Adobe Photoshop Express App Arrives On Windows Phone 8

adobe ps express wpWe have seen Adobe announce the Photoshop Express for Android app update earlier this year in January, leaving users on the Windows Phone platform wondering just when will their turn arrive. Well, if you have been displaying the virtue of patience all this while, you will be pleased to know that Adobe Photoshop Express for Windows Phone 8 has just rolled out, which is good news considering iOS- and Android-powered devices have had this bad boy for close to four years already.

This image editing application will be accompanied by a variety of image editing features, ranging from being able to perform an image crop, straighten, rotate or flip photos, fix red eye, exposure and clarity, as well as throwing in 20 more filters which are not too different from the ones found in Instagram. Once you are done editing the relevant images, you can share those to Facebook or Instagram in a jiffy.

Not only that, Photoshop Express for Windows Phone will also boast of in-app purchases that will enable more features including “Look Pack” and “Noise Reduction Pack,” should you want to take advantage of those. This is a freemium productivity app so to speak, since it can be downloaded for free and customized if you would want more features accordingly.

YouTube Music Hits Will Be Aired On Sirius XM

youtube one billion users

There has been much talk recently about YouTube and music. The online video streaming giant announced earlier today that new and hit trending tracks on YouTube will be aired on satellite radio courtesy Sirius XM. A separate show will be conducted in which the hits will be aired, the show itself will air on Sirius’ Hits 1 pop station.

Airing weekly, this new show will be called YouTube 15. At the helm will be Jenna Marbles. Ardent YouTube users need no introduction, Jenna Marbles is one of the most popular YouTubers with over 13 million subscribers.

Emerging artists will get their fair share as well alongside the most popular music artists on YouTube. Presumably the playlist will be generated based on the most number of plays during one week. YouTube 15 debuts July 11th.

This happens to be the first time that YouTube, owned by Google, has partnered with another platform to show its importance in the online music scene. This may very well be the first of many steps that YouTube takes to position itself as a serious music service while shaking off the notion that its merely a vast repository for cat videos.

Google has already confirmed that later this summer the much rumored YouTube music streaming service is going to go live. For a monthly subscription fee users will get access to tracks from major and indie labels alike sans any advertisements.

LEGO Used To Study Plant Growth

lego plantLEGO has certainly brought plenty of joy to the lives of little ones as well as over the years, where its latest advancement to remain relevant in today’s fast changing culture would be the adaptation of LEGO video games, a LEGO movie, as well as LEGO Fusion that bridges the virtual and physical worlds. Having said that, LEGO is not all about play and entertainment, as Ludovico Cademartiri, an Iowa State University assistant professor of materials science and engineering, relies on LEGO bricks as a scientific tool to study plant growth.

In an effort to understand the various environmental effects on plant growth, including variations in climate and soil characteristics which affect root growth, Cademartiri was looking for highly controlled environments which will be able to expose entire plants to environmental effects including the likes of nutrients, water, oxygen gradients as well as physical obstacles for the roots.

Greenhouses were not suitable since they only create fairly controlled environments for entire plants, but have one major drawback of being homogeneous. To rely on microfluidic technologies, on the other hand, might help him achieve his objective – if he has an unlimited budget to work with, that is, since they happen to be expensive, relatively complex and is difficult to scale up.

LEGO bricks come in to save the day then, and in the words of Cademartiri, “Forget for a minute that they’re used as toys. They’re actually pieces of high-quality plastic, built to extraordinary standards of precision, that you can use to build stuff. They happen to be a good example of how something simple can solve a complex design problem.”

The use of LEGO bricks helped Cademartiri and his research team construct engineered environments for plant and root studies. Pretty neat, don’t you think so? [Press Release]

Apple Reportedly Developing Its Own Smart Home Hardware

Apple sign logo110712125041

When Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company is going to enter into new product categories this year, many thought that he was talking about smartwatches and voice-enabled HDTV sets. Rather interesting claims published in a report today make it seem like the company may have its sights on a totally different category. Apple is believed to be working on the development of smart home hardware.

Now this doesn’t seem completely impossible given the fact that at WWDC 2014 Apple showed off Homekit. The software will allow users to control connected devices in the home such as cameras, doors, thermostats, switches, plugs, locks, lights and more. Apple has said that it will work with third party manufacturers on Homekit compatible products.

According to the report Apple is past the “exploratory phase of development,” which means that at least there’s a team in Cupertino trying to figure out how to extend Apple’s reach into the smart home market. It also claims that the development of these products could be stopped at anytime, that might happen if the company convinces itself that this is not the right move.

Though it is not known exactly what type of smart home products Apple is interested in developing. Surely they will be controlled through iOS devices and Siri integration will make it much more easier.

It is too soon to predict when these smart home devices could come to the market. The new software unveiled at WWDC 2014 isn’t due until fall so for all we know these devices might be on the 2015 roadmap. There’s also the possibility that the report is completely wrong, but then again, you never know with unofficial sources.

Tofu Ingredient Might Make Solar Panel Manufacturing Greener

tofu glassNature knows best, and in the case for natural solutions when it comes to solving problems, you can chalk up another point of Gaia this time around, as it concerns the manufacturing of solar panels. Solar panels are not cheap to make, and neither is the process environmentally-friendly to boot. After all, solar cells rely on an extremely toxic and expensive substance known as cadmium chloride, but all of that could change in the future as magnesium chloride, a chemical used to make tofu and bath salts, might be a viable replacement.

This particular use for magnesium chloride was stumbled upon by a University of Liverpool researcher, having extracted it directly from seawater, and is a whole lot more affordable, too. We are talking about it costing just $0.001 per gram compared to $0.30, and it does not lose an ounce of effectiveness against cadmium chloride in tests, making it an extremely viable alternative. Interestingly enough, magnesium chloride has also seen action in products like tofu, bath salts and is used to de-ice roads.

Imagine replacing the toxic cadmium chloride with a naturally occurring substance, that will not only help save a whole lot of money in the long run, making solar power a far more viable alternative, not to mention keeping the earth away from such toxic materials. Truly, this is a win-win situation that is worth exploring. [Press Release]
