3D-Weaving Turns a Single Thread Into Shoe Soles and Stab-Proof Vests

3D-Weaving Turns a Single Thread Into Shoe Soles and Stab-Proof Vests

At first glance it looks like these shoes are shod with two strategically shaped Top Ramen bricks. Delicious, perhaps, but c’mon—too crunchy for underfoot! The flexible soles were actually made with a 3D weaving machine designed by a graduate at London’s Royal College of Art, by layering a single, continuous thread in complementary patterns, one on top of the other.

Microsoft’s Smartwatch Not Yet Ready, Ties In With HealthVault [Rumor]

microsoft logoWhen it comes to wearables, many tech giants have unveiled their efforts. For example we’ve seen offerings from the likes of Samsung, LG, Motorola, Acer, Huawei, and Qualcomm, just to name a few. Apple has been rumored to be working on a wearable of their own, which is why it isn’t surprising to hear that Microsoft might be interested as well.

There have been rumors that Microsoft could be planning their own wearable, but now thanks to a source a VentureBeat, they have confirmed that this will be true. Apparently the device will be linked with Microsoft’s HealthVault, a feature which has been in development since 2007. For those wondering about HealthVault, it is somewhat similar to Apple’s HealthKit which basically gathers health-related data about the user into a single location.

However we should point out that HealthKit has been in the works since 2007, so perhaps Microsoft might have the edge in terms of releasing a more polished final product. Unfortunately VentureBeat’s sources went on to claim that it would be months before Microsoft actually releases its health wearable, so we’re not sure if this means it will see a late 2014 release of early 2015 release, but it’ll definitely be worth keeping an eye out for.

We have also previously heard that Microsoft’s smartwatch could be compatible with iOS and Android devices as well, which is a nice change since we expect that Apple’s iWatch will most likely be an iOS exclusive. Naturally Microsoft declined to share additional information about HealthVault or its rumored smartwatch.

BlackBerry Passport Shown Off On Video

The BlackBerry Windermere was a handset that had been rumored about for quite sometime, before it was officially unveiled last week by BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, who revealed the device as the BlackBerry Passport. From what we can see, it certainly looked like the Windermere in terms of its design.

The handset featured a more square-ish display and unlike previous QWERTY BlackBerry handsets, the Passport only featured a 3-row keyboard design. Well if you’re interested in checking out the BlackBerry Passport in action, the folks at CrackBerry have uploaded a video onto YouTube where a quick demonstration of the BlackBerry Passport was caught on video.

The demonstration was carried out by BlackBerry’s CEO himself, John Chen, where he explained why the BlackBerry Passport is better than the competition. He states that phones these days are starting to get too big, and that customers are starting to becoming “fatigued” by phones that are longer, taller, and wider, and that the Passport’s 1:1 aspect ratio, which he also claims is the size of an actual passport, will be better for use.

Unfortunately while Chen did play around with the phone’s display in the video, he did not touch on the keyboard, which if the rumors are to be believed could feature support for gestures, which was what made BlackBerry decide to remove the function key toolbelt and make it a 3-row keyboard instead.

Apple Working On Additional Language Support For Siri

siri imageApple has been quietly working over the past few years and are making various improvements to Siri. However while Siri might be more adept at recognizing different words and might be slightly faster at processing them, this hardly matters if your native language isn’t supported, right? Now previously we knew that Apple was working on language support for Arabic, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, and Danish.

Now according to new job listings posted by Apple, Apple could soon be adding support for at least three more languages: Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Thai. Combine that with the languages we mentioned earlier and we have basically 9 new languages that should be coming to Siri in the future. However Apple did note during WWDC and during their iOS 8 presentation that there would be new dictation languages users could look forward to.

As it stands, Apple lists the current languages that are supported by Siri, which includes: United States (English, Spanish); United Kingdom (English); Australia (English); France (French); Germany (German); Japan (Japanese); Canada (English, Canadian French); China (Mandarin); Hong Kong (Cantonese); Italy (Italian); Korea (Korean); Mexico (Spanish); Spain (Spanish); Switzerland (Italian, French, German); Taiwan (Mandarin).

No word on when Apple will be adding support for the languages we mentioned earlier, but some of them have been in the works since 2012 so here’s hoping that at least some of them will make its way into iOS 8’s release later this year.

Alleged Moto X+1 Press Rendering Leaked

xplus1We have been hearing rumors about the Moto X+1 for a while now. The handset is said to be the successor to the Moto X and previously we had seen alleged leaked videos which shows off some of the phone. Now thanks to the ever-reliable @evleaks, a press rendering of the Moto X+1 has surfaced, as you can see in the image above.

However as mentioned by @evleaks, this press rendering shows off the Moto X+1 encased in a protective shell, so the actual design of the phone still remains something of a mystery, at least for now. It is also quite hard to tell the screen size from the photo alone, but last we heard, the Moto X+1 would feature a 1080p Full HD display, which is a welcome upgrade from the Moto X’s 720p HD display.

Also according to previous rumors, the Moto X+1 is expected to feature the same customization options as the Moto X, except that there will be a new addition thrown into the mix in the form of leather. Right now Moto X users only get to choose from various colors as well as wooden backplate options, but with the Moto X+1, you could get a leather finish which might end up resembling the faux-leather of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

FCC Filing Confirms Moto 360′s Wireless Charging Feature

moto360 1 640x479The full specs of the Motorola’s upcoming smartwatch, the Moto 360, has been shrouded in semi-secrecy. Motorola did tease that the device would feature a “secret” charging method, which was later revealed to be wireless charging via magnetic induction. Now if you were still skeptical, how about an FCC filing to help clear any doubts?

If you answered in the affirmative, you might be interested to learn that a wireless charger by Motorola had been recently spotted at the FCC. This pretty much confirms what we had heard earlier, and we’re guessing that this is most likely that “secret” charging method that Motorola was teasing us about.

The listing also goes on to reveal that the charger was designed for use with the Moto 360 and that it will support the Wireless Consortium’s protocol, which is the Qi standard. We’re not sure if this means that it will play nicely with any Qi wireless charger you might have lying around the house, or if it’s basically a dock designed specifically for the Moto 360 in mind.

Wireless charging can come in handy with smartwatches, since you would not have to keep plugging it and unplugging it to charge, Instead at the end of the day, you can just slip the watch off your wrist and place it on the charging pad to allow it to charge, much like how you would leave your normal watch on the table or in your drawer.

Of course we’re hoping that a standard charger would be part of the device’s features as well, since it would make it easier to bring around with you, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully we will learn more about the Moto 360’s future at Google I/O which will be kicking off later this week.
