A competition to re-imagine suburban surface parking lots tapped architects to transform the often-wasted space into flexible urban plazas. This entry, dubbed "Civic Arches" by Utile, Inc. Architecture + Urban Planning, proposes using the the arches beneath a Long Island Railroad viaduct to park cars of commuters during the week, then reclaim the space as a farmers market on the weekends. How many of these famous movie and TV cars can you recognize?

Famous cars in movies and TV shows are just as much a character to the story as the actors and actresses. If Batman drove a Volvo or Marty McFly time traveled in a Toyota, it just wouldn’t be the same. They’re iconic. So how many of these cars do you recognize?

Fleksy Keyboard Makes Its Way Out Of Beta

Unlike Android, Apple’s iOS platform does not simply allow for users to change the default keyboard at whim. In fact for the most part, most iOS apps use the default Apple keyboard which in all honesty is a great keyboard, but at the same time who doesn’t like a bit of variety, right? Back in mid-2013, we had heard word that Android keyboard, Fleksy, could soon be making its way onto iOS devices and sure enough it did. The beta for released back in 2013 and we saw Fleksy arrive onto apps like Wordbox, Google Voice Connect, and Blindsquare. Now the good news is that Fleksy has since come out of beta, meaning that it will now be available to developers around the world who might wish to implement the Fleksy keyboard as an alternative in their iOS apps. Apple Patent Suggest More Advanced Use Of Magnets

Apple Patent Suggest More Advanced Use Of MagnetsWhile there are many third-party covers and cases for the iPad which are sometimes priced cheaper, there are some out there who still prefer Apple’s Smart Cover or Smart Cases. In terms of protection, we wouldn’t exactly call it robust but it gets the job done. That being said, could Apple expand on the use of Smart Covers in the future that goes beyond just protecting the screens of our tablets? Perhaps, thanks to the folks at AppleInsider who have discovered a patent filed by Apple that describes a Smart Cover accessory that will offer up more functionality than before.

As you know, the Smart Cover comes with magnets inside that when aligned with the magnets inside the iPad, will either turn the tablet’s screen on or off. However the patent suggests that Apple could use keyed magnetic structures in the chassis of the iPad itself, which would then allow the tablet to “hold” onto devices like gaming controllers, credit card readers, detachable keyboards, and even the possibility of attaching to another iPad which could then be used as a dual-display setup! The patent also talks about smart magnets which will require a ring to be used to activate it. The ring, worn on the finger of the user, can be used to perform gesture based commands without having to actually touch the iPad itself. Of course there’s no telling if Apple will ever turn this patent into a reality, but it sure does sound like a nifty idea.

iPhones Are Favored By The Affluent In The US [Study]

iPhones Are Favored By The Affluent In The US [Study]It is no secret that Apple’s iPhones are expensive. Heck, even when Apple tried to make a cheaper iPhone in the iPhone 5c, it was still considered expensive which led to customers deciding to fork out a little bit more to get the “better” iPhone 5s. That being said, does this mean that iPhones are typically favored by those who are considered to be slightly well-off?

Well in a recent study conducted by the NPD Group, it was found that customers who made $60,000 or more a year in annual income tended to favor Apple products, while those who made below $60,000 leaned more towards Samsung’s products or other brands. In fact those earning under $30,000 a year greatly favored Samsung at 35%, versus Apple at only 20%. (more…)

Muscle Made From Fishing Wire Is 100x Stronger Than Yours

Muscle Made From Fishing Wire Is 100x Stronger Than Yours

Synthetic muscles are generally expensive, weak, and not very durable—not exactly a welcome replacement for natural muscle. Thankfully, a research team led by University of Texas at Dallas Professor Ray Baughman just turned all of that around, making wickedly strong artificial muscle fibers from nothing more than fishing wire.

iPhone Responsible For China Mobile’s Increase In High-Speed Data Subscriptions

iPhone Responsible For China Mobiles Increase In High Speed Data SubscriptionsWhen you own a feature phone, chances are beyond the need for a plan to call and text, there is no need for a data plan since your phone either can’t support it, or you’ll be stuck with EDGE which is infuriating slow and there would be no point. That being said, it seems that with the iPhone’s market share in China on the rise, it looks like high-speed data subscriptions are on the rise too. This is according to data gather by Cantor Fitzgerald analyst, Brian White, who has reported that mainly due to the iPhone, China Mobile has managed to 14 million more high-speed data subscribers in the month of January alone, a growth which is apparently faster than any other time in history.

Given that China Mobile is pretty much the largest carrier in the country, and possibly one of the largest in the world, it is unsurprising that they have managed to nab that many new high-speed data subscribers. However it should be noted that despite rumors of a deal with Apple to finally offer the iPhone on its network, the carrier and Apple only managed to reach an agreement in late 2013, where they also finally deployed and certified its own TD-LTE 4G network, a frequency which is supported by the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. This is versus the carrier’s TD-SCDMA 3G network which is not supported by current and previous iPhone models.
