FingerReader Helps Blind “Read”

FingerReader Helps Blind “Read”All the way back in 1829, Frenchman Louis Braille came up with a tactile system that was capable of letting those who suffered from vision impairment to “read” books using the tips of their fingers, which has evolved to what we know today as the Braille system. The Braille system comprised of a series of raised dots, as the finger trails over a line of braille text, where the reader would interpret it in the same way a sighted person is able to read using ordinary letters. The thing is, Braille can be pretty tough to understand and master, and there are still plenty of reading materials that have yet to get a braille edition. MIT researchers intend to circumvent this situation by rolling out the FingerReader, which is a new piece of wearable technology that can read books out loud to those with vision problems.

The FingerReader is worn around your finger as a ring (hence its name), where you can then follow a line of text in a book or on a screen. It sports a camera which is capable of looking at the text and recognizing it, where the ring will then read whatever text is in front of it aloud to you. Should one’s finger move away from the current line that is being read, the FingerReader’s software is smart enough to recognize such a departure, resulting in haptic feedback so that you can correct your movement. Apart from that, the MIT research team intend to make it deliver on-the-spot translation capability as well in the future. [Press Release]

Vintage Jukebox Clutch Is Retro-Chic

Marching to the beat of your own drum is a whole lot easier when you can
take music with you. These days, portable music players take a
minimalist approach, and just don’t act like fashion accessories in the
ways that they once did. So, it is pretty great that one designer has
come up with a quirky yet chic solution to this.

DIY Web-Shooter To Complement Your Cyclops Ruby Quartz Visor

An idle mind might be the devil’s workshop, but there are times when idle minds end up as the hotbed of innovation, the “Eureka!” moment, so to speak. Well, for those of you who cannot get enough of modern day CGI that makes it possible for movies to turn our favorite comic books into reality, then here is Patrick Priebe’s proof-of-concept web-shooter that belongs to the one and only, the amazing Spider-Man.

Patrick Priebe might be no Peter Parker, but this does not mean he isn’t handy with his hands and agile mind. Priebe also happens to be the very same person who came up with this DIY laser visor that allows you to “shoot” laser beams in the direction you’re looking at, where your imagination will get the rest of the job done. The web-shooter features three in-glove buttons, where it is controlled in the same manner as that of its comic book counterpart. One of the buttons would charge the device, while the other fires a projectile, with the third launching the retractable brass-tipped harpoon that replaces Spidey’s super strong webs. A 350 volt battery will power this bad boy, but don’t worry about the harpoon’s impact as it is not even strong enough to skewer a styrofoam block.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition To Get Android 4.4.3 KitKat (Rumor)In the past week, we did hear about how Sprint mentioned about Android 4.4.3 KitKat for the Nexus 5 smartphone, which leads to the question as to which particular device is going to be the next one to receive this particular mobile operating system update. There is every chance that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is all up for it, at least according to the Bluetooth SIG.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play edition is a device that falls under the phablet category, sporting a 6.4” display, and it has been certified for some Android 4.4.3 KitKat action. For those who want definite proof on the Bluetooth SIG, it is not there, but rather, one would stumble upon a reference to the “Togari GPE”.

Togari happens to be the code name for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, while GPE stands for Google Play edition. As for the software version listed, it happens to be the KTU72.S1.3013, which is widely believed to represent Android 4.4.3 KitKat. Google Play edition smartphones rely on a stock Android OS, which makes it faster to update compared to unlocked and carrier models. After all, these updates are sent out straight from Google without having to go through any intermediary.

Samsung.com Down Because Of Samsung Building Fire

For those of you who have been on the receiving end of error messages on your Samsung smartphone, and had been scratching your head all day long, trying to figure out just what could have led to such a situation, it is time that you no longer wonder. Apparently, the Samsung.com website was not made accessible to the masses on the Internet simply because of a fire that happened at the Samsung SDS building which is located in Gwacheon, South Korea. The particular site was unavailable, where it led to error messages on many of Samsung’s products, where these include their array of smartphones, of course. The website outage happened until this morning at 6:15am EST, when the site returned online, with the entire gamut of services restored as well.

That particular fire began on Easter Sunday afternoon (we’re looking at Korean time here) on the building’s fourth floor, which so happened to contain the back-up data center for the South Korean consumer electronics giant. There were several credit card related services that encountered the error message, although one must take note that the main data center that is located in Suwon was not affected by this blaze.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported in South Korean media, and as far as we know, things have more or less returned to normal despite the video above depicting a far more adverse effect.

Boat In Apple Maps Thought To Be Nessie At First

Boat In Apple Maps Thought To Be Nessie At FirstApple Maps might be able to get you from point A to point B in an unfamiliar territory, but this does not mean that it is the first app or program that people go to in order to find their way around. Google Maps is, no doubt about it, still the undisputed king when it comes to navigational apps, and Nokia’s free HERE Maps too, does a pretty good job. Of course, there are some strange events in Google’s online services including a lady who caught her fiance cheating on her, now what are the odds of that happening? Apple Maps is not immune to its own strangeness, too, as some claim that satellite photos offered by Apple shows off what could be Nessie, the nickname for the fabled Loch Ness monster. The thing is, ‘Nessie’ happened to be nothing more than a boat, plain and simple.

A superior version of the satellite photo has depicted a boat, and this image is not seen on Google Maps at the moment. Of course, in a low resolution image, it could be mistaken for the famous creature that some folks believe exist deep in the loch, although naysayers have long claimed that this is nothing more than a wake from a boat – which has proven to be that exactly in a higher resolution.

The human mind is certainly extremely adept at seeing what it wants to see, and will be able to carve out a niche of its imagination to deliver an interesting synopsis on a particular situation. What next, Bigfoot appearing on Apple Maps?

Ultima Online And Dark Age Of Camelot Appear On Steam Greenlight

Ultima Online And Dark Age Of Camelot Appear On Steam GreenlightBefore MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, EVE Online, and so on, there were titles like Ultimate Online, Everquest, and Dark Age of Camelot, some of the more classic MMORPGs from back in the day. Heck, Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot are still up and running and it seems that both games have recently made an appearance on Steam Greenlight.

Both games have been taken over by Broadsword Online Games and the listing on Greenlight was spotted a month after the takeover, suggesting that Broadsword Online Game had something to do with it. Assuming that both titles are approved, the games would be free to download via Steam, although we should note that both games do with a subscription fee so unless you plan on paying for it, you’d be out of luck.

However both games will come with a 14-day trial period so thankfully gamers will be able to test the games out for a while to decide if they want to pay for it. Like we said both games are very old. Ultima Online was launched in 1997 while Dark Age of Camelot launched in 2001. They are considered to be classics and they don’t exactly have the best graphics, although admittedly there is something very endearing about them.

Both games definitely have their appeal, especially to old school gamers and RPG fans who might not necessarily enjoy all the theorycrafting and number crunching that seems to be prevalent in games today. Either way there’s no word on its release yet but we’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more info.

The battle for exclusive games has come to smartphones

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition Makes Its Way Onto Android

Baldurs Gate: Enhanced Edition Makes Its Way Onto AndroidBaldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition has been an iOS exclusive for a while although this wasn’t by design, but rather because its developers had not gotten around to creating an Android version yet, although it was on their list of things to do.

Well the good news for Android gamers is that the wait is over because if you have had your eye on Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, it is now officially available for purchase and download via the Google Play Store.

Given that this is a PC game that has been reworked to fit our mobile devices, it is not surprising that the game is priced a lot more than your average mobile game and will set gamers back $9.99. It’s a small price to pay, especially if you used to play the game back in the day and wouldn’t mind reliving the experience on your mobile device.

For those unfamiliar with the Enhanced Edition, it’s basically the first Baldur’s Gate title that has been remade for modern gaming. The graphics have been updated slightly and there have also been additional characters, items, quests, and areas that have been added to the game, just in case you were hoping for additional content beyond what you have played back in the good old days.

This is the first title and we expect that Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition will see a release on Android as well down the road, although at this point in time we’re not sure when that might be.
