Microsoft Launches Nokia X2 Running Android

Nokia X2 from Microsoft with Android OSNokia announced on Tuesday the release of the Nokia X2 Dual SIM smartphone. The X2 is the successor to the X1 with more power and the intention of delivering a reasonably prices smartphone to the “next billion” people according to Microsoft.

The device will sell for around $135 USD but most interesting is that the device will continue to run the Android OS despite the purchase of Microsoft who themselves have been struggling to keep up with their own operating system in the smartphone market. Microsoft stated that despite the phone having the competing OS, it will have access to some Microsoft services including Skype and the OneDrive cloud storage service.

This move by Microsoft seems counter-intuitive but also can serve as a good opportunity to highlight the differences between the phone OS platform and services that are available, bringing potentially more business to Microsoft services from other platforms.

LeapPad 3 & LeapPad Ultra XDI Kids Tablets Announced

31500 PR02 640x640There are some who might question the logic in giving a child a tablet, but we guess better they play with their own tablet than risk damaging your more expensive one, right? Not to mention children tablets usually come with safety features that allows kids to browse the web safely and under supervision, so that’s a lot of parents’ minds.

That being said, the folks at LeapFrog have recently unveiled a couple of new tablets aimed at children in mind. The tablets are the LeapPad 3 and the LeapPad Ultra XDI. These are successor to the LeapPad 2 and the LeapPad Ultra. As expected with a tablet being aimed at children, LeapFrog will be introducing what they’re calling Web-safe WiFi.

31500 LF02v2 HREssentially what this means that the built-in browsers in the tablets will use the LeapSearch website to perform age-appropriate searches on the internet. This means that unless they have been approved by LeapFrog’s education experts, they will not show up on search results. Parents will also be able to access the company’s Leap Connect to download new apps for their child.

31500 PR07 640x640The tablets themselves aren’t much to shout about in terms of hardware specs, but both have been built with special impact zones that will help insulate and protect the tablet when it is dropped. The screens are also shatter-safe so in the event it does break, pieces of glass won’t be flying around which could hit your child in the eye.

The LeapPad 3 will be priced at $99.99 and will be available on the 16th of July for pre-order where it will be hitting the shelves in August. As for the LeapPad Ultra XDI, it is priced at $129.99 and will arrive in the Fall of 2014.

iPhone 6 Could Feature Optical Image Stabilization, Analysts Predict

iphone 5s review 019 640x426There are some who do not realize this, but optical image stabilization in a camera is an extremely useful feature. This allows users to snap photos in low-light situations without too much camera shake, and it also allows for video capture by holding the camera in your hand where the movement from your hands or body will be reduced as well.

This is also a feature that has made its way into high-end smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the LG G3, but could it also be making its way into the iPhone 6? While it remains to be seen if it will, a new prediction from Pacific Crest Securities analysts, John Vinh and Kevin Chen, seems to think that it will.

In fact they go on to state that optical image stabilization will be a feature that could be limited to the 5.5-inch version of the iPhone 6. The analysts claim that optical image stabilization technology will cost anywhere between $4-5 more than a traditional focus component, and could be used to help differentiate between the 4.7-inch model and 5.5-inch model, apart from the obvious difference in screen sizes.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is rumored to enter into production this July. Both the rumored 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models are expected to begin production at the same time, so word has it that both phones will be launched simultaneously, although supply of the 5.5-inch model is said to be constrained at the early stages due to it being a more complicated device.

Nokia Vela, Athena, Libra Codenames Revealed

nokia 630 635 preview 004 640x360Earlier today, Microsoft announced the Nokia X2 which while technically is Nokia’s fourth Android handset, it will be Microsoft’s first ever since they have officially bought over Nokia. That being said, we expect that Microsoft probably has additional Nokia devices up their sleeves, and now thanks to a post by @evleaks, potential Nokia codenames have surfaced.

According to @evleaks, the codenames for the potential Nokia handsets includes the Vela, Athena, and Libra. At this point in time it is really anyone’s guess as to what these devices might be about. They could refer to low-end handsets, or they could refer to high-end devices. After all shouldn’t it be around that time when we can expect successors to devices like the Lumia 1020? It might still be a bit too early for the Lumia 1520’s successor, but who’s to say that isn’t in the works?

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but since Nokia has lineups like the Nokia X, Nokia Asha, and Nokia Lumia, it’s really anyone’s guess as to what those codenames might refer to. What do you guys think? Logically what could be the next batch of handsets that Microsoft might be getting ready to announce?

BlackBerry Hints At Full HD Devices Arriving In The Future

bbfullhd 640x359As it stands, the BlackBerry Z30 is the Canadian company’s largest phone at the moment. It sports a 5-inch display, which we guess is “standard” when it comes to Android devices, but unfortunately it only uses a 720p HD display. While some users might not be able to notice any differences, it is definitely not as sharp as a 5-inch Full HD display, like the one of the HTC One M8.

However could BlackBerry be getting ready to launch devices with Full HD displays in the future? Well that’s what it seems to be hinted at during a recent webinar. In a recent webinar that BlackBerry hosted for its OS 10.3 SDK, they introduced some updates for future devices that might have a high PPI count.

They revealed some numbers which based on basic extrapolation and calculation by the folks at N4BB, has yielded the possibility that the highest-resolution that will be supported in the future will be Full HD 1920×1080. This is also based on the assumption that BlackBerry will be maintaining aspect ratios like the BlackBerry Z30.

It is unclear when BlackBerry could be getting ready to launch devices with Full HD displays, but if this is an area that you felt BlackBerry was lacking in, then it is something worth keeping an eye out for.

Fernando Sanchez Arellano, Tijuana Drug Cartel Leader, Arrested In Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The head of the once-mighty Tijuana-based Arellano Felix drug cartel was arrested at a home while watching the telecast of Mexico’s soccer team playing in the World Cup, federal officials said Tuesday.

Federal police chief Monte Alejandro Rubido said Fernando Sanchez Arellano was detained in the border city of Tijuana on Monday and was expected to be brought to Mexico City sometime Tuesday. Sanchez Arellano had $100,000 in cash when he was arrested, Rubido said, but gave no other details at a news briefing at which he didn’t take questions.

Journalists were shown photographs of Sanchez Arellano in a green soccer jersey and with his cheeks painted with green, white and red, the colors of the Mexican flag.

But he couldn’t celebrate Mexico’s 3 -1 victory over Croatia because he was arrested by soldiers before the game ended, a federal official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to talk to the media.

Sanchez Arellano inherited leadership of the Arellano Felix cartel from his uncle, Javier Arellano Felix, who was arrested by the U.S. Coast Guard in international waters off Mexico’s Baja California in 2006. The uncle later was sentenced in San Diego to 40 years in federal prison.

Within two years, a renegade lieutenant, Teodoro Garcia Simental, made a power play and set off a bloodbath that turned Tijuana into one of Mexico’s most violent cities, plagued by daytime shootouts, beheadings and mutilated corpses hanging from freeway bridges.

Sanchez Arellano, known as “The Engineer,” was badly weakened after his rival was arrested in 2010, which created an opening for the Sinaloa cartel to quietly gain control of Tijuana’s underworld and its coveted smuggling corridor to San Diego. The Sinaloa cartel has made its mark in the area with cross-border drug tunnels, large-scale smuggling of methamphetamine at San Diego border crossings and marijuana-laden boats that motor up the Pacific coast to California.

In 2013, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration included Sanchez Arellano on a poster of the six most influential drug traffickers in that region but U.S. authorities were more concerned about rising Sinaloa cartel lieutenants. Gary Hill, an assistant DEA special agent in charge in San Diego, said in an interview at the time that Sanchez Arellano was “almost like a ghost.”

“As we see it, the Sinaloa cartel has the upper hand,” Hill said.

Mexican authorities have tried several times to grab drug traffickers when they had their guard down while attending parties but it hasn’t always worked.

In 2009, federal forces raided a party in the central state of Morelos attended by drug cartel leader Arturo Beltran Leyva, but he escaped. Marines cornered him days later at an apartment building in Cuernavaca, where he died in an hours-long shootout.

Rival drug traffickers also have taken advantage of parties to go after enemies. Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, the eldest brother of the Tijuana clan, was killed last October by a gunman dressed as a clown at a party in the resort city of Los Cabos.

Study Shows 'Cut The Rope' Video Game Improves Executive Function In Adults

Cut The Rope video gamePsychologists who study the impact of video games on the human brain
have an interest in how games can be utilized to reinforce certain
everyday thinking skills. Assistant Professor of Psychology at Nanyang
Technological University in Singapore, Michael D. Patterson, is
considered an expert in the psychology of video games.  He has
previously identified certain thinking skills enhanced by individual
games, but the game ‘Cut The Rope’ is the first one, according to Patterson, that shows evidence of improving ‘executive function’ in adult gamers.
