Arcade Machine Accepts Bitcoins: Bitcoin-op

A growing number of establishments are accepting Bitcoin as payment. Now you can even use it to play arcade games. British company Liberty Games combined the cutting edge currency with the aging gaming platform to make a simple transaction hilariously complicated. The company used a Raspberry Pi and a PiFace add-on to make the payment interface.

Liberty Games first tried their Bitcoin payment mod on a pool table. After receiving good feedback for that mod, the company decided to apply it on an arcade machine.

The great thing about their method is that it doesn’t mess with the machine’s software, which means it can be performed on pretty much any coin-operated arcade game. Not that you should.

A closer look at the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

Okay, that’s it. You’ve had enough of highly compressed video codecs that crap out on detailed shots and make decent color grading a pipe dream. Now that Blackmagic’s $995 Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC) is RAW-ready, isn’t it time to make the jump to …

Flappy Bird is the embodiment of our descent into madness

Imagine this scenario, times infinity.

(Credit: DotGears Studios/Screenshots by CNET)

It was after maybe the 14th or 15th time I’d seen “Game Over” flash across my iPhone screen in the last maybe seven minutes that I decided that the app Flappy Bird — an experience so simultaneously simple and maddening that I could already picture it haunting my dreams — was perhaps the worst smartphone game ever created.

I had hit a high score of 12 on my fourth or fifth attempt, finding myself secretly elated at the speedy proficiency of my mindless tapping timing. And then I proceeded to lose after earning a single point — literally just one successful obstacle cleared — about 10 times in a row. Before I knew it, I was sitting there at my desk, heat crawling up the back of my neck, ready to shake my phone in frustration like a ’90s kid ready to dismantle his NES controller during the “Turbo Tunnel” level of Battletoads.

Target Hack Possibly Started With Vendor Credential Theft

Target Hack Possibly Started With Vendor Credential Theft

Much has already been said and written about the Target hack which occurred over the holiday season. The retailer itself had confirmed that it had been the victim of a security breach, and soon after, another retailer confirmed the same. Security researchers are of the view that multiple U.S. retailers were attacked during the same period, using one form or the other of the same malware that a Russian teenager is believed to have written. Federal Authorities including the U.S. Secret Service are investigating, and Target reveals that the wheels might have been put in motion when credentials from one of its vendors were stolen.

Geeky Heroes Boiled Down to Basic Blocks

Artist Adam Lister creates awesome watercolor paintings of iconic pop culture figures using rudimentary block shapes. The most meta of his images has to be the watercolor of Bob Ross – though I’m having a hard time making out any happy little trees.

Despite their apparent simplicity, each image clearly conveys its subjects, while giving them a sort of 16-bit pixelated sensibility to them. He’s done versions of Darth Vader, Superman, Boba Fett, Batman and Robin, Iron Man, and even Forrest Gump. But my personal favorite is Kirk and Spock:

Why You Should Never Listen To Ride of the Valkyries While Driving

Why You Should Never Listen To Ride of the Valkyries While Driving

Time is a slippery continuum. Watching the hands on a clock tick will feel way, way different depending on the situation; trying to frantically write something on deadline with five minutes to spare ain’t the same as desperately willing a conference call to finish more quickly. It turns out that music can have an equally brain-bending effect on how we process the days of our lives.

iPad Pro Release Chances Reportedly Slim

It was first rumored last year that Apple is toying with the idea of developing a larger iPad, which is now commonly referred to as the iPad Pro. This tablet was said to have a 12.9 inch display and it was believed that iPad Pro would primarily be geared towards the business and enterprise market. Some rumors claimed that a launch was imminent, that it would take place in the first few months of this year. However, market research firm IHS believes that there’s not enough evidence to support that an iPad Pro release is going to take place in the very near future.
