iPad Mini 2 Could Outsell Regular iPad 2:1

iPad Mini 2 Could Outsell Regular iPad 2:1We’re sure many are excited for Apple’s event on the 22nd of October where the new iPad 5 and the new iPad mini 2 are expected to be unveiled. While the iPad 5 will be exciting in the sense that it might sport a new look, the iPad mini 2 could be an even bigger hit as the rumors have suggested that the tablet will be getting a Retina display, making it even sharper and crisp. Granted it does boil down to personal preference, but one analyst seems to believe that the iPad mini 2 could have the potential to outsell the iPad 5 by a factor of 2:1, assuming of course Apple is able to meet the demand.

According to Amit Daryanani of RBC Capital Markets, he expects the new iPad mini to account for about 65% of Apple’s overall tablet sales, with the larger iPad accounting for the remaining 35%. There is a caveat in his prediction and that is if only Apple is able to meet the demand for the device. As you might have heard, the iPad mini 2 could be delayed or have its supply constrained, possibly to 2014 as there have been reports that its Retina display is giving manufacturers trouble. However assuming Apple is able to pull it off, then Daryanani expects his prediction of the iPad mini selling 2:1 to the regular iPad to come true. What do you guys think? Will the Retina iPad mini 2 end up outselling the regular iPad?

iPhone 5s Motion Sensor Problem Could Be Hardware Related Afterall

iPhone 5s Motion Sensor Problem Could Be Hardware Related AfterallEarlier this month we reported on some problems many iPhone 5s users were complaining about on their devices, namely the accuracy of their motion sensors which seems to be a bit off, at least compared to other iOS devices. At that time it was unclear if this was a software problem that could be fixed with an update that would recalibrate the sensors, or if it was a more pressing issue like a hardware problem that might either require an exchange of the phone, or maybe even a recall. Well as it turns out, it might be a hardware problem, at least according to RealityCap CEO, Eagle Jones. According to Jones, he notes that this is thanks to the use of new hardware in the iPhone 5s.

Previous Apple had relied on STMicroelectronics to supply their accelerometers, but with the iPhone 5s, Apple had turned to Bosch, whose component has been noted to have a higher bias which makes it consistent with the inaccurate readings that iPhone 5s users are experiencing on their devices. Jones notes that this could have resolved from the start if Apple had calibrated it at the factory, but did not for whatever reason. As it stands RealityCap is working on code for developers that will help address the issue, but naturally a fix by Apple would be a better long-term solution.

New iPads Could Arrive On T-Mobile According To CEO’s Tweet

New iPads Could Arrive On T Mobile According To CEOs TweetCome 22nd of October, Apple will be holding an event in which many believe the new iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 will be announced. We would expect that both tablets could be made available for purchase shortly after its announcement, most likely via Apple’s retail store or online store, but perhaps there is a good chance that T-Mobile might offer up the new iPads as well, thanks to a recent tweet by the carrier’s CEO in which he asked who is excited for the 22nd of October, which is the same day that Apple’s event will be held.

While the 22nd of October reference could be made regarding Nokia’s own press event, the tweet saw a link to an article covering Apple’s event. As it stands, T-Mobile is the only major carrier in the US to not offer an LTE iPad. Just as they were the last to carry the iPhones, they are the last to offer the iPad, but hopefully if this tweet is any indication, T-Mobile subscribers might be able to look forward to getting their hands on Apple’s new iPads along with LTE data plans via the carrier in the near future. Either way we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled, so be sure to check back with us on the 22nd of October for the details.

Startup sends school-shooting alert (it’s marketing ‘fun’)

I am sure the people behind this are so much fun in real life.

    (Credit: Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

The lovely thing about startups is that the minute you create one, you know you’re going to change the world.

Users will flock to you, your fellow men and women will adore you, and, in 20 years’ time, your name will still be uttered with reverence and awe.

This must be the feeling of those behind a startup called Bevii.

As soon I tell you its slogan, you will be slapping your head and wondering why you didn’t think of it: “Social Network. Meet Real Life.”

As if a slave to its own motto, Bevii, run by students on the University of North Carolina campus, decided to launch via a marketing wheeze.

As Valleywag reports, the company sent out an e-mail bulletin to 17,000 students.

Its conceit was that, for all the world, it looked like an emergency alert. This was enhanced by the headline: INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN FROM ALERT CAROLINA.

    So very clever.

The marketing message then proceeded to describe how Chapel Hill police were investigating the fact that “in broad … [Read more]

Bre Pettis, Jeff Clavier, And Matt Rogers Will Join Us At Hardware Battlefield In Vegas

    hardware-battlefield600

With the rise of crowdfunding and easier paths to manufacturing, there are more gadgeteers than ever before. And we’re looking for some of the best hardware startups to compete on our Las Vegas stage for a giant $50,000 check, tons of publicity and the brand new Hardware Battlefield cup.

We are pleased to announce that Makerbot’s Bre Pettis, VC Jeff Clavier, and Nest founder Matt Rogers have all agreed to be judges for the competition. Each one will bring their years of experience to bear on what should be an amazing event.

Like Startup Battlefield, this new competition will pit 20 hardware startups against each other. The winner will be chosen by VCs, makers and TechCrunch Editors.

The best thing? The Hardware Battlefield is taking place at CES 2014 in Las Vegas but is open to all comers and you don’t need a conference badge to enter, attend the battlefield events, or simply spectate. Our goal is to find the diamond in the CE rough. We don’t care about Samsung, Sony, and Philips -– we care about you.

It’s free to enter. The competition is open to all hardware companies who are planning to launch (crowdfund or ship) product in a two week window before or after January 10. You can still be in prototyping stage but you must have a working, usable product by January 7 and be ready to offer pre-orders on that day or soon thereafter. We recommend launching your crowdsourcing page during the event, however, as it will have maximum impact.

We will have more details shortly but for now we invite you to submit your product. The rules are simple:

    1. You must launch your product or crowdfunding campaign before January 7.
    2. You must be a single proprietor or small company.
    3. This must not be a feature update to an existing product.
    4. You must be able to attend rehearsals and sessions in Las Vegas prior to CES and during the show.
    5. You must launch first with TechCrunch and approach other media after you appear on our stage.

We will pick 15 entrants on October 30 and announce the location, time, and judges closer to the event. The grand prize winner will get $50,000 to go towards research, development, or whatever else your team needs to get by. All projects will be kept confidential until January 7.

We are very excited about this new event and we want to make it the best one ever. Remember to email sponsors@techcrunch.com if you’d like to sponsor the festivities and if you have any questions email john@techcrunch.com. We look forward to seeing what you’re working and we hope to see you in Vegas!
