Apple Now Allowing Walk-In Retina iPad Mini Purchases

Apple Now Allowing Walk In Retina iPad Mini PurchasesThe Retina iPad mini is no doubt one of Apple’s more popular iPads, especially given that its crams a rather high resolution into a smaller display, giving it a pretty high pixel density that results in sharper images. Last we heard the tablet was facing backorders and was reportedly also facing supply constraints, apparently due to issues with the display. Whatever the case is, customers were not allowed to just walk into an Apple store to purchase the device, unless they had pre-ordered it online first.

Well the good news is that if you were thinking about getting a tablet, Apple has revealed that you are now able to walk into an Apple store and just purchase the device outright without having to pre-order it via Apple’s website first. The reason behind the previous restrictions was apparently due to supply concerns and worry that they might not be able to meet demand. While Apple’s online store states 5-10 day shipping estimates for WiFi models, an increase from 3-5 days, the loosening of these restrictions for walk-in customers would suggest that perhaps Apple has a handle on things, or are at least confident they have enough stock. However just to be safe, it would be advisable that customers check online for Personal Pickup options to avoid disappointment.

Foxconn To Invest $40 Million In A Factory In Pennsylvania

Foxconn To Invest $40 Million In A Factory In PennsylvaniaIf you’re the type of consumer that worries about where their products come from and whether it is made under ethical conditions, such as no mistreatment of their workers, you might be interested to learn that manufacturer Foxconn will soon be opening up shop in the US. The company has revealed that they are looking to invest $40 million in a new factory in Pennsylvania, with $30 million going towards the factory itself, while the remaining $10 million will go towards R&D efforts at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University.

Foxconn manufactures for a lot of big companies, such as Apple and Sony, just to name a few. We’re not sure if Apple’s products will be transferred to Foxconn’s new factory in the US, but it seems that Foxconn is hopping aboard the bandwagon where a lot of companies are starting to shift their manufacturing efforts back to the US. We have seen how Apple will be bringing advanced sapphire manufacturing to the US, and will also see the new Mac Pro assembled in the US, as opposed to countries such as China or Brazil. Motorola has also shifted their efforts back to the US with the Moto X.

Foxconn has been under fire many times for alleged mistreatment of their workers, but hopefully with the shift to the US, where labor laws are stricter, they will be able to prove that they are able to operate under “normal” conditions as well.

Lytro Manages To Raise $40 Million In Funding Towards New Products

Lytro Manages To Raise $40 Million In Funding Towards New ProductsBack in 2011, the Lytro camera was introduced. The camera was unique not just in terms of its design, but its functionality as well. It did not look like your typical camera but what made it pretty interesting was how photographers could capture images without having to worry about focus because the focusing could be added post-shooting through Lytro’s software. This allowed photographers to capture their photos in the moment without having to worry about whether or not their subject is in focus, or if there might be another object to focus on. As it stands the Lytro camera is pretty much the company’s only product, but the good news is that if you loved the innovativeness that came with the Lytro, you might be interested to learn that the company has recently managed to raise $40 million in funding to help develop additional products.

According to the press release, Jason Rosenthal, CEO of Lytro, was quoted as saying, “The opportunity to build a new set of creative tools for 21st-century storytelling is monumental and we’re excited to embark on the next phase of our journey […] This additional funding will help fuel Lytro’s continued growth and the expansion of Light Field photography with new products and audiences.” It is unclear as to what sort of new products we might be looking at, but given the Lytro was pretty unique, we can’t wait to see what else the company has in store for us.

Crack-Smoking Mayor Rob Ford More Popular Than Obama, Congress

He’s admitted to smoking crack cocaine and buying illegal drugs; he’s been videotaped threatening to kill someone, and he’s been stripped of most of his authority. But despite all that, Toronto’s embattled mayor Rob Ford is still more popular among his constituents than American leaders are among theirs.

According to a new Forum Research survey of 1,049 Toronto voters, Ford, who admitted to using crack in a “drunken stupor” on Nov. 5, has an approval rating of 42 percent. The Telegraph notes that though this is “a two point drop from two weeks ago, it is up from the 39 [percent] approval rating he had before he admitted smoking crack cocaine.”

In contrast, President Barack Obama’s approval rating has fallen to an all-time low this week. According to a CBS poll released Wednesday, only 37 percent of Americans approve of the job the president’s doing in the White House — a nine-point drop since October.

Waving goodbye to Winamp, paying respects to Nullsoft

A "Tron" Winamp skin. Fans often often created skins for their favorite movies, TV shows, or bands.

If you downloaded a song in the late 1990s and early 2000s, you most likely did it with Winamp. This week, the world said goodbye to the legendary media player with plenty of nostalgia, but for me, Winamp’s death means the end of a very personal era. Here are some of my memories of working at Nullsoft, the company that created it.

When I first started there in 2001, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. America Online had just bought the company, and Nullsoft employees weren’t thrilled with the prospect of being told what to do by a large company with a lot of rules. Many of us were young and full of “piss off” energy.

Nullsoft’s story started way before I arrived. In 1996, Winamp — short for “Windows Amplifier” — was created and released by computer programmer Justin Frankel. He went on to start his company Nullsoft (a parody of Microsoft’s name) a year later.

Nullsoft’s snarky attitude was obvious from the start with its mascot — a llama named Mike who came with his own tagline: “Winamp, it really whips the llama’s ass!” (a line inspired by the schizophrenic singer-songwriter Wesley Willis). … [Read more]

Tom Hayden Recalls Meeting With JFK As A Student Leader, Proposing Peace Corps (VIDEO)

It’s not everyday that a group of student activists are able to influence the policies of the President of the United States. But without a meeting between student leaders and President John F. Kennedy in Ann Arbor, Michigan in October of 1960, the creation of the Peace Corps, one of Kennedy’s signature achievements, may never have happened.

In discussing the legacy of JFK on the 50th anniversary of his assassination, Tom Hayden warmly remembered meeting JFK as a student leader of the anti-war and civil rights movements. Hayden told HuffPost Live how empowering it was for him and his fellow student leaders to deliver a proposal to Kennedy and witness Kennedy carry it out in the creation of the Peace Corps.

“I remember the night. I’d drafted the letter and it was signed by a dozen student leaders,” Hayden recalled. “Kennedy looked at the letter and said ‘I’m gonna speak to some of this tonight’ and then went out and proposed the Peace Corps.”

Cancer Had Best Be Terrified Of These Adorable Monster Drawings

Max Rice draws monsters that attack cancer.

The 4-year-old Edmonton boy’s works are being sold by his mother to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada and a 3-year-old friend with leukemia.

We don’t always like to see SCARY art, do we?” Max’s mom, Julie Rohr, wrote on a site that sells the works. “Some of these monsters look downright angry. But that’s how we FEEL when we hear about this monster, cancer, attacking our friends and neighbours and family members. So maybe it’s okay to see something ANGRY once in a while to remind us to stand behind these people in support as they fight their battles with cancer.”
