Ugh Fine, I'm Buying a Moto 360

I do not need a smartwatch (no one does). I do not think smartwatches are anywhere near fully functional yet, or if they’ll ever be. But after seeing the Moto 360 yesterday , I know one truth that supersedes those others: I am going to buy one as soon as they let me.

A Tiny Mountable Power Bar Fixes Your Outlet's Most Annoying Flaws

No scientist has dedicated their time to the cause yet, but one day research will confirm that most outlets in an empty room will inevitably end up trapped and inaccessible behind heavy furniture. It’s a common problem that the new MOS Reach doesn’t necessarily solve, but does make less of a concern by letting you extend those outlets to within easy reach of wherever you’re sitting, working, or sleeping.

The Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid will keep your pots and pans from making a mess

Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid

If you make a home-cooked meal, you know there is a lot to pay attention to. Everything has specific heat and amounts of time to be set at. Regardless of how prepared you think you are, boiling over, grease splatter, and other types of overflow are going to happen. The only thing to keep the mess at bay is to use lids, but if you’re not careful, even that could leave you with sauce, soup, or a variety of other foods on top of your stove.

If you often get overwhelmed with cooking and wish that you had a little more help in the kitchen, then you might like the Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid. This has a dual-function auto-release valve that will close to keep moisture in, or open to let steam out. It has a stepped silicone gasket that will form a tight seal over pans that are 9-11 inches in diameter. The flower-shaped knob on top will allow you to grab the lid without burning yourself, which is certainly not the case for most glass and metal coverings.

There is a tempered glass center, so even when the lid is sealed you can make sure your food is cooking the way you want it to. This is available in red or black, and will cost you around $30. While it is dishwasher safe, it’s best to keep this on the top rack just in case. If you have a gas stove, never leave this lid on unattended and be sure that the flames don’t reach the lid. While it does a lot of the work on it’s own, you still don’t want it to catch on fire.

LG Curved ULTRA HD 4K OLED TV Launched In The UK

lg 77EC980V 1While England might have been knocked out of the World Cup in a rather unexpected manner, this does not mean those of you living in the UK have no more reason to continue watching the rest of the tournament as it enters the round of last 16. Why not do so with a really big telly in your living room? LG will be a bit late to the game though (pun not intended here) as they will only introduce their 77” and 65” LG ULTRA HD 4K OLED TVs later this October in the UK.

lg 77EC980V 2 457x640

Right now, it seems that the huge curved OLED TV market segment is being touted by Samsung and LG, or at least their marketing department has been doing a great job in pushing their respective products to the masses. Regardless of which screen size you choose, it will still arrive with a potent combination of ULTRA HIGH DEFINITION 4K and OLED technologies to deliver the ultimate viewing experience. The 77” (77EC980V) and 65” (65EC970V) ULTRA HD 4K OLED TVs offer 4K screen resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels), with automatically controlled color temperature for individual pixels thanks to the LG Colour Refiner, resulting in superior consistency and balance.

Not only that, your eyes will definitely appreciate the infinite contrast ratio that is carefully managed by LG’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) algorithm. There is also the option to settle for other high resolution viewing options, thanks to LG’s very own True 4K Engine Pro that is able to upscale SD, HD or Full HD content into breathtaking near-4K picture quality. Being able to decode broadcast signals in both H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats (at 30p or 60p) also makes this future-proof.

Of course, such luxury does not come cheap, with the 77” model retailing for a whopping £19,999, while the 65” model is a whole lot more affordable (relatively speaking) at £5,999 a pop.

Google Project Tango Tablet Launch Promised For Next Year

project tango devkit

Back in February Google announced Project Tango. The program revolves around smartphones and tablets that incorporate incredible cameras to give them a “human-scale understanding of space and motion.” So basically the device would have the ability to learn its surroundings. We saw prototype-stage devices earlier this year but today some great news comes out of the second day of I/O 2014. Google has confirmed that the Project Tango tablet launch is now slated for 2015.

That’s the consumer launch, mind you, so folks like you and I will be able to walk into a store and pick up a Project Tango tablet, and be able to experience all of its interesting features. To bring this to the market Google is partnering with its long-time hardware partner LG.

Unfortunately no further information was revealed about the Project Tango tablet other than its expected release time frame. We don’t know as yet what the specifications are going to be, what are the dimensions, the complete list of features or how much the tablet itself would cost when it hits the market next year.

Project Tango devices will have a depth sensor and motion tracking camera built-in to allow them to determine their orientation as well as see what’s in front to chart out the same on a 3D map. ”Imagine if the directions to your destination didn’t stop at the front door, but to tell you exactly where to go and what to do,” Tango’s program lead Johnny Lee said today.

Its certainly interesting and intriguing, and I for one can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Chip Implant In Brain Helps Paralyzed Man Move Hand With The Power Of Thought

chip bionic armThe advancement of medical technology, especially brain implants, has moved forward by leaps and bounds, that is for sure. Just last month alone, we talked about how a brain implant might help paralyzed people walk again, not to mention restore, implant or remove memories. Having said that , this microchip implanted in paralyzed Ian Burkhart has enabled the 23-year old to control his finger movement for the first time in a few years, using nothing but the power of thought alone, now how about that?

A special microchip was placed in the segment of Burkhart’s brain that controls the movement of his arms and hands a couple of months ago, and this remarkable implant has enabled him to create history, being the first quadriplegic who could move his own fingers.

Measuring 0.15” wide, this chip has 96 electrodes which are capable of reading thoughts, and will be hooked up by a port in Burkhart’s skull to a computer using a standard issue computer lead. The electrodes will do the work of deciphering messages that Burkhart sends to his brain, while the computer will perform the relevant “translation” into commands, which will then be sent to his forearm that has been slid through a “sleeve” which has additional electrodes. These electrodes will then stimulate the muscles in his hand, hence making them to obey accordingly.

This is a far longer route than normal, but it is better than nothing. It took all of just one-tenth of a second to transform thought into action. Hopefully future advancements would shrink down this phenomenal breakthrough to a more portable form factor.

ASUS To Undercut Samsung’s Android Wear Smartwatch On Price [Report]

asus transformer book t100 hands on review 03 640x359

So far only three manufacturers have shown off their Android Wear smartwatches, with LG and Samsung even offering up theirs for pre-orders yesterday. Motorola’s Moto 360 is destined for the market later this summer. While ASUS has made public its intention of launching an Android Wear smartwatch we have yet to actually see the device. Some new information has surfaced about this device. A report published today claims that the company aims to challenge Samsung’s Android Wear smartwatch on price.

Citing a source familiar with the company’s plans TechCrunch reports that the ASUS Android Wear smartwatch will possibly be priced between $99 and $149 when it launches. The source claims that ASUS is looking at a September launch because it didn’t want to “rush” the development of this product.

It does look like Google placed time constraints on manufacturers that wanted to be the poster boys for Android Wear. LG confirmed in a press conference yesterday that main reason why the G Watch didn’t have a heart rate sensor is because there wasn’t enough time to get the product ready with it.

By sacrificing the opportunity to be among the first Android Wear smartwatch makers, ASUS may be hoping to hit the nail on the head. Its smartwatch is rumored to have an AMOLED display, but details about the specifications remain scarce. The company hasn’t commented on this report.

Robot Understands Natural Language Commands

After so many years of working, developing and refining Honda’s ASIMO robot, plenty of work still needs to be done in order to help it understand humans better. You still cannot bark orders at ASIMO for it to bring you a drink, or pick up your socks. However, humanity is getting there, where Cornell intends to overcome this particular issue by teaching robots to interpret natural language instructions. Of course, this will include the casual ones, and as you can see in the video above, in order for a PR2 robot to scoop some ice cream for you. This, of course, after it serves you beer.

Ashutosh Saxena’s Robot Learning Lab are the ones behind the ability for the PR2 to be able to figure out logical inferences concerning missing steps or poor instructions, and it uses its 3D camera in order to perform a scan of its environment, before getting a better idea on the kind of objects within.

For instance, it has been programmed to associate different objects with their capabilities, where a pan would mean one can pour stuff into it, and from it, while stoves will provide the allowance to place a corresponding utensil on them in order to heat stuff up later on. This means asking it to “heat water” would see it make use of the available tools, stove or microwave included. You do not even need to place the items in the same place, since the instructions will still work as it’s 3D camera does the work of scanning the kitchen.
