Dell Announces Venue 7 And Venue 8 Android Tablets

Dell Announces Venue 7 And Venue 8 Android Tablets

At an event in New York City, Dell today announced two new Android powered tablets called Dell Venue 7 and Dell Venue 8. The company said earlier this year that it would revive the “Venue” brand, no one knew that part of the revival would include two new Android tablets as well. Both tablets are relatively low cost offerings, powered by an Intel Z2580 2GHz dualcore “Clover Trail” processor and only 16GB of onboard storage on the Venue 7. It is said that the Venue 8 will be offered with a 32GB storage option. External memory expansion via microSD cards is possible. The monikers of the tablets actually indicate their display sizes, 7 and 8 inches respectively. Despite the difference in size, both IPS display panels offer 1,280×800 pixel resolution.

Dates with bricks: Lego calendar syncs with Google Calendar

    It's all in the bricks.

    (Credit: Vitamins)

Workers at a design studio in London recently went on a quest to find a better way to organize themselves while in the office. There were a few requirements. It had to be big. It had to cover a few months into the future. It had to work both online and offline. They settled on Legos.

Using Legos, Vitamins built a large, wall-mounted calendar with flat gray pieces as the base, representing the days of the week. Each person has their own line on the calendar, and is represented by a custom minifig character. Different projects are assigned different colors of bricks.

The Lego wall calendar satisfies the studio’s offline needs, but there was still the online component to contend with. So the company created a custom software piece that updates the online calendar when the Lego calendar is updated. So, if you stick a green brick on Friday, it updates with a green block of time online showing which project is under way.

iPad 5 Purported Casing In Space Gray [Video]

Apple is expected to unveil both new iPads on October 15th, but so far the company hasn’t said anything about its tablet plans. Nevertheless, rumors have constantly been coming in. We’ve also seen a plethora of purported parts and components surface online and today we get to see a purported iPad 5 casing in the space gray color that Apple debuted with the iPhone 5s last month. The video compares the casing with that of the existing iPad, design changes are quite evident.

iPad 5 is expected to have a design similar to that of the iPad mini, this has been rumored time and time again. Alleged schematics of the next generation iPad that recently leaked also hinted at this possibility. The casing in this video also bears resemblance to that of its younger sibling. Furthermore, the iPad 5 is expected to be thinner, lighter and have thinner bezels. The Space Gray color is actually the replace for Slate, this casing has a black front bezel. It is interesting to note that the casing in this video does not have the embedded magnets that are used to clip on the Smart Covers, so there’s a possibility that it might be a knock off or an early prototype.

Here's the Second Hidden Piece In Banksy's "Secret" NYC Street Show

Banksy, the mysterious (er, kind of mysterious) British street artist who popularized stencils in the 2000s, is in New York this month to stage a 30-day exhibit that takes place entirely on the streets. His first piece, yesterday, has already been painted over. But we were able to locate today’s feature, which is hidden below the High Line.

Xi3’s Piston will ship with Windows, sans controller (update)

Xi3's Piston won't ship with a controller, will ship with some version of Windows

When the Xi3 Piston modular PC / game console ships this November, it’ll ship like most PCs do: without a gamepad. Sadly, the in-house controller from Piston will be sold separately for a separate, undisclosed price. “There will be a future announcement about our plans for controllers,” was the most that chief marketing officer David Politis would share during a brief interview this morning. We managed to snap the pic you see above before the controller was whisked away; Politis and co. refused any closer snaps, not to mention a opportunity to go hands-on.

The PC-cum-game-console will launch with “some version” of Windows (the console we saw here was running Windows 7), rather than SteamOS. The only look we’ve had at Xi3’s GUI was brief, during SXSW’s gaming expo. And Politis called that brief glimpse “presentation-ware.” He said we’ll see it running “before we officially ship” in video form at the very least, and it’ll run as a Windows-based program on the shipping box. He did speak to how it will work, though. “It’ll be customizable … when [the Piston] is ready to run, you’ll be in our GUI. You won’t be in an OS per se,” Politis told Engadget. “It’s connected to the net, so you should be able to access any type of content you already have ownership of or licensing rights to from inside of the GUI. And you’re gonna be able to do that. You can start thinking through, ‘What do I already own or have license rights to that I can access through the internet?’ These are ticking off the different types of things that you and your readers own or have access to.” When we specifically noted Amazon, Netflix and Hulu, as well as gaming services like Steam and UPlay, Politis confirmed our (obvious) guesses.

Update: Xi3 told us that the custom GUI will ship with the console in November. Please excuse the confusion!

Secret NSA project gathered American cellphone location data

NSA reportedly gathered American cellphone location data

The NSA’s been rather busy over the past few years, tracking everything from your emails to phone calls, and now the New York Times is reporting that it even conducted a secret project to collect data about the location of American’s cellphones in 2010 and 2011. The project was ultimately not implemented and only recently surfaced in a pre-written answer for the director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper, should the subject come up in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. According to the Times, details about the project are scarce, and Senator Ron Wyden said that “the real story” behind the project has yet to be declassified. The answer obtained by the paper reads:

“In 2010 and 2011 N.S.A. received samples in order to test the ability of its systems to handle the data format, but that data was not used for any other purpose and was never available for intelligence analysis purposes.”

‘Revenge Porn’ Has Been Banned In California

Revenge Porn Has Been Banned In California

We reported back in August that the California State Assembly was debating on a bill that aimed to classify “revenge porn” as a criminal misdemeanor. There are a plethora of revenge porn websites on the internet which host content provided by vindictive ex-lovers. Today, California governor Jerry Brown has signed the bill into law. Revenge porn distributors may now face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. With the passage of this bill, California has become the second state in the U.S. to ban the act of putting intimate content of an ex on the internet in a bid to humiliate them. The first is New Jersey, which classifies revenge porn as a felony.

The bill, SB 255, only covers the photos or videos that are taken by the offender, not that are sent to them. So a victim will essentially have no legal recourse under this law if they themselves had sent the compromising content. Still, it provides victims with a legal framework that was previously absent. Videos and pictures that show a person in the state of “partial undress in any area in which the person being photographed or recorded has a reasonable expectation of privacy,” classify as revenge porn under SB 255.
