The Very Best Apple Black Friday Deals In The U.S.

Black Friday is one of the few — if only — days of the year when Apple acts like a normal retailer. So as in years past, the electronics maker is offering one-day deals to kick off the holiday shopping season.

But instead of price cuts on iPads and MacBooks, as Apple has done on Black Fridays of yore, it took a different tact in the U.S. this year. Apple is including Apple Store Gift Cards valued between $25 and $150 with the full-priced purchase of various products. You can see all the deals on the company’s website, but we’ve listed out the very best Apple Black Friday deals below.

Some things, though, haven’t changed. As was the case in 2012 and in 2011, Apple is offering absolutely no deals on its best-selling product: the iPhone.

Americans Don’t Really Care About Typhoon Haiyan, Study Says

It was one of the strongest storms in world history, but even so, Americans aren’t that interested in Typhoon Haiyan, a new study shows.

After surveying 1,013 adults a week after the storm hit, the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that Americans’ engagement with the news and in donating to the relief effort is trailing behind other recent natural disasters.

According to the poll, 14 percent of Americans said they’ve made a donation to charities working in the Philippines and 17 percent said they plan on doing so. In the same period after the massive earthquake hit Haiti, 18 percent of Americans said they contributed and 30 percent said they planned on donating.

Missouri Gas Pipeline Explodes Near Hughesville, No Injuries Reported

Nov 29 (Reuters) – A 30-inch (75-cm) natural gas pipeline ruptured and exploded in Missouri just before midnight on Thursday, with no injuries or fatalities reported and no impact to customers shipping gas on the line, a spokeswoman for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co said on Friday.

The release of natural gas occurred at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Thursday (0555 GMT) just north of the rural community of Hughesville, Missouri, forcing the evacuation of some area families as a precaution, the spokeswoman said.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation. Gas supplies have been rerouted to avoid delivery disruptions to customers.

New York Mercantile Exchange natural gas futures prices reached a five-month high of $3.939 per million British thermal units early Friday and were last trading 2.2 cents higher at $3.917 at 9:30 a.m. EST.

Initial media reports said the explosion happened overnight.

Witnesses said flames from the fire about 75 miles (120 km) southeast of Kansas City could be seen from miles (km) away, according to local media reports.

Panhandle Eastern operates a 6,500-mile (10,500-km) natural gas pipeline system that supplies East Coast and Midwest markets with up to 2.8 billion cubic feet of gas per day, according to the company’s website.

The Panhandle Eastern line supplies some of the largest industrial users and power plants in the Midwest with natural gas, the website said.

Panhandle is a subsidiary of Southern Union Co., which is owned by Energy Transfer Partners.

A closer look at the Jolla phone: good intentions, bad delivery (video)

SONY DSC

Jolla’s self-titled and first smartphone launched in partnership with Finnish carrier DNA this week, with a few hundred handsets finding their way to early pre-orderers. Today, a couple of familiar faces from the company stopped off in London to let us play with the final hardware and get to grips with Jolla’s Sailfish OS, which is based somewhat on Nokia’s old MeeGo platform. If you caught our tour of the Jolla prototype earlier this year then you’ve got a good idea of what the handset looks like. In fact, the only differences we can see aesthetically are slightly smaller bezels above and below the screen, and that the rear camera has moved from right flank to center stage. Internally, the core specs are: A 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8930), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage space (expandable), a 4.5-inch, 960×540 (qHD) IPS LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel shooter on the front. We only had a few hours to probe Jolla’s first device, but head past the break for our initial impressions.%Gallery-slideshow124244%
