Amazon’s 2014 Smartphone Rumored To Feature 3D Gestures And Eye Tracking

Amazons 2014 Smartphone Rumored To Feature 3D Gestures And Eye TrackingThere have been rumors that Amazon is planning to launch a smartphone of their own come 2014 and according to a recent report by Apple Insider, they claim that their sources have informed them of some of the upcoming features of the phone. This includes advanced 3D gestures and eye-tracking input. This seems to be in line with earlier rumors suggesting that Amazon’s smartphone would utilize 3D in some way. Amazon has been rumored to have partnered with three key compact camera module makers that will help enable these features in their phone.

The phone is said to pack 6 camera modules: 4 VGA cameras placed at the corners of the phone, while the remaining two will be a 13MP rear-facing camera, while the front-facing camera is said to be a 12MP one. Additional information about the device includes a 4.7” touchscreen display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor on board. Assuming that the information is accurate, Amazon’s take on the smartphone would definitely be a unique one and will help differentiate itself from the pack. However given that chances are Amazon will most likely use the same operating system found on their Kindle Fire tablets, that alone would be differentiation enough. Will this 3D gestures and eye tracking prove to be a key selling point, or will be end up being a novelty? What do you guys think?

iTunes Radio Not Exactly Winning Over Pandora Subscribers

iTunes Radio Not Exactly Winning Over Pandora SubscribersWith the release of iTunes Radio, many had expected it to immediately dominate the likes of Pandora thanks to Apple’s already-established ecosystem of music via its iTunes store. However it turns out that perhaps Apple needs to work a little harder if they hope to convince more users to hop aboard the iTunes Radio bandwagon, thanks to a recent survey of about 800 iOS users which found that while many were eager to give iTunes Radio a try, not many stuck around after that. The survey was conducted to find if iOS users were convinced to keep using iTunes Radio, or have gone back to Pandora, or are using both services at the same time.

Based on the survey, 72% of those were running iOS 7. Out of that 72%, 40% claimed to have tried iTunes Radio, and only 8% of those who tried it decided to ditch Pandora in favor of it, whle 44% decided to split their time between services. The reason why many have yet to ditch Pandora in favor of iTunes Radio is apparently because iTunes Radio is not as “smart” as Pandora in the sense that it doesn’t play as many songs that people want to hear compared to the competition. The report by ModMyi concludes that both platforms can actually coexist peacefully and “take tremendous share from broadcast radio.”

NSA Reform Bill Introduced As Agency Remains On The Defensive

WASHINGTON — A major bill to reform the National Security Agency was introduced on Tuesday as the spy service’s director defended its activities before the House Intelligence Committee.

The bipartisan legislation introduced jointly by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) is one of the most ambitious efforts to rein in the NSA’s spying powers in the wake of revelations made by former agency contractor Edward Snowden.

“It is time for serious and meaningful reforms so we can restore confidence in our intelligence community,” Leahy said in a statement. “Modest transparency and oversight provisions are not enough. We need real reform.”

House Approves Retirement Savings Measure That Delays Broker Rules

New federal rules meant to protect retirement savers from unscrupulous financial professionals would be delayed and weakened under a bill passed by the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The bill, approved by a 254-166 vote, is aimed at the Labor Department, where for at least three years a small group of officials led by Phyllis Borzi have been trying to implement a proposal that would force financial advisers and brokers to act in their customers’ best interests when pitching financial products for retirement accounts.

The rules, long sought by consumer advocates, gained greater urgency after the financial crisis wiped away trillions of dollars from Americans’ retirement nest eggs. With an increasing number of Americans now saving for their own retirements, rather than relying on company or government-provided pensions, consumer and investor advocates argue that brokers and others who reap commissions from selling financial products are conflicted when pitching to their customers, leading to bad advice that may jeopardize millions of households.
