Steny Hoyer Rails Against House Republicans: ‘This Is A Game’

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took a shot at House Republicans on Tuesday evening, criticizing them for playing games and blaming them for the government shutdown.

“They shut down the government. They think that gives them leverage to accomplish what they couldn’t accomplish in the election, and it’s harmful to the American people,” Hoyer said in a CNN interview.

Hoyer criticized House Republicans for framing their actions — like foregoing salaries — as “politically salient” to divert attention from the harm they’ve caused.

DeLorean DMC-12 Gets A Li-Ion Battery

DeLorean DMC 12 Gets A Li Ion Battery[CEATEC 2013] It is not every day that you see a DeLorean DMC-12, but on the CEATEC showfloor this year, this is exactly what we saw. This particular ride will not be able to help you perform some time travel shenanigans, and neither is it going to accelerate to 88 miles per hour (141.6 km/h) in order to activate the flux capacitor simply because there is none to begin with. In the original Back to the Future trilogy, it was mentioned that time travel required that exact speed, in addition to an enormous amount of power. Just how much? Well, the three films had consistently mentioned “one point twenty-one jiggawatts”, which actually matches the standard prefix and the term for power of “one billion watts”:, that is, a gigawatt. That is never going to happen with the DeLorean on the showfloor, as it showcases a li-ion battery that offers 150V of performance.

Whilst time travel is still out of reach, at least it shows that one is able to retrofit an existing ride with a battery to turn it into an electric vehicle. Of course, it remains to be seen just how much money such a conversion will cost to transform a gasoline-powered ride into a fully electric one, but hopefully it will be affordable enough so that even those living in poorer countries are able to make the switch for a greener future.

Ugh, Samsung Rigged the Note 3 to Perform Better in Benchmark Tests

Apple hires former CableLabs exec, sets TV rumor alert level to mauve

Until Apple actually produces a new TV related device, rumors about what it might be working on will continue to flow, with no end in sight. While we still don’t know what’s next out of Cupertino, Multichannel News reports the company has hired a former CableLabs executive for the job of engineering director. Jean-François Mulé served as senior VP of technology development at CableLabs for the last two years, and MCN indicates that before that he worked on a number of IP-based projects like DOCSIS 3.0 and second screen technology. It’s still hard to say what Apple may want to build for the living room, but apparently this is the kind of person needed to fill out that “vision of the future,” especially if that means working with existing cable and satellite TV services.

    It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! No, It’s HondaDog!

It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! No, It’s HondaDog![CEATEC 2013] Yumemi and Honda have teamed up to deliver a new driving app that they call HondaDog. You know how detailed and intricate the Japanese can be, right? Well, most of the smaller stuff tend to end up looking cute, and the HondaDog app is one of them. The entire idea of the HondaDog is to deliver a traveling companion avatar which exists on your smartphone, just like an actual dog except that you do not have to vacuum your vehicle from time to time to rid it of fur, and neither do you need to take into consideration the need to take toilet breaks – since a virtual pet dog avatar does not shed, and neither does it have bodily functions that need relieving of.

The HondaDog is also a sociable character, pretty much in the same vein as that of an actual dog. This pet avatar will be able to be introduced to other HondaDogs whenever you meet different people with the same HondaDog app on their respective mobile devices. Other than that, you can also “send” your HondaDog on an information errand, so to speak, for it to pick up details to a particular region which you intend to visit, and it will bring that right back to you. Sorta like fetching the morning paper, except that this does it in a cute manner with information that you need and want, nothing else. Seems like an app worth checking out if just for its cuteness, and I do wonder whether stuff like this will catch on in other countries or not.

Apple Issues Battery Fix For MacBook Pro And MacBook Air

Apple Issues Battery Fix For MacBook Pro And MacBook AirIf you own a 2012 13” or 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display, or a 2012/2013 MacBook Air, you might be interested to learn that Apple has issued a software update for the devices mentioned above. The update will apparently address a rare issue that occurs with the batteries of the laptops. GIven that this is a rare issue, it might explain why it was not as widespread a problem as we would have thought.

According to the update, “This update is recommended for MacBook Air (mid 2012 and mid 2013) models. This update addresses rare issues where the battery unexpectedly stops functioning, the system does not recognize the battery, or the system hangs when the battery charge reaches less than one percent.” If you own any of the devices mentioned above and have experienced this rare battery issue, then this update is for you, so you might want to check your software updates to see if it is available for download for your device.

Volkswagen Demonstrates MARTA AR App To Help With Repairs

Given how complex cars are, repairing one is not exactly an easy task and with every new model that is released, mechanics will have to familiarize themselves with the newer models and technology that is being used if they hope to do a good job of repairing it, but what if that job could have been made a lot easier? Well Volkswagen is hoping to do something about that and has since unveiled an iOS augmented reality app called MARTA, which is short for Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance. Basically this app has been designed specifically for the Volkswagen XL1 concept car and what it does is that it walks technicians through the repair or service.

The app will be able to let technicians know the sort of jobs that can be performed on the vehicle, as well as what are the types of tools needed in order to accomplish them. The goal is to allow those working on the vehicle a faster way of identifying things that need to be worked on quickly and more accurately, meaning that mechanics who work on the car have no excuse to gloss over an identified problem area as it will be pointed out by the app itself. It sounds pretty cool although we’re not sure if this can be applied to all vehicles in the future, but in the meantime you can check out the app in action in the video above to get a better idea.

    BlackBerry Responds To Gartner Analysis

BlackBerry Responds To Gartner AnalysisJust the other day it was reported that analyst firm, Gartner, had suggested to their enterprise clients that they should start finding alternatives to using BlackBerry products and gave them a six month window to do in the event that BlackBerry really does close its doors (which we doubt will be as drastic as Gartner makes it out to be). In any case this does not make BlackBerry sound very good or relay a sense of confidence to BlackBerry’s investors and future customers, and BlackBerry has since responded with a statement of their own (via CIO), addressing the analysis that Gartner has provided to its customers.

According to the statement made by BlackBerry, they believe that Gartner’s analysis is “purely speculative”, and that they remain committed to “deliver the most secure and powerful mobile management solutions and smartphones to our customers.” BlackBerry also boasts that they are the only Enterprise Mobile Management platform to have been awarded the “Authority to Operate” on the US Department of Defense Networks. Essentially BlackBerry is trying to reassure their customers that they are not going anywhere, but what do you guys think? Should enterprise users really start looking for alternatives? Or do you think BlackBerry will remain the choice of enterprise users in the foreseeable future?

Bill Gates Reportedly Asked To Step Down As Microsoft’s Chairman

Bill Gates Reportedly Asked To Step Down As Microsofts ChairmanIt wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, gave his farewell speech to Microsoft employees as he enters into his retirement which will be taking place over the course of the next 12 months, and now it seems that some of the top investors in Microsoft are now lobbying the board of directors to get Bill Gates, Microsoft’s co-founder, to step down from his position as chairman of the board. Apparently this is a request put forward to the board of directors by 3 of the top 20 investors in the company who collectively hold more than 5% of the company’s stock. (more…)

Logitech’s UE Mini Boom Portable Speakers Unveiled

Logitechs UE Mini Boom Portable Speakers UnveiledPortable speakers don’t necessarily provide the best audio if you’re looking for an audiophile listening experience, but then again its portability is its selling point, although Logitech seems to have found a pretty decent balance with its Ultimate Ears lineup. If you’re in the market for new portable speakers with decent audio, Logitech has announced an upgrade to their UE Mobile Boombox in the form of the UE Mini Boom. It is essentially a smaller version of the Boombox but at the same time has been designed to withstand a certain amount of abuse, thanks to its metal frame and rubber housing, which would make it an ideal traveling companion to outdoor locations where it might be accidentally dropped or bumped around during transit.

The UE Mini Boom will pair with devices via Bluetooth with a range of up to 50 feet, and the ability to pair with multiple devices simultaneously through its companion app which will be compatible with iOS and Android devices. According to Logitech, they claim that the UE Mini Boom will be able to last up to 10 hours on a single charge, and will also sport NFC connectivity for devices that support it. The speakers are expected to be made available for purchase later this month for a price of $100.
