ASUS Transformer Book T100 review: a Windows tablet with netbook roots

New iPhones Continue To Dominate Japan’s Smartphone Market

New iPhones Continue To Dominate Japans Smartphone Market

We have already reported multiple times on Apple’s increasing dominance in Japan. The Land of the Rising Sun is actually Apple’s fastest growing market, with the company’s margins there being 15 percent higher than anywhere else in the world. It is also one of five regions where Apple’s operating profit grew in the last fiscal year. iPhones account for over 37 percent and the iPads over 50 percent of the smartphone and tablet market in Japan, respectively. Japan’s BCN released its weekly sales rankings and nine out of the top ten smartphone sales spots have been taken by the new iPhones, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c to be precise.

We recently reported that 76 percent of all smartphones sold in Japan this October were accounted for by the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The weekly sales rankings reveal that the momentum is still there. Softbank’s 32GB iPhone 5s holds the top spot on the list, followed by NTT DoCoMo’s 32GB model of the same iPhone. Softbank’s 16GB iPhone 5c model comes in at fifth. The tenth spot isn’t taken by any Android manufacturer like Samsung, LG, HTC etc which make some of the most popular Android devices out there. The tenth spot is actually taken by a low end device from Chinese manufacturer ZTE. This goes to show just how popular the new iPhones are in Japan.

Buy Moto G From Amazon Now For $179

A few weeks back Motorola announced the Moto G smartphone, its mid-range Android device that was initially released in Brazil and the UK. The company initially said that the device would be released in the U.S. early next year, however it changed its mind and announced on November 26th that Moto G was available for purchase in the U.S. directly from Motorola itself. Those who prefer purchasing from Amazon can now rejoice as the retailer has finally listed the Moto G for $179 and $199 for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively.

Amazon is currently accepting pre-orders for the Moto G. It says on the product page of the device that Amazon will begin shipping the Moto G on December 4th. It should be kept in mind though that a CDMA version of the Moto G is yet to be released, Motorola says that we can expect it to drop sometime next year, possibly around January. The Moto G is an affordably priced Android smartphone that has a 4.5 inch 720p HD TFT display, a 1.2GHz quadcore processor, as well as a 5 megapixel rear camera. Since the smartphone is sold SIM-free, customers won’t have the opt for a two year contract with a carrier and the device’s bootloader will also be unlocked, so tinkering with its software is not going to be a titanic task.

Nokia Lumia 2520 Sleep Mode Bug Haunts Users

Nokia Lumia 2520 Sleep Mode Bug Haunts Users

Nokia announced its first Windows RT tablet, the Lumia 2520, in October. The tablet was recently released and some customers have complained about a sleep mode bug that causes the tablet to become inoperable until the user performs a hard reset. The issue is reportedly being faced by both AT&T and Verizon variants of the device, and quite a lot of users have complained about the exact same issue in Nokia’s official discussions forums.

Users who left comments on the forum speculate that the bug might be related to the display drivers, however Nokia is yet to issue a statement regarding the bug. So its not clear as of now if the Finnish manufacturer is working on a fix. No temporary fix has been figured out by users, the issue doesn’t go away until the tablet is reset. Until then the Lumia 2520′s screen goes blank and does not respond to taps or even presses of the home button. The screen comes back when the tablet is reset by holding both power and Windows button for a few seconds or just holding down the power button for up to ten seconds. Have you noticed similar behaviour on your Nokia Lumia 2520? Do drop a comment and let us know if you have.

ASUS And Toshiba Expected To Launch Intel Haswell Powered Chromebooks In 2014

ASUS And Toshiba Expected To Launch Intel Haswell Powered Chromebooks In 2014

Intel’s Haswell processors promise better performance and improved battery life, and results have been evident in all of the products that carry these processors. Acer and HP opted to use the Haswell processors in their Chromebooks which were unveiled earlier this year. If the latest from Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes is to be believed, both ASUS and Toshiba might go down the same road next year. Both manufacturers are expected to launch their own Intel Haswell powered Chromebooks in 2014.

According to sources cited in the report, prices of ASUS’s Chromebooks might range between $199 and $329. The first wave will include 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch models. A concrete release date is not known, but sources expect the release might happen in the first half of 2014. Toshiba too is rumored to unveil its Haswell Chromebooks next year, though the company is said to outsource production to Inventec. No expected price point or release time frame is available for Toshiba’s Chrome OS powered notebooks, it is not even known what display size the Japanese manufacturer is going to opt. At this point in time, shipment of Chromebooks account for under 5 percent of all notebook shipments, the addition of two new manufacturers and their products is likely to improve the figure.

Developer Edition And U.S. Unlocked HTC One Receives Android 4.4 Update

Developer Edition And U.S. Unlocked HTC One Receives Android 4.4 Update

The HTC One smartphone is available from all four major U.S. carriers, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint to be precise. Customers who bought their units from these carriers are currently waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat update to drop, given the fact that KitKat is the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system. While HTC is yet to say when carrier branded units are going to receive the update, the manufacturer revealed via Twitter that Android 4.4 has been released for U.S. unlocked as well as the developer edition variants of HTC One.

It didn’t say what changes the update brings to Sense UI. It can be presumed that only necessary changes have been made to Sense UI to ensure its compatibility with Android 4.4, this presumption can be made keeping in mind the fact that the update has been released quite quickly and major changes usually take months to be made before they’re finally rolled out. HTC joins Motorola in ensuring a quick release of KitKat for at least some of its devices, Motorola rolled out the update for Moto X even before it reached Google Play Edition variants of the HTC One and Galaxy S4. HTC is rolling out the update in stages for the U.S. unlocked and developer edition variants, so if you own one, don’t worry if the update notification doesn’t immediately pop up.

Instagram Saw Its Busiest Day Ever This Thanksgiving

November’s last Thursday was quite unique, both Thanksgiving and the first full day of Hanukkah fell on the same calendar date, this hasn’t happened since 1888 and not likely to happen again anytime soon. The holiday weekend brought with it amazing discounts and deals, which means that retailers would have seen some of their busiest days of the entire year. If you have been noticing that your Instagram feed has been more populated than usual with pictures of family gatherings and stuffed turkeys, don’t get confused as Instagram saw its busiest day ever this Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, as users shared their holiday related pictures on the service.

Thanksgiving has actually been Instagram’s busiest day ever for two years now, the service saw a surge in usage this time last year as well. Over 10 million photos were uploaded to Instagram last year, which means that roughly 200 images were uploaded every second. The service has exponentially expanded since then and has even introduced its Video on Instagram feature, so it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that there was an increase of filtered photos as well as videos being shared on Instagram. The Instagram team says its “truly humbled” that users chose to capture and share their precious holiday moments on the service.
