BlackBerry Reportedly Courting Facebook For A Buyout Bid

BlackBerry Reportedly Courting Facebook For A Buyout Bid

BlackBerry has until the first week of November to try and find another buyer before Fairfax Financial Holdings comes back with its final offer. Both parties have currently signed a letter of intent, which puts the buyout bid at $4.7 billion. There have been rumors of a number of other companies looking at BlackBerry’s books, companies such as Lenovo, Intel, Google and more, but no other bids have been received as yet. The Wall Street Journal reports today that BlackBerry executives flew to California to meet with Facebook, in an effort to secure a potential bid from the world’s largest social network.

It is not entirely clear if Facebook is interested in buying out BlackBerry, spokesmen for both companies have declined to comment on this report. Facebook has long been rumored to be interested in making a “Facebook Phone,” it even reportedly tried to reach some sort of an arrangement with Samsung, but nothing of this sort has materialized as yet. Could Facebook finally jump into the hardware game by acquiring the ailing Canadian manufacturer? Its too soon to say right now, though it doesn’t come as a surprise to see BlackBerry try and find new potential suitors, as analysts fear Fairfax might come back with a reduced bid if it sees that its the only buyer BlackBerry has.

Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 Tablet May Have Quadcore Processor, 3GB RAM

Samsung Galaxy Note 12.2 Tablet May Have Quadcore Processor, 3GB RAM

Back in June we reported that Samsung was interested in developing a 12 inch tablet. Since then, the Galaxy Note 12.2 has been rumored a few times, but it still hasn’t been confirmed as yet. We’ve seen a render of it being leaked, but it can’t be said for sure if its the real deal. Information about the tablet’s specifications is scarce, though the latest from AnTuTu claims that the tablet might have a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quadcore processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. This would definitely make for quite a powerful package.

The report also claims that the tablet has a 8 megapixel rear and a 2 megapixel front camera, and that it runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It is said to have 32GB of onboard storage, and there’s the possibility that it might also have a microSD card slot. This is the first time that Galaxy Note 12.2 has turned up at AnTuTu, we’ve previously seen it turn up at Bluetooth SIG, but that’s just about it. We’ve yet to see any renders or spy shots of the tablet being leaked. Samsung hasn’t said if it has such a tablet up its sleeve, and its not known right now exactly when Samsung might release the Galaxy Note 12.2.

David Hockney’s iPad drawings go big, 12 feet big

There are iPad drawings you look at on a screen, and there are iPad drawings printed on sheets of 3×6-foot paper and mounted on a giant wall. One might call the latter a David Hockney-style iPad drawing.

Hang five such works together and you have “Bigger Yosemite,” a series of wonderfully vibrant drawings of Yosemite’s rocks, trees, and waterfalls that each measures 9 feet wide by 12 feet high. The piece now hangs in San Francisco’s De Young Museum as part of “David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition,” a comprehensive survey of more than 300 works made since 2002 by the influential British painter, stage designer, and photographer.

The exhibit, which runs through January 20 across two floors, highlights Hockney’s ability to engage with, and master, a wide variety of tools and media. It includes watercolors, charcoals, simple pencil drawings, and oil paintings, but also encompasses 17 works made on an iPad and then printed out on paper, and 147 other iPad and iPhone drawings that rotate on seven LED displays.

Air Rope Inflatable Tunnel: An Alternative Way to Get out of Sticky Situations

There are a lot of emergency situations that call for the use of rope. Unfortunately, rope pulley systems aren’t the safest way to go sometimes due to external conditions. Like, say, when there are floods or overflowing rivers and people are trapped on one end. No doubt you’ve seen similar scenarios in movies where the hero clings to the rope and pulls himself to safety on the other side. But regular folks might lose their grip and be swept away by the current.

As an alternative to this, the Air Rope came to be.

It’s essentially an inflatable tunnel that functions as a rope in the sense that it will help you get across certain obstacles without relying so much on your arms. Emergency response people could set up and inflate the tunnel within minutes and have people cross the river by crawling through it instead of using the rope system.

Air Rope is a rescue system that takes the form of an inflated tunnel. It can be used as a thoroughfare across a river when secured to the ground and a tree at each end. A motor and propeller create a powerful flow of air. The air nozzle has a screw-in profile to prevent air leakage. Aluminium alloy, which is light and strong, is used for the metal components.

Google Hangouts SMS Support Is Finally Here

Google Hangouts SMS Support Is Finally Here

Google Hangouts SMS support on Android is no longer a dream. Vic Gundotra announced a number of improvements that have been made to Hangouts, today. Improvements include support for SMS, location sharing and animated GIFs. It was previously rumored that support for SMS messages in Hangouts will come with Android 4.4 KitKat, but evidently Google doesn’t want us to keep waiting. Unfortunately, Google Voice still hasn’t been integrated in the Android app. Nevertheless, users will no longer need to use the stock SMS app, texts will go through Hangouts exactly the way they do through the stock app. Location can be shared through just one touch of a button that’s placed beside the one used to share photos.

Google has also made some improvements to Hangouts apart from its mobile app. Auto enhance has been added to video calls, the feature automatically adjusts contrast and brightness levels to provide clear video. Moreover, all video calls made through Hangouts will be in HD, regardless of the mobile or desktop device being used. Hangouts on Air receives a couple of updates as well. Once a broadcast is scheduled, a dedicated landing page is created that is integrated with Google+ events, and it lists RSVPs and even includes a countdown timer. Pre-show Q&A sessions and trailers can even be run. Some changes have been made to the user interface as well, which now lets hosts adjust audio or even kick people from the session. The updated Google Hangouts app will be rolled out over the next few days, whereas updates to Hangouts on Air will take several weeks to go live.

The Cold Steel Shark Tactical Marker means business

    cold_steel_shark_tactical_marker_hammer
It seems silly to spend much money on a writing utensil, because we don’t place much emphasis on handwritten notes anymore. However, that doesn’t mean we don’t need to jot something down to remember what we need from the store. During these times, it is absolutely infuriating if you can’t find a working pen. Should you have a pencil handy, you’re all set to go as long as you have a pencil sharpener if the lead breaks.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you only had to buy one of something, and it wouldn’t break? If you’re a fan of fine, felt tip markers, then you’re going to love the Cold Steel Shark Tactical Marker. This is one writing implement that means serious business. It’s 6.5” long, and is 0.875” in diameter. While the clip might break off, the rest of it is basically indestructible.

Why might you want a marker that can’t be run over by a car and ruined or smashed by a hammer you ask? Well, I can’t honestly answer that. Paying around $8 for one writing tool seems a bit much, but as a lover of this kind of marker, I’ve spent that on Sharpie versions that I wish would’ve lasted longer. The cap screws on so you will have a much harder time of losing the top as it can’t simply be knocked off. There’s no mention of them being waterproof, so try not to leave them in your pants pocket.
