CyberNotes: iLike Stands Out in the Social Music Crowd

This article was written on July 07, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you’re on Facebook, you’ve at least heard of iLike. If you’re not on Facebook and you haven’t heard of iLike, it’s a social music discovery site that has recently exploded into popularity ever since the launch of their Facebook Application. Whether or not you’re on Facebook, iLike stands out in the social music crowd, and it’s worth checking out.

On Facebook

iLike launched last October, and they were actually doing well for themselves with around 3 million users.  They saw a huge boom in popularity ever since their Facebook App launched, and now they are registering 300,000 new users every single day!

Ilikefacebook

The CEO of iLike, Ali Partovi has said that “iLike is on track to becoming the dominant music service for the Facebook community.  It’s something we never would have contemplated just a month ago.” It’s now the second most popular app on Facebook.

Both the iLike site and the Facebook app are nearly identical. You can learn where your favorite artists are going on tour and see who else is attending. They also allow you to search and add streaming music and music videos to your Facebook profile.

Features

  • Connect iTunes – Use iTunes? Now you can connect your music library to you friends, see related music based upon your tastes, and download free music from new artists via the Sidebar for iTunes. If you don’t have iTunes, you can still discover music through friends – you’ll take a quiz so that your tastes can be matched appropriately.
  • Get your friends to sign-up – This is a social music service, thus friends are important. Once you get your friends to sign-up, your friends can recommend music for you, and you can see which songs that your friends are listening to. You can also find other people who you don’t know that like the same kind of music as you.
  • Compare tastes with others – Want to know how your tastes in music compare with your friends? No problem!
    Ilike_comparetasteswithothers
  • Free MP3’s from new artists – As mentioned, you can download free music from new artists based upon your tastes, and yes it is legal! It’s not music you would hear on the radio, but it is personalized picks to match your tastes.

Share your tastes with the iLike Widget

Sharing music is simple with the iLike widget. You can add the widget to any web page, even MySpace. It will flip through “artists iLike,” “just played songs,” “most played songs,” and “songs iLike.”

Play the iLIke Challenge

When I first added the iLike application on Facebook, I quickly got addicted to the iLike challenge. All you do is listen to a track, and then you have to name the artist or song. You can do this either on Facebook, or the iLike website.

Wrapping it up

iLike has quickly become a social music service that stands out in the crowd! Hopefully their recent explosion in popularity only means that there will be great things to come from them in the future.

Impressive time-lapse video of The Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, 2,600 acres of desolate desert where 5,000 military airplanes went to die. It makes me sad to look at them, but their decay is truly beautiful.

Leaked Nokia Lumia 630 Product Sheet Hints At 4.5 Inch Display

Leaked Nokia Lumia 630 Product Sheet Hints At 4.5 Inch Display

Nokia might be in the process of wrapping up its devices and services division and getting ready to drop it in Microsoft’s lap, but that doesn’t mean it has been sitting idly by, leaving the market to fend for itself. Earlier this week it unveiled its first ever Android phones, and it is believed that Nokia still has a couple of Windows Phone devices up its sleeve. The Nokia Lumia 630 is apparently one of them, and this smartphone’s purported “product sheet” has been leaked, which points towards a 4.5 inch display and also sheds light on the possible dimensions.

If this product sheet is to be believed, the Lumia 630 will come in at 129.55mm x 66.7mm, with the front being dominated by its 4.5 inch display. If previous specifications leak turn out to be true, it could be a 720p HD display on this smartphone. Apparently codenamed “Moneypenny,” the Lumia 630 was initially expected to be unveiled at MWC 2014.

There may very well be one aspect to this smartphone that will set it apart from all Windows Phone devices, even those from Nokia. It is believed that the Lumia 630 is going to be the world’s first dual-SIM Windows Phone. That’s very much possible, given that Microsoft has already confirmed Windows Phone 8.1 will bring support for dual-SIM phones. Presumably it will be launched in emerging markets at the start, after Microsoft formally unveiled its next major mobile platform update.

Volvo Brags About New In-Car Experience Using a Large Touchscreen in the Dash

Volvo is a car company that has built its reputation around on safety for the most part. The company is talking a bit about its new in-car experience and that experience revolves around a big touchscreen. I happen to think this is a bad idea for safety.

While touchscreens look cool and modern, anyone who has driven in a vehicle where the physical buttons have been replaced with touch will tell you that touch is not as easy to use while driving as old-fashioned buttons and knobs. With a touch system, you have to take your eyes off the road and look at what you are pressing.

Stealing a page from Tesla, Volvo is using a big tablet-like touchscreen in the center console to replace the buttons and switches we are used to.  The screen is in portrait mode and each section has its own theme with navigation at the top. While the new UI certainly makes for a clean look, usability might suffer.

Perhaps Volvo has figured out how to make its system easy to use without constantly looking at it, we will have to wait and see.

The company has an event scheduled on March 25th in New York and London where it will finally show us the HTC One’s successor. HTC itself has been involved in building a lot of hype for its next flagship, even taking a swing at Samsung for this very purpose. The latest bit about this device comes from an unofficial source, with the new flagship being spotted in all its glory.
