Everyone on Facebook looks like they’re having a great time. Fun adventures, deep romances, amazing jobs. It’s enough to make you feel inadequate, but it’s also a lie. Nobody is really as happy as their Facebook wall claims, as this piercing short from HigtonBrothers confirms.
Modernist architecture photographs well, thanks to all those clean lines make for striking shots. But I’ll be damned if modernist architecture doesn’t look even better in the artwork of artist Lucy Williams, who takes a mixed-media palate—balsa wood and Plexiglas, wool embroidery and acrylic paint, cork and paper—and transforms it into near-perfect reproductions of real-world sites.
Bobby Womack: Across 110th Street
Posted in: Today's ChiliDid you know that Bobby Womack plays a right-handed guitar upside down? That’s just one of the many nuggets you can cull from the most excellent interview the music legend gave to Soundcheck back in January that aired again yesterday.
Web-based apps are supposed to let you easily hop between devices without missing a beat, but that hasn’t been the case with iWork for iCloud — you’ve had to open files, tweak settings and otherwise break your flow. The experience should be much…
If you thought product placement in TV was bad enough, a new Apple patent might just make it worse. The company has been awarded a patent that will discover what brands might be on the show you’re watching, then send a push notification to your smartphone or tablet giving you more info about those products. It could even offer a … Continue reading
Mario Kart 8 Review
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhat do you get when you cross a turtle shell with a banana? If you happen to know, then odds are you have some seriously awkward life experiences, or you haven’t given Nintendo’s iconic racing series a chance yet. If not, then the eighth go around of Mario Kart wouldn’t be a terrible place to start. The ability to save and upload replays, a touch of anti-gravity, and a greater […]

'Teen Wolf' 401: The Dark Moon
Posted in: UncategorizedMy favorite show about werewolves in high school returns this week for its fourth season (I said high school, not Bon Temps, True Blood fans — simmer down), and it’s going to be interesting to see how Teen Wolf plays out with some key players missing.
I loved the Hardy Boys-like opening sequence this week featuring Lydia and Stiles but why do club scenes always have to be SO unrealistically lit up? My minor gripes aside, it will be interesting to see if Stiles having a viable romantic love-interest will take some of the romantic tension away from his friendship with Lydia. If it does it might allow the two of them to form an even stronger bond.
Two months have passed since the end of Season Three and Allison Argent’s death. Ignoring the fact that a girl who spent most of her life as a coyote probably wouldn’t be such a great dancer right off the jump, I’m actually liking the addition of Malia and Kira as regular cast-members. I’m of the school that thinks cast shake-ups can potentially breathe new life into a series, I’m just not sure that Teen Wolf really needed one just three seasons in. Losing Crystal Reed’s Allison and Daniel Sharman’s Isaac Lahey is a bitter pill to swallow, but these new characters may help fill the vacancy in our hearts… I’m going to hold out hope.
Speaking of fresh meat, I think new-baddie Araya lacks the soulless creepiness of Gerard. But as far as leaders of blood-thirsty, supernatural-hunting families go she leads the Calaveras with a ruthlessness that reminds me a bit of the Argents. What some have dubbed the “worst-kept secret in TV” this year, Jill Wagner returns as Kate Argent, after seemingly dying she’s resurrected as a Werejaguar. If Kate’s transformation isn’t a big enough surprise, she may have been holding Baby-Derek hostage!
During the official aftershow Wolf Watch, creator Jeff Davis revealed that he titled the episode “Dark Moon” because it’s “a time of grieving, a time of reflection, when the moon is least visible in the sky.” Davis also dashed the hopes of Alison-fans everywhere holding out hope for a mystical return:
I think it’s important for a show like this to experience these kinds of struggles, for teenagers especially. You do lose people in life, and in our characters’ lives actually, it’s a way for them to graduate towards adulthood.
I don’t know that I’d make our friends in Beacon Hills go through this level of tragedy in order to grow up, but I’m willing to give Davis the benefit of the doubt as he’s yet to steer me wrong.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney offered an extremely morose prediction about the country’s future on Tuesday.
Asked on the Hugh Hewitt radio show whether he believes the United States could survive the decade without another attack on the homeland, Cheney said, “I doubt it.”
“I think there will be another attack and next time, I think it’s likely to be far deadlier than the last one,” he added. “Imagine what would happen if somebody could smuggle a nuclear device, put it in a shipping container and drive it down the Beltway outside Washington D.C.”
“If that were to happen, do you see the government reconstituting? Because it would have to be military rule for a period of time at least,” Hewitt said.
Cheney described his role creating a national security directive in the aftermath of terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, so that federal agencies would be able to continue performing essential functions under various circumstances.
“It was very, very important and we operated and actually trained under circumstances of how we would go about providing for a government to survive if we’re having nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union falling all over the country,” he said.
The former vice president also made news recently for accusing President Barack Obama of abandoning Iraq to Islamic militants. In a Wall Street Journal column he wrote with his daughter, Liz, Cheney proclaimed — perhaps with a lack of self-awareness — “Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many.”

Occupy Protesters Arrested For Satirizing Police Repression Reach $22,000 Settlement
Posted in: Today's ChiliNEW YORK — Two Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested in May 2012 over a piece of street theater meant to satirize the New York Police Department have reached a $22,000 settlement with New York City, they announced on Tuesday.
Bicycling activists Keegan Stephan and Barbara Ross were arrested as they were protesting the NYPD’s practice of arresting Occupy Wall Street demonstrators who filmed the police at work. Dressed as comic exaggerations of cops, they were melodramatically ordering fellow bicyclists with the cycling collective Time’s Up! to stop filming them.
“This was during the height of the suppression of Occupy Wall Street. The police were cracking down, especially on filming the police, so this was a theatrical way to draw attention to the fact that it is totally legal to film the police,” said Stephan.
The joke went downhill when actual police officers showed up. Initially, Stephan and Ross were told they were being arrested for impersonating police officers. The charges against them were later downgraded to reckless endangerment and eventually dropped.
Their arrests were caught on tape:
“It was blue Dickies and a blue Dickies jacket, and I pasted the letters ‘NYPD’ on the back. … I don’t think anyone seeing me in a double-long cycle, covered in cardboard, was going to think I was a police officer,” recalled Stephan. Just two months earlier, Stephan noted, Lt. Daniel J. Albano of the police department’s legal bureau had actually complimented Ross on wearing the same costume.
Stephan and Ross sued the city for false arrest. They received the monetary offer in March. The settlement continues a pattern under New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) of making peace with former Occupiers over the large-scale arrests during the movement’s heyday.
New York City Law Department spokesman Nick Paolucci said in a statement that “settling this case was in the best interest of all parties.”
The counterfeit cops were represented by the law firm Stecklow Cohen & Thompson, which had previously hired Stephan to publicize a $583,000 settlement in a separate lawsuit against the NYPD.
“It really is echoing these last few settlements for Occupy Wall Street,” said Stephan of his own settlement. “The police need to stop falsely arresting people who are exercising their First Amendment rights. If we have skilled lawyers on our side, they’re going to have to keep paying, and the people of New York are going to have to demand that they stop doing this.”
Stephan, an organizer with the street safety group Right of Way, noted the irony of being charged with “reckless endangerment” for riding his bike when the city rarely brings such charges against motorists who kill pedestrians.
He said that after legal fees, his share of the settlement works out to about $7,500. His plans for the money: “I’m gonna buy a new bicycle and keep giving ’em hell.”
Get Organized… from the Road!
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe women entrepreneurs are busy — it’s a fact. These days, that’s the nature of the game. But taking your business to the next level might be easier than you think. After all, who needs more stress?
When you’re traveling and trying to nail down new business, you don’t want to leave your current customers in the dust or feeling unappreciated. However, you certainly don’t want those potential new customers to end up suffering from a pitch cut short or a mispronounced name. So, what do you do?
You get with the mobile program.
Business owners newer to travel may be skeptical, but seasoned traveling professionals know what to do when it comes to staying organized on the road. My first recommendation? Use apps. Check out this suite of professional tools that will help you keep your finger on the pulse of your business, even on the go.
Amp Up Your Apps for Customer Satisfaction
Thanks to the prevalence of smartphones and tablets, the time is prime for business owners to go mobile. There are literally iPhone and Android apps for almost anything nowadays. And even if there isn’t an app for something you want, you could even create your own! (But that’s a subject for another article.)
Tracking and interacting with potential and current customers while on the go is always a challenge. For example, what do you do if you need to complete a customer sale on the fly? You don’t want to put that customer off, lest they decide not to buy from you. Hint: download and use Square. It’s the easiest way out there to accept credit cards on the run. It’s so simple, you can make a customer sale right from your smartphone, with little more than a tap and a swipe. It’s not just convenient; it’s secure. Credit card information is encrypted the moment you swipe. Request your free Square Reader and start taking mobile payments today.
Is your CRM mobile friendly? Never miss a beat with your customer base with Insightly CRM mobile access. Not only can you download and use the Insightly app on any smartphone or tablet, you can access all these great small business CRM features from either the mobile version on your smartphone or from your computer, making the experience synonymous no matter what device you use to log in. (Pro tip: A new version of the Insightly iOS app is right around the corner.)
DRIVE Your Success Home
Sick of dealing with multiple file versions, countless emailed documents, and messy revisions? Keep all your important docs in one place with Google Drive. Google Drive allows you to share documents with your team members and clients from anywhere in the world. Use the “See revision history” tool to review everyone’s changes to your dynamic documents (and to revert to an older version in case of error)!
Need to have an in-depth group conversation? Try GoToMeeting. This cool conference app allows you to have full-fledged virtual meetings on your iPad, smartphone or any Android device. Seriously, it’s a cinch… with all the bells and whistles you need to make any meeting a success. A cheaper option is join.me. This nifty mobile communication tool lets you share screens with others or join an online meeting at lightning fast speeds.
“Remember Everything.” How good does THAT sound? That’s the tagline of the handy Evernote app. Keep voice or written notes, store pictures of business cards, receipts and itineraries — nearly any type of note format you can think of — and keep it all organized so you can easily find everything later.
Between staying in touch, staying productive and keeping everything organized, your business should be in good shape, and so should you — even on the road. You don’t have to use ALL of the apps I’ve mentioned, but dive in and start looking around to see what suits you and your business best. I’ll tell you one thing: when I’m on the go (which is often) I don’t know where I’d be without my apps!
