Gold iPhone 5s Nicknamed As ‘The Kardashian Phone’ By Apple Employees

Gold iPhone 5s Nicknamed As ‘The Kardashian Phone’ By Apple EmployeesWhen Apple first announced both the iPhone 5s as well as the iPhone 5c, I am pretty sure that they did not expect demand for the gold version of the iPhone 5s to far outstrip the other colors (silver and gray), and the supposed budget friendly iPhone 5c did not manage to capture the hearts and imagination of as many people as Apple wanted. Well, apparently word has gotten out that the gold iPhone 5s was given a nickname by some Apple employees, who have jokingly called it ‘The Kardashian Phone’. This is apparently no rumor, as it has been tweeted out by the NYT’s Nick Bilton.

Of course, one ought to bear in mind that this is far from a serious code name, as it remains nothing more than an internal joke. After all, Kim Kardashian herself seems to have a penchant for all things bling, with her owning an iPhone 5 which came in anodized gold way ahead of Apple’s iPhone 5s, as depicted in the image above. What do you think future colors of the iPhone generations will look like? Will gold be a mainstay from now on considering that it is the apparent popularity in popularity stakes to date? You can check out more of the gold iPhone 5s in Apple’s first iPhone 5s TV ad which was run earlier today.

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Arriving On US Cellular 8th November

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Arriving On US Cellular 8th NovemberGood new US Cellular customers, if you guys were a little jealous that the other major carriers, such as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile were all offering their subscribers Apple’s new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, you’re in luck because US Cellular has announced that they soon will start carrying both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c come Friday, November the 8th, according to an advertisement on its website. We’re not sure what took US Cellular so long to make the announcement, especially since other smaller carriers have since debuted the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on their networks, but we guess better late than never, right?

In any case we expect that the addition of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c to US Cellular’s portfolio of smartphones will help maintain, perhaps even expand, its current subscriber base. We have seen in the past how carriers who do not offer the iPhone to its customers have basically chased them away to competing carriers that do, so we guess it is in US Cellular’s best interest to offer up the phone as soon as possible! No word on how much the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c will cost on US Cellular’s network, but presumably its asking price on-contract will be similar to the price that other carriers are asking for. Either way if you’re a US Cellular subscriber looking forward to either device, the 8th of November is a date you’ll want to mark down on your calendar.

Kobo Arc 7 HD And Kobo Arc 10 HD Make FCC Appearance

Kobo Arc 7 HD And Kobo Arc 10 HD Make FCC AppearanceWe did bring you word about the existence of the Kobo Arc 7 HD and Kobo Arc 10 HD at the end of August, and here we are, nearing the end of October, with word that both tablets have already made their way over to the FCC for approval. That can only mean one thing upon approval, that both devices are well on their way to hit store shelves. Majority of the details on the FCC site do seem to be concerned about regulatory tests that touch on the wireless capabilities of the tablets, although it is also not rare to find other interesting bit of details such as user manuals which are equipped with useful drawings and diagrams that depict just how you would do things such as to turn the tablet off, to enable airplane mode, or adjust other settings. Elementary stuff, really.

Just to refresh our memories, the Kobo Arc 10 HD happens to be a decent performer on paper, with a 10.1” 2560 x 1600 pixel display, an NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and up to 9.5 hours of battery life, carrying an expected price tag of $400. As for the Kobo Arc 7 HD tablet, it does seem to be geared more towards the budget oriented bunch, sporting a $199 price tag with a 7” 1920 x 1200 pixel display, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, and anywhere from 16GB to 32GB of internal memory.

Analyst Reaffirms Retina iPad Mini 2 Launch, But Will Not Come With Touch ID

Analyst Reaffirms Retina iPad Mini 2 Launch, But Will Not Come With Touch IDJust the other day it was reported that analyst Peter Misek reiterated his belief that Apple’s 22nd of October event would reveal a new Retina iPad mini 2, and how his belief is echoed by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities. Given that both these analysts have some clout when it comes to predicting Apple’s next move, it would stand to reason that they might be right. Kuo however, has shared more details about his predictions, such as how the Gold finish and fingerprint sensors will not make their way into the new iPads. (more…)

New OS X Mavericks GM Build Released

New OS X Mavericks GM Build ReleasedApple has recently released a Golden Master build of its upcoming operating system, OS X Mavericks, and for those unfamiliar, a Golden Master build is essentially the final version of the beta and it is also the same version that non-beta testers can look forward to once the software has been officially released to the public. In any case it seems that a day before their 22nd of October event, Apple has quietly released an updated version of the Golden Master build of OS X Mavericks with the new build number being 13A603 which is higher compared to the previous release where its build number was 13A598.

While it is unclear as to what sort of changes Apple made, it is speculated that this was not a planned update and that it was probably released to address some bugs that were spotted at the last minute, which we guess we can’t really complain about. For developers looking to get their hands on the latest build, it will not be available via the Mac App Store, but instead developers will need to hit up the Dev Center for the direct download. OS X Mavericks was announced back in the middle of the year during Apple’s WWDC 2013 event, but it is believed that the software will finally see a release, or at least have a release date shared on Apple’s 22nd of October event which will also see the launch of new iPads amongst other things.

Brian Eno — Ambient 1: Music for Airports

In high school I had a weird ritual where I would listen to this suite while I did my math homework. But it sort of makes sense because Brian Eno wanted this music to reduce tension. He conceived it while observing the stress and rush at a German airport during the mid-1970s. And it really works.

    Nintendo Wii Discontinued In Japan

Nintendo Wii Discontinued In JapanBoy, how fast time flies. Just a few weeks after Nintendo announced that they would cease the manufacturing of the Nintendo Wii for Japan, the gaming company has listed the console as “discontinued” (after some translation work, of course) on its Japanese website. I guess this means that if you happen to be in Japan and would love to pick up a Nintendo Wii, either as a replacement for your broken Wii or as a gift to a nephew, it would not bode well. You would most probably have to go purchase a backwards-compatible Wii U or take the road that some of us might want to avoid – checking out second hand Wiis, or perhaps hunt down leftover stock at retailers.

Of course, the curtain has not yet fallen down on the Nintendo Wii, as the standard issue Wii and Wii Mini will still be available for sale in other countries. This does not mean that they will still be hanging around for many more years, as it is likely that in due time, as next generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony roll out, Nintendo would most probably do the same to the Wii in other countries as they have just done in Japan.

Nokia leaks Lumia 1520 details on Chinese online store: 20MP PureView camera, Snapdragon 800 processor

Looking for more evidence that Nokia’s about to unleash an oversized Windows Phone? You’ve got it: the company’s official Tmall store (an online marketplace in China) recently published a product page for the fabled Lumia 1520. There’s no images to speak of, but the listing agrees with the handset’s …

NYC Gets Tallest And Thinnest Building

NYC Gets Tallest And Thinnest BuildingAh, the Big Apple. New York City is one potpourri of cultures, people and interesting innovations, and it certainly loves being in the center of attention. Hence, it is not surprising to hear architectural firm SHoP Architects playing up the possibility of working on what could very well be the tallest and thinnest building in the city, which will be a place for folks to reside in instead of a plump corporation’s headquarters address. It is said that this new building will stand tall at 1,350 feet, and up to 10 floors of residents will be able to gaze down upon the Empire State building, which was once the tallest building in the world.

One ought to take note that the new apartment building will not come with that much living space – as it should be approximately 45 feet wide, which means the elevators will be jostling for space alongside your living space, so do expect a rather cramped living experience if you decide to part with your hard earned money for this bad boy. It definitely is not going to come cheap at all, considering the high price of land in this metropolis. However, just how bad is it that you want to own the bragging rights to look down on the Empire State building?

China Introduces Li-Fi Bulb That Lets You Go Online

China Introduces Li Fi Bulb That Lets You Go OnlineThis might be the modern day equivalent of an “Eureka!” moment, as scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics claim to have discovered the ability of a microchip to emit Wi-Fi after being embedded with a one-watt LED bulb, where the signal strength is good enough to offer Internet connectivity to not one, two, or even a trio of computers, but four! This particular discovery has led to it being called “Li-Fi”, where it will rely on the use of a special LED light bulb which operates with light as the carrier of choice, ditching the traditional radio frequency bus instead. It has been said that data rates through this new medium would be able to be as fast as 150 megabits per second, which would mean that we could be looking at faster, cheaper and more energy efficient wireless signals down the road.

Li-Fi apparently sips a mere 5% of the energy that is required to power Wi-Fi-emitting devices, where the latter will also need a plethora of other systems to work together including energy cooling systems. This is one discovery that could very well revolutionize the way we make use of Internet connectivity. Li-Fi is still in its infancy, however, and would not be made a standard anytime soon. After all, it right now does not work if the light bulb is turned off, or if it is blocked, but I am quite sure that there will be advances made down the road which will overcome such obstacles!
