Apple Introduces The iWatch [Parody]

There might come a day when this headline wouldn’t be accompanied by a [parody] disclaimer but we’ll probably have to wait a bit for that. It has been a very long time since rumors have been floating around the Apple is working on a smartwatch of its own. Widely referred to as the iWatch there hasn’t been so much as a hint from Cupertino about the existence of this wearable device. Ahead of Apple’s annual developer conference, where its once again rumored to show off the iWatch, a parody video of the announcement has been posted on YouTube.

Created by a YouTube channel called “Matthias,” its an Apple-style video presentation with sweeping animated shots of the device and magnanimous voiceovers. They’ve previously done a similar video for the iPhone 5s as well.

The creators have a bit of fun with it as well by demonstrating all sorts of absurd and outrageous features. Even the unit they show is based on the purported design language of the actual iWatch, so props to them for putting in the effort!

Bordering on the three minute mark the parody clip is worthy of a view. It may even get you to think about whether you really do need an iWatch!

Android TV Announcement Rumored For Google I/O 2014

Android TV Announcement Rumored For Google I/O 2014

Tomorrow Apple will certainly hog the spotlight after making announcements at its annual developers event, but its not the only company that has an event like this schedule in June. Google is right on its heels with its own developer-focused event. According to a new report the previously rumored Android TV might be announced at Google I/O 2014. Powered by the company’s Pano user interface, it is believed that Android TV will also focus on gaming.

The Mountain View based company has been down this road before with Google TV which is now chalked up as a spectacular flop. It has been eclipsed by competitors with little or no consumer interest left. Which is why it makes sense for Google to start again with a clean slate.

The main distinction between Android and Google TV is reportedly going to be that the former will focus on online media and gaming whereas the latter tried to bring together pay TV services and applications. Netflix and Hulu apps are said to be available at launch. Google will reportedly team up with hardware manufacturers for Android TV set-top boxes and smart TVs.

Pano will apparently distinguish Android TV from its failed predecessor. The user interface is basically a series of cards which users can browse horizontally, with each card having “deep links” into publisher’s apps. This will give users the option to start playback right away instead on first launching a publisher’s apps before browsing for content.

It also makes sense why Google would want to focus on Android-based video games with its new platform. Rivals are already doing this, look no further than the Amazon Fire TV which comes with a standalone gaming controller. Yes, these devices won’t deliver console level gaming but Android users might appreciate the chance to play their favorite titles on a big screen.

Google I/O 2014 takes place June 25-26, 2014 in San Francisco.

HP Announces New Android Laptop And Chromebook

HP Announces New Android Laptop And Chromebook

HP today announced two new notebooks both of which are powered by software made by Google. First up is the company’s new Chromebook. It teamed up with Google last year to launch the Chromebook 11 which was praised a lot for its design and vivid 11.6-inch display. The company follows that up with the new Chromebook PC. It also has an 11.6-inch display like the Chromebook 11 but the design language is much more in line with HP’s Chromebook 14 notebooks this time.

As one can expect from a Chrome OS powered notebook the Chromebook PC has a Samsung Exynos 5250 processor with up to 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. Weighing just under 2.7 pounds the notebook offers 1,366×768 pixel resolution and comes in at just under an inch thick.

HP says that the battery is good for 6.25 hours which is comparatively lower to what similar notebooks from Dell or Acer offer. Different colors will be offered but initially only white and turquoise will be available. Prices start at $249 for the Wi-Fi model, one with built-in 3G will be offered as well. A ship date has not been revealed.

PC makers have been testing the waters with Android based computers and HP has jumped on that bandwagon as well with the SlateBook. It delivers Android KitKat experience in a clamshell form factor. Powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor with up to 2GB of RAM the SlateBook has a 14-inch full HD touchscreen display and up to 64GB of onboard storage.

Weighing in at 3.71 pounds the SlateBook ships on August 6th with prices starting at $399. Battery life is said to be 9.25 hours.

Samsung Galaxy Tab4 Active Rumored

Samsung Galaxy Tab4 Active Rumored

Samsung has a knack for releasing an “Active” variant of its flagship smartphone. Just recently the Galaxy S5 Active was officially announced. It hasn’t done that for tablets as yet but if a new rumor is to be believed that it may not be too far off. Samsung has applied for the trademark “Samsung Galaxy Tab4 Active” hinting at the possibility that an IP-certified variant of this tablet might be in the pipeline.

It won’t exactly be doing anything groundbreaking though since this won’t be the first truly rugged tablet. Sony already has a couple of Xperia Z tablets out in the market that are IP55/57 certified, making them both dust and water resistant.

Galaxy Tab4 Active will however have the distinction of being the first rugged tablet from Samsung. The possibility exists that it may even tout an industrial tank-inspired design like the Galaxy S5 Active.

But as a potential customer do you think resistance to the elements would make you want to purchase a Galaxy Tab4? Tablets are generally used differently than smartphones so its highly unlikely that a user will drop it on the pavement. But if you’re someone who likes catching up on an e-book or surfing the web in the bath than a rugged water resistant tablet will certainly be a compelling product.
