Lumia Cyan Update Allegedly Spotted In Argentina

lumia cyan arNow that Lionel Messi has fired Argentina into the last 16 of the World Cup with his mesmerizing skill and talent, the country also has another reason to cheer – an alleged copy of the Nokia Lumia Cyan update has been spotted in that part of the South American continent, where it is touted to deliver a wide range of new firmware features for any compatible Lumia handsets.

In fact, there were also whispers of a provisional and pilot Cyan update for the Lumia 925 having been seen in Finland as well, so Argentina might not be alone in this. Could it be that other countries, too, could be on the receiving end of this particular update on a provisional basis? Users in Argentina have laid claim that the Lumia Cyan update has already made an appearance on their Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020 smartphones.

You might want to check out your Windows Phone-powered smartphone as to whether it has received this particular update, doing it through Settings > Phone Update > Check for Update. So far, we have heard that the Lumia Cyan update will arrive with Miracast support alongside Dolby Surround Sound Capture capability. Are you looking forward to this particular update on your Windows Phone-powered handset?

Anova Precision Cooker Helps You Cook Better With Windows Phone App

If you find it difficult to whip up something delicious in the kitchen, perhaps it is time to obtain a little bit of outside help, from that of an app, of course. Anova’s sous vide Precision Cooker will now feature Windows Phone support in the presence of an app, where you will be able to cook food in a more precise manner than ever before. Basically, the utensil will play nice with your smartphone over a Bluetooth connection, while you select your desired recipes and instructions on preparing food in the school of sous vide.

Obviously, the fact that you need a Bluetooth connection would also mean that your smartphone ought to be within range, and since the kitchen is not the driest place in the world, it would be nice to see a waterproof Windows Phone handset in the vein of the Galaxy S5 make its debut, and soon. The Anova utensil itself will remain immersed in the water bath, where the smartphone app lets you kick off the cooking process while Precision Cooker gets to work, heating up the water. All updates of the cooking process are transmitted via Bluetooth, so you would have maximum peace of mind if you happen to have a fully charged handset working alongside you. Expect the pre-order for the Anova Precision Cooker to retail for $179 with shipping set to commence this January 2015.

I find myself wondering if things fall out of fashion socially, is there still a market for them?

For example, products that are no longer on the shelves of stores. Because they are no longer available, does that mean people won’t covet the chance to buy old stock, or hold on to what few items they might still have?

Think about vinyl records. People collect them, but I can only assume that is a shrinking market. Kids today never had albums and therefore, have no connection to sway them to collect.

What about smoking paraphernalia? Is there any interest in vintage advertisements with the Marlboro Man, or would people collect ashtrays and just use them as candy dishes? Since smoking has been banned in so many cities, and gone are the days of it being chic to smoke, would anyone still have interest?

Actor Richard Gunn showed me that the interest is still there. When he’s not filming television series, Granite Flats, or wrapping his latest film, Dark Places with Charlize Theron, he is enjoying a “pipe dream” of his own.

Electronic cigarettes and hookah pipes are the way people smoke today. How did you become interested in pipes?

I was in Paris for the New Year in 2000 and I came across a pipe by a company named Butz Choquin It was called a church organ pipe. It was longer than a traditional pipe and had a small bowl. It’s called a “petite church” and had a blue stain to the wood. I just thought it was interesting. Come to find out, it’s pretty rare. I thought I better smoke it if I bought it. I tried it and I liked it. I always really liked the smell of pipe tobacco.

After that, I bought a couple more. I don’t buy a lot of them, because I like it to be a useful collection. I like to smoke all of them though I don’t smoke very often.

Some people collect utilitarian things, but only display them, and never use them. What’s your school of thought?

If I was buying brand new pipes just to display I would feel differently, but I like to use them. I buy estate pipes. Estate pipes are used, but they are thoroughly cleaned and graded before being sold. So smoking an estate pipe is not going to ruin its value. What makes an older pipe better than a new pipe is the wood it’s made from which is briarwood. The wood can be hundreds of years old when it was collected. This type of wood is very hard to come by. As briarwood ages, the quality increases. That’s why a lot of people are interest in estate pipes.

Do you have a favorite pipe in your collection?

You might be surprised to know my favorite pipe is not a brand name one. Some of the tobacco shops buy pipes that are unbranded from pipe makers and put their own brand on it. So I don’t know who made it. It’s a smaller bowl pipe and it takes about half and hour to smoke a bowl instead of 45 minutes like a normal pipe. Its fairly plain, but I just love it! I can carry it in my pocket and it smokes the best out of all of them.

One thing that’s very interesting about collecting pipes is their price. Some are very expensive. But you can also find some that are very reasonably priced and it doesn’t affect the smokeability of the pipe. There is something for every collector’s budget!

Is that the only thing you collect?

I happen to collect wristwatches as well. My favorite is a Gucci stainless steel watch. The parts that are stainless are a matte finish, not a high polish. The black dial is rectangular and it’s completely in line with the watchband. My stepfather, who has since passed away, gave me that watch. It’s a very good-looking watch and can be worn with something casual or dressy. I enjoy collecting them. I currently have about 40-50 in my collection.

Possible Nikon D810 Specs Revealed Ahead Of Announcement

Nikon D810 cameraAre you looking forward to the Nikon D810? For those unfamiliar, the Nikon D810 is the successor to the Nikon D800 that was launched a couple of years ago. According to the rumors, the Nikon D810 is expected to be announced on the 26th of June, meaning that we won’t have to wait too long to find out more about the device.

That being said, it looks like the specs of the D810 have leaked ahead of its announcement, thanks to UK website Expertreviews which published their review of the D810 ahead of schedule. The page has since been taken down, but for those interested in reading it you can check out the cached version for the details.

So, what does the Nikon D810 have in store for us? Well apparently the camera is expected to cost £2,700. This is the pricing for the UK since the website is based there, so for now we can’t be sure as to how much it will cost in the US. Moving on, the specs of the D810 includes a 36.3MP sensor, a 3.2-inch LCD screen with a split-screen mode, support for both CF and SDXC memory cards, and will be powered by the Nikon Expeed 4 image processing engine.

There will not be an optical low pass filter and will support an ISO range from 32-51,200 in extended mode, 64-12,800 in regular model. The camera will also feature an improved grip and redesign shutter with kevlar/carbon fibre-composite. This will supposedly help reduce shutter lag and will result in quieter operation. It also seems that there will not be support for 4K video, so if you wanted to use the D810 for 4K video capture, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

While it’s likely that the specs revealed by the UK website are accurate, we reckon you should still take it with a grain of salt for now, since Nikon has yet to make it official, but do check back with us later to see if there are any additional details that can be had.

LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live Pre-Orders Go Live On Google Play

lg g watch google io 2014 007 640x359During Google I/O earlier today, Google mentioned that both the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live would be available from the Google Play Store later today, and sure enough they are. Both devices have gone live on the Google Play Store and are available for pre-order, although both devices will be shipped at different times.

According to the Play Store listing, the LG G Watch will be priced at $229 and will begin shipping on the 3rd of July. As for the Samsung Gear Live, it has been priced $199 and will be shipping by the 8th of July, although with the Gear Live being priced $30 cheaper than the LG G Watch, it might end up being the more attractive option.

samsung gear live 640x403Both devices have their pros and cons. For example the Gear Live has a slightly smaller battery compared to the G Watch. However the Gear Live does have a slightly higher resolution and uses an AMOLED display, versus LG’s LCD IPS, so that’s worth consideration as well. However apart from that, the innards appear to be quite similar but will vary on size and weight.

As expected there is no mention of the Moto 360 because Google stated that the Moto 360 would only be arriving later in the summer, so if you were looking forward to the stylish Moto 360, you’ll have to wait a bit, although we still have no idea how much the device will cost. So, which watch are you planning on picking up?

Mystery Sony Handset Receives Certification, Could Be The Xperia Z3

Sony Xperia Z2 01 640x426Earlier this year, Sony unveiled the Xperia Z2 which was the successor the last year’s Xperia Z1. However if the rumors are to be believed, Sony could be working on its successor already, the Xperia Z3, which is rumored to be arriving in August with a metal frame. It remains to see if that will be happen, but so far we’ve seen a handful of Sony Xperia codenames where it is possible that one of them is pointing at the Xperia Z3.

That being said, a certain Sony handset has made an appearance on the TÜV Rheinland website which is used to test the safety and quality of devices. While the listing does not actual name the Xperia Z3 in question, some are speculating that this is a possibility. The model numbers that were listed includes the PM-0800-BV (D6603), PM-0804-BV (D6643), PM-0801-BV (D6616), PM-0806-BV (D6653), PM-0802-BV, PM-0803-BV, and PM-0807-BV.

According to Japanese website, Blog of Mobile, the numbers could represent the Xperia Z3, but once again we have nothing that can confirm it. However given that the Xperia Z2 had the model number D65xx, the fact that the listing is for the D66xx, it would not be a stretch of the imagination to think that it could be the successor of the Xperia Z2.

In any case this is pretty much all we have to go on for now, but at the very least it seems that there is a Sony device in testing and we guess we will just have to wait and see what exactly that device is. In the meantime what do you guys think? Could it be the Xperia Z3?

Two Top Veterans Affairs Officials Leave Agency, VA Says

By Mark Felsenthal

WASHINGTON, June 25 (Reuters) – The Department of Veterans Affairs on Wednesday announced the departure of two senior officials in the wake of a scandal over concealed and extensive delays in providing medical care for veterans.

Robert Jesse, the current acting undersecretary for health, will complete his four-year term as principal deputy undersecretary for health on July 2, the Veterans’ Affairs department said in a statement. In addition, Will Gunn, the department’s general counsel, has resigned.

The undersecretary for health leads the programs of the Veterans’ Health Administration, which runs the sprawling VA health system. Outrage erupted when it became known that officials hid that veterans were being made to wait for lengthy periods to get primary medical care and that in some cases those delays led to deaths.

At a hearing earlier this month, Jesse had to defend at a hearing of the House of Representatives Veterans Affairs Committee his timing in informing lawmakers about an outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease at a veterans’ hospital.

Carolyn Clancy, the agency’s assistant deputy undersecretary for health, will take his place and be named the interim undersecretary for health, the VA said.

“Dr. Clancy will be charged with the department’s top priority – getting veterans off of wait lists and in to see their doctors,” Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson said. “She will also lead our efforts on immediate, national reforms to accelerate access to care and restore trust among our veterans.”

Obama accepted the resignation of former VA Secretary Eric Shinseki last month over the scandal.

When news of delays first broke, Robert Petzel, the undersecretary for health at the time, stepped down.

The agency will conduct a search for a permanent replacement for the health undersecretary post, Gibson said. Obama has also pledged to name a new VA secretary.

Principal Deputy General Counsel Tammy Kennedy will serve as acting general counsel, the agency said.

Earlier this month the VA said an internal audit found more than 100,000 veterans had been subjected to a wait of 90 days or more for appointments at medical facilities nationwide.

It also found that staff at 76 percent of the facilities surveyed said they had been instructed at least once to misrepresent appointment data. Doctors at VA clinics in Phoenix have alleged that some 40 veterans died while waiting for care. (Reporting By Mark Felsenthal; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)

Microbusiness: Creating a Life That's More Than 'a Living'

I recently read about an unemployed, single mother who completed a two-week training course to become a certified nursing aide, an occupation listed as the “fastest-growing job in America.” The woman was hopeful that the certification will allow her to now make a living.

Ideally, the certification will bring employment opportunities, but, very likely, her job options will be slightly-more-than minimum wage, if at all, and won’t net enough income to allow her to move from a home that has sporadic electricity, and no running water.

Despite the Bureau of Labor Statistics report of May 2014 job gains, the nation’s unemployment rate held steady at 6.3 percent, which is compounded by new research findings that re-employment of the long-term unemployed is not necessarily indicative of a fresh start: many jobs pay significantly less than previous positions, are not steady, full-time, or permanent.

We support job training as a means to re-employ individuals (for those for whom training is accessible, affordable and feasible). However, we point to entrepreneurship as a more promising option to escape the bonds of unemployment. Entrepreneurship, microbusiness in particular, continues to appeal to millions of persons whom the labor market no longer serves.

Scores of unemployed persons have turned to entrepreneurship as a survival tactic, and created a job, or jobs, in the process. In 2011, when Lasenta Lewis-Ellis was downsized from her near-$100,000-per-year job earning more than $1,600 weekly, she attempted to help her husband care for their family of eight with her $270 weekly unemployment benefits. That plan failed, as did her employment search — having a master’s degree and being a doctoral candidate didn’t facilitate her search.

At a point Lasenta decided she wanted more, so she mustered up a measure of confidence, cashed out her 401K account and used $1,500 to start LLE Construction Group, LLC.

In its first year, LLE grossed $303,000, after being in business only five months in 2011. In 2012 the business grossed $685,000, and in 2013 the company grossed $1.1 million. To date, company revenues have increased by more than 263 percent.

Lasenta’s is a great success story, but not uncommon. AEO report data show microbusinesses, although small, in the aggregate, have a significant influence on job creation by contributing to the employment of 41.3 million individuals — this represents 31 percent of private sector employment. Lasenta hired her son to work for the company, and is training him to take over the business. She hires other employees seasonally and contractually.

Microbusinesses create plethora economic impacts, and create gains for families that cut across racial, ethnic, and gender lines. These enterprises are a practical option for persons of color (like Lasenta), unemployed persons (like Lasenta), and persons in the 50+ age group to attain self-sufficiency amidst a mercurial labor market, and as long-term job stability becomes more elusive.

Entrepreneurship allows individuals to escape poverty by giving them a vantage point of the economy other than “from the bottom up” — we should champion it as a means for individuals to realize self-sufficiency and financial autonomy, and to make more than just a living.
