Couple In Shanghai Sell Baby Daughter Online To Purchase An iPhone

Couple In Shanghai Sell Baby Daughter Online To Purchase An iPhone

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard someone do something crazy in order to raise enough money that they can spend on Apple’s most wanted products. Back in 2011, we reported how a teenager in China had sold his kidney for roughly $3,000 to purchase an iPad 2 as well as an iPhone 4. Selling your kidney is one thing, selling your child is a whole different ballgame. Chinese state media reports that a young Chinese couple in Shanghai is facing criminal punishment after they sold their baby daughter online and used the money to buy an iPhone.

Reportedly, the mother also purchased other products as well as expensive sports shoes. The purchases were made online after the child was put up for adoption through online postings and money was taken in return. Prosecutors in Shanghai have brought a case for human trafficking. On the other hand, the couple argues that since they already have two children and want the girl to have a better life, they offered her up for adoption. They say that they didn’t do it for “obtaining benefits.” It has not been officially disclosed how much the couple took for their baby daughter, but according to their various online postings, the couple was seeking around 30,000 yuan to 50,000 yuan for the baby. Obviously one can’t blame Apple for making such popular products, the blame rests entirely on those who commit such acts and leave a bad example which someday, someone else might follow.

Beginning in May 2010, the NSA gained access to the Mexican Presidencia domain on the Mexican Presidential network and began monitoring then-president Felipe Calderon’s email account, according to a document leaked to Der Spiegel by Edward Snowden. The document also shows that the NSA has been surveilling the Brazilian government.

Google Rolls Out Invites For An Event On October 24th

Google Rolls Out Invites For An Event On October 24th

The world is anxiously waiting on Google to finally launch its next smartphone, the Nexus 5, alongside Android 4.4 KitKat. Given the nature of these announcements, it’s likely that Google will conduct a formal event to unveil them. The company has started sending out invites for an event on October 24th in New York City, but unfortunately, it seems that the event doesn’t have anything to do with these products.

So what does Google plan on announcing at this event? Judging by the invite, it looks like the event will be focused on Google Play. The text on the invitation is certainly vague, it doesn’t offer any hint about what to expect. “Join us for a night out with Google Play. Music, movies, games, and a special performance by Capital Cities,” reads the invite. We’ll just have to wait until October 24th and see what Google has planned. Perhaps it might have something to do with the rumored Play Store refresh, its unlikely that the company will conduct an event just for that, but there’s a possibility that the refresh might be a small part of the festivities. As far as the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat event is concerned, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the invites for that particular event are rolled out in the near future.

Apple and the emperor’s new wearable tech

Dear emperor, what a lovely watch you have.

(Credit: Socratica Studios/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Can you have too much of any one logo?

Even if it’s one you like, admire, and warm to? Even if it’s one that you believe says more about you than you ever could?

How often do you see supposedly fashionable men and women walking down the street decked out entirely in, say, Tory Burch or Gucci?

Don’t they mix it up a little, just to demonstrate their alleged individuality?

The question is important when it comes to wearable tech, the alleged next big thing. It’s also important to the future of the Apple brand.

Last week, Apple hired Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts to oversee the next evocation of its retail offering. Ahrendts is someone who believes in the power of emotion.

She is the second hire from the fashion industry, after the company hired Paul Deneve from YSL to work on “special projects.”

To some extent, this suggests a certainty within Apple that its most powerful advantage still lies in design. Apple’s confidence in its own taste is vast.

But when it comes to wearable tech, the jury isn’t merely out. It hasn… [Read more]

Gallery of Superhero Squirrels is Just Super

Squirrels might be tiny, but they can be huge pests sometimes. However, for people who don’t live in countries where they’re commonly spotted, they’re among the most adorable mammals ever. Although they can be destructive sometimes, they’re also heroes in their own little way. For example, they’re responsible for planting lots of trees in various areas, as they often forget where they buried their acorns.

Depicting them in a totally different light is deviantArt artist Santiago Perez.

His Photoshopped creations don’t just depict squirrels as mere heroes. They’re superheroes, and some of the biggest ones yet. His gallery features the tiny creatures shopped to make them look like they’ve donned the costume of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Batman. In the case of the Hulk, I’d say he decked out the squirrel in the Hulk’s typical non-costume.

Bizarre Regional Laws In the U.S. Are Even Weirder Than You Thought

Every now and then there’s a writeup of some weird U.S. laws, and it’s always interesting to see what random stuff merited legislation at one time or another. But this infographic, put out by the online attorney directory Upcounsel, takes the curation to the next level and also talks about enforcement and shows which weird laws have been or are being repealed. In Ohio it’s illegal to get a fish drunk, in Arizona it’s illegal to cut down a cactus, and in Washington it’s illegal to harass Bigfoot. How would you even go about doing that? All will be revealed. Microsoft Remote Desktop App For Windows Phone Is Being Developed

Microsoft Remote Desktop App For Windows Phone Is Being Developed

Earlier this month Microsoft said that it is going to release a remote desktop app for both iOS and Android. It did indeed, the Microsoft remote desktop app for iOS and Android has been released and is now available for download. The app lets users control their Windows PC through their tablet or smartphone. Many wondered why Microsoft hadn’t released the app for its own mobile platform, Windows Phone. The company has confirmed that it is working on an app for its own platform as well.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to TNW that the company is working on “a version of the app for Windows Phone,” though a release timeframe has not been provided. The spokesperson has said that the timeframe will be shared at a later point in time. The apps for iOS and Android allow users to access remote resources and more through a Remote Desktop Gateway, connect securely to all apps and data on a local machine through Network Layer Authentication technology and manage all remote connections through a connection center. The Windows Phone remote desktop app will presumably have the same functions as well, when it is ultimately released. Hopefully Microsoft will reveal when we can expect the app to drop, soon.

Fitbug Orb offers great value for money for an activity tracker

fitbug-orbThere’s an app for just about everything these days, so when we talk about a device like the Fitbug Orb, it would certainly be quite an interesting topic. While there are dime a dozen of activity trackers that are already available in the market, the Fitbug Orb might stand out from the rest of the crowd in terms of value, wearability and personalized content. It is said to retail for less than half of what the likes of the Jawbone Up, Nike FuelBand SE and Fitbit Flex would cost, and yet offers some pretty decent performance that accompanies it.

We are talking about a $49.95 price tag for the Fitbug Orb, making it the most affordable, feature and service-rich tracker that is available at the moment. Specially designed to expand the health tracking trend without breaking the bank, the Fitbug Orb would be able to advise folks when it comes to achieving their fitness or weight loss goals by merging technology which tracks movement as well as sleep patterns, alongside KiK, a proprietary digital coach which will enable one to set, monitor and where necessary, actually prompt the wearer to act (mostly in a physical manner) to achieve their intended goals.

It will be different from wrist-bound activity trackers, as this discreet button-sized Fitbug Orb can be worn in a variety of ways to suit your existing style or social settings that you are involved in. It does not matter whether it is placed on a belt, wrist, or lanyard, or clipped on or beneath clothing, the Fitbug Orb is small and sophisticated enough to track a wealth of information that range from steps to aerobic steps/time, distance, calories burned, speed and even sleep.

Apart from that, there is also the Bluetooth Smart Orb which will synchronize such information to compatible mobile devices and the KiK digital coach platform. The free Fitbug app will play nice with iOS-powered and select Android-powered handsets, so you know what to do if you are running on Windows Phone or BlackBerry OS!

Surface 2 Went On Sale Early In The UK

Surface 2 Went On Sale Early In The UK

Last month Microsoft unveiled its next generation tablets, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. Both tablets aren’t going to be released to the public until October 22nd, but one major UK based retailer made a slip-up and put Surface 2 up for safe ahead of its official release date. The Surface 2 tablet was listed for sale on the Argos’ website, customers could purchase it online and then pick up their unit from an Argos store. The Type Cover 2 or Touch Cover 2 keyboard covers weren’t put up for sale, only the Surface 2 32GB and 64GB models were offered. The Surface Pro 2 tablet didn’t go on sale prematurely.

Argos has now taken notice of this slip-up and has removed the Surface 2 tablet from its website. So no use in heading over to the retailer’s online store right now to pick up a Surface 2 tablet before everyone else, they’re not available anymore. Argos says that it is working with Microsoft to “investigate this error as a matter of urgency.” It also says that it fully complies with embargos issued by suppliers, this particular incident is definitely unusual and one that’s likely to put a few Argos employees in hot water. As for those who’re waiting for the new Surface tablets, October 22nd isn’t that far off now.

Twitter Music Might Bite The Dust Soon

Twitter Music Might Bite The Dust Soon

Back in April, Twitter launched its #music service. Through the iOS app, users could discover new music via four different ways, #NowPlaying, Suggested, Emerging and Popular. The app would show what sort of music is trending, thus allowing users to discover new and popular tracks. Merely six months down the road, it is being rumored that Twitter is “strongly considering” killing the #music app. The rumor comes from AllThingsD, which cites multiple sources “familiar with the matter.”

Apparently Twitter is currently revamping its music department, and there’s no concrete timeframe available in which the app is going to be killed off, though the decision about it biting the dust has been “nearly sealed.” It is said that after the initial spike following its launch, user engagement and downloads have been “abysmal.” When it was launched, the app noticed a spike in its iTunes Store rankings, it went as high as the 6th slot on the overall free downloads chart, but since then it has slipped down. Various app analytics companies give different rankings for the app, but its no where near the top ten anymore. Rumors of an impending shutdown come just one month after Twitter #music playlists were integrated into Spotify and Rdio, but if this report is true, then its likely that the move wasn’t able to ramp up user engagement, at least to a point where it would have convinced Twitter to not shut #music down.
