T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, who tweeted his love for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, only to have his tweet discovered that it was done via his iPhone.

The tweet reads, “Glad @SamsungMobile decided to bring phablets to the states. I don’t know what I’d do without my #Note3!” Legere was then notified that his tweet came from his iPhone to which he tweeted a response saying, “oops. I carry both as you may know! That was funny.” He then followed up with a photo where he showed off both the iPhone 5s and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Given Legere’s role as the CEO of a major carrier in the US, we highly doubt that he only has one phone on him and it really isn’t surprising that he carries more than one, although admittedly his little hiccup with the tweets was a bit funny.

iWatch Concept Takes Design Inspiration From Nike’s FuelBand

iWatch Concept Takes Design Inspiration From Nikes FuelBandWe have seen a couple of iWatch concepts and for the most part, they look like your typical watch/smartwatches albeit with a pretty sleek interface. However what if Apple’s iWatch did not actually look like a watch? Wouldn’t that be a nice twist to the proceedings? Well that’s pretty much what Thomas Bogner did with his own mockup of the iWatch (as pictured above). His interpretation of the iWatch appears to share a very similar design philosophy to Nike’s FuelBand, albeit with what appears to be a touchscreen interface where users will be able to swipe in between the modes, such as switching between the time, apps, music controls, and etc.

According to Bogner, he claims that his design is something of a “bastard child of a Fuel Band and an iPhone”, and that by using the FuelBand, it got him thinking as to what he thinks a smartwatch could look like, and the type of functionality that it offers. It is admittedly a good idea, especially if you thought that accessories like the Nike FuelBand and Jawbone Up have been nicely designed, although its doesn’t doesn’t exactly scream Apple, but we suppose that’s what concepts are for. What do you guys think? Is this an iWatch design you would like to see made reality? Or do you prefer your smartwatches to actually look more like watches?

Netflix Has Over 40 Million Customers, Beats HBO In Paid US Subscribers

Netflix Has Over 40 Million Customers, Beats HBO In Paid US SubscribersNetflix certainly seems to be growing from strength to strength, as the company’s results for the third quarter have been announced (PDF Link), and in one of the more notable numbers that investors would like to look at would be the total number of US subscribers – which will include trial accounts, by the way. The magical number that has made many investors happy this time around would be 29.93 million, which happens to outstrip HBO’s last count of 28.7 million. This is definitely an upward trend, especially when you take into consideration how last year at the same time, Netflix reported 25.1 million US customers, which included trial subscribers.

Having already overtaken HBO’s US customer base in April this year, it has also experienced growth internationally, touching 9.19 million subscribers with the hope of adding another three million customers more for the next quarter. There is the new original series Orange is the New Black which has been touted to be a hit, although viewing statistics remain a secret with Netflix, but they have said that the show will end the year “as our most watched original series ever.” How far do you think a company like Netflix will eventually grow to? The push in modern day technology has certainly helped it become a more viable entertainment choice.

Windows 8.1 Allegedly Causes Mouse Lags In Certain Games

Windows 8.1 Allegedly Causes Mouse Lags In Certain GamesFor those of you who happen to use the PC as your gaming platform of choice, you might read this with a bit of trepidation. Microsoft’s recent update to Windows 8.1 might actually upset your gaming mojo, depending on the type of games that you happen to have residing on your SSD/hard drive, in addition to the brand of mouse that you own. There has been some online reports going around that claim the update to Windows 8.1 might render some games unplayable, and it was attributed to an “improvement” in handling DPI for multiple monitors.

Apart from that, the changes in the DPI framework have resulted in games which do not rely on Raw Input or DirectInput to get hit with a huge amount of mouse lag. Some of the games listed which were allegedly affected are Deus Ex: Human Revolution, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Prypiat, Metro 2033 and select titles in Activision’s Call of Duty series. Not only that, it also seems to affect hardware, where among them are mice products with a high polling rate and high DPI. So far, Microsoft has yet to respond officially on this issue, and hopefully they will have a workaround pretty soon as gamers can grow to be a pretty impatient bunch.

Google Has Turned Minecraft Into A Quantum Physics Simulator

Google's Quantum AI Lab Brings Quantum Physics To MinecraftThe team at Google’s Quantum AI Lab have recently done something rather exciting with the immensely popular block building video game Minecraft: they’ve added quantum physics. qCraft, as it’s called, is a mod that adds blocks which exhibit a number of theories present in current-day quantum physics.

Battlefield Could Hit Mobile Platforms, Says EA

Battlefield Could Hit Mobile Platforms, Says EASomewhere within the interview with The New York Times Bits blog, EA’s recently-appointed head of mobile development, Frank Gibeau decided to answer the question that touched on whether Battlefield will eventually be playable on smaller screens, saying, “You can play Battlefield on a tablet in commander mode. We are working on a mobile game of Battlefield that will be high-end and high-performance. It’s our bet that we can successfully pull that off. We’re embarking on something no one has ever done before — to get these games to inter-operate between platforms. Will it work? It already has in some cases. Will it work for all franchises? Not all franchises will make the transition. Battlefield might be a little harder.”

So far, we only know of a single Battlefield game on record that has ever hit the mobile platform, and that happened to be on iOS devices. This happened a couple of years ago, being released alongside Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Needless to say, we would like to think that we are not too far off the mark with the thought of the new game running on DICE’s Frostbite Go engine. Does the idea of playing a Battlefield game on a device with a smaller screen appeal to you?
