A closer look at the Jolla phone: good intentions, bad delivery (video)

SONY DSC

Jolla’s self-titled and first smartphone launched in partnership with Finnish carrier DNA this week, with a few hundred handsets finding their way to early pre-orderers. Today, a couple of familiar faces from the company stopped off in London to let us play with the final hardware and get to grips with Jolla’s Sailfish OS, which is based somewhat on Nokia’s old MeeGo platform. If you caught our tour of the Jolla prototype earlier this year then you’ve got a good idea of what the handset looks like. In fact, the only differences we can see aesthetically are slightly smaller bezels above and below the screen, and that the rear camera has moved from right flank to center stage. Internally, the core specs are: A 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8930), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage space (expandable), a 4.5-inch, 960×540 (qHD) IPS LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel shooter on the front. We only had a few hours to probe Jolla’s first device, but head past the break for our initial impressions.%Gallery-slideshow124244%

Google Glass Wearer Evicted From Seattle Eatery

Google Glass Wearer Evicted From Seattle EateryWith a device like Google Glass, you can be sure that it would not stray too far away from controversy. After all, privacy issues would surely be raised from time to time, and the latest person to have been evicted from a public area because he or she is wearing a pair of Google Glass would be Nick Starr. Starr was wearing a pair of Google Glass at the Lost Lake Café & Lounge, when the request was made by the establishment to remove the Google Glass – a request that Starr denied to follow, which promptly saw him being asked to leave the premises.

Starr no doubt wasn’t too happy with the management’s policy of banning Google Glass which could not be presented at that point in time, although right now, customers to Lost Lake Café & Lounge have already been asked to ‘refrain from wearing and operating’ Google Glass whenever they are inside. According to staff at the eatery, this creed had its point, since other customers’ privacy could be invaded by a Google Glass wearer. This is not the first time that an establishment has outlawed the use of Google Glass within, and I am quite sure that it will not be the last, either.

Interlocking Ring Set Shows That You Both Truly Belong Together

Interlocking Ring Set Shows That You Both Truly Belong TogetherDon’t you just love weddings? The songs, the people, food, and of course, the beautiful bride and groom who are really the stars for the day. It is two become one from that auspicious day forth, as both of them share the same family name, not to mention bank account (although some couples do take a different approach). Most weddings would also see the ceremony which features an exchange of rings to signify their unending and unbroken love for one another, and with the $150 Interlocking Ring Set, it would be the ideal rings for Lego lovers.

Why do I say so? Well, the Interlocking Ring Set is obviously inspired by Lego, and it would make for quite the gift for those who want something special this coming holidays. Specially created by Etsy user Shannon Conrad, these are hand-crafted rings which have been made from 100% recycled and locally sourced sterling silver. These are hand cast, and one Lego brick is sacrificed each time a ring is created, since the original brick would be destroyed. Pretty cool stuff, really. I can imagine placing one of those Lego figurines on top of the ring as a topper of sorts that will really deliver quite a comical effect.

Hoda, Kathie Lee Freaked Out By Live Turkey (VIDEO)

Hoda and Kathie Lee hosted a domestic turkey on “Today” on Thanksgiving, and it was pretty amazing.

The turkey made an appearance for a segment about animals, and Hoda eyed it warily as its handler explained how the turkey population has made a healthy resurgence in recent years.

The segment was going fine, until it was time for the turkey to go and the turkey was all like, “Make me, foolish humans.” Hoda and Kathie Lee’s reaction was priceless.

3D Scanner Technology Does Not Need Much Light At All To Create Clear Images

3D Scanner Technology Does Not Need Much Light At All To Create Clear ImagesThe world of 3D has made quite a fair number of leaps and bounds in the past few years, where we now even have 3D movies that are being shown regularly, 3D printers for the home so that you can come up with some of your zanier creations, and here we are with word of an experimental 3D scanner that hails from MIT researchers which is touted to be able to create clear images of poorly lit objects with the clever use of single photons . Of course, all of it will be in 3D, no doubt about it.

This new technique will not rely on any kind of hardware that would not look out of place in the 22nd century, but rather, the MIT team had been working using a standard photon detector which will fire low-intensity visible laser light pulses at the targeted subjects. When that happens, specially developed algorithms would be able to detect any kind of variations in the time which it requires for individual photons to echo, or ping back. Once the software has done the hard work of separating noise as seen above, you would end up with a high resolution image which has been created using approximately a million photons.
