Project Loon Tests LTE In Nevada (Rumor)

Project Loon Tests LTE In Nevada (Rumor)We have heard about Google’s Project Loon before, where this initiative intends to bring Internet connectivity to the masses using air balloons that float up high in the sky. It takes less than a month to make its way across the world, and has the potential to deliver up to 10Mbps speeds for users. It seems that these high-flying Wi-Fi balloons could also be testing out 4G LTE connectivity as they make their way on top of the Nevada desert.

So far, Google has already testing out its Project Loon Wi-Fi balloons in New Zealand, and hence it is not surprising at all to see that tests are also been conducted secretly right there and then in their very own country. So far, Google has picked up permission from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in order to test out its Project Loon balloons in the northern Nevada desert.

In such tests, Google too, could be making an assessment as to whether it is able to tap into licensed radio spectrum to broadcast Wi-Fi. At this point in time, Project Loon has made use of the unlicensed 2.4GHz band for its Wi-Fi testing, where they are now also testing out a couple of radio spectrum types as depicted in the FCC filings, citing a broad class signal which could point to the possibility of 4G LTE.

Democreativity Asks For Ideas On Spreading Peace, Love And Democracy

Democreativity Asks For Ideas On Spreading Peace, Love And DemocracyVideo games – this is a topic where many people have different opinions. Some believe that there are games out there which are just way too violent even with the ratings board approving it, while others figure out that regardless of the kind of video game played, it is still better to turn off the screen and head outdoors for some real fun. Whatever it is, video games have certainly captured the imagination of the masses – otherwise, how else could we see an explosion of the mobile scene that we know today? Sweden intends to change one’s perspective about video games through the Democreativity initiative.

Democreativity is the result of a team effort which comprises of VisitSweden, the Swedish Institute and Business Sweden, with the hope of delivering both democracy as well as creativity to nations all over the world. The Democreativity taskforce has issued a clarion call for the world to contribute their suggestions on candidates for “the most unlikely game ever made,” where the team will then work on it.

The end result will hopefully end up as a truly unique experience, where there are no winners or losers in the game, and collaboration and exploratiion happen to be the ultimate end goals. I am not so sure whether people will continue to play this after they have satisfied their curiosity in giving it a go. To date, over 500 people from 126 countries have already submitted their thoughts on this, and counting.

Toshiba’s MicroSD Memory Cards Are World’s Fastest

Toshiba’s MicroSD Memory Cards Are World’s FastestToshiba did make the headlines this earlier this week, and the Japanese company intends to cap it all off by debuting the fastest microSD memory cards in the world. These new microSD memory cards happen to be the first in the industry that complies with the High-Speed UHS-II Interface Standard. It so happens that this is the ultra high speed serial bus interface that has been defined in the SD Memory Card Standard Ver. 4.20, and those who are interested will be able to choose from 32GB and 64GB capacities.

Being UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) enabled, these new Toshiba microSD memory cards will enable high-quality 4K video capture at constant minimum write speeds of 30MB/s. This translates to the ability to record 4K2K video, live broadcast and content on high-performance cameras without missing a beat or suffering from a drop in quality.

The 64GB cards do come with a maximum read speed of 260MB/s and a maximum write speed of 240MB/s. As for the smaller capacity 32GB cards, these have a maximum read speed of 145MB/s and maximum write speed of 130MB/s, which would represent an 8x write speed improvement and 2.7x read speed improvement if you were to take Toshiba’s existing 32GB microSD UHS-I cards and place them in a side-by-side performance comparison. There is no word on pricing details for either capacity just yet though. [Press Release]

New LED Lamps Could Help Save Money, Improve Safety

New LED Lamps Could Help Save Money, Improve SafetyAs we move more and more towards a paradigm shift in thinking, having a concern for the environment so that the next generation will have a place to live on earth, new advancements have been made to be more power efficient while lowering wastage. Take the Solar Impulse 2 for example – this solar-powered plane intends to circumnavigate the globe on solar power alone! It looks like Jersey’s street lighting bill is going to get cut in half thanks to revitalized lamps that see action in St Helier’s Liberation Square. These lamps have been fitted with light-emitting diodes, or LEDs in short, that will consume just 33% of the energy of conventional bulbs, and apart from saving the local authorities money in terms of its electricity bill, it could also help improve road safety thanks to its brightness level.

According to Jersey transport officials, such technology will be rolled out across all main island roads as long as budgets permit. As for the lights at Liberation Square, these will be dimmed between midnight and 6am. Bob Baudains, a street works manager at Transport and Technical Services, did share that such LEDs are capable of lasting up to a 100,000 hours “without significant maintenance”, hence making our streets safer and more appealing to walk/travel along.
