Israel Launches Airstrikes In Gaza After Rockets Reportedly Fired, Bodies Of Teens Found In West Bank

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military found the bodies of three missing teenagers on Monday just over two weeks after they were abducted in the West Bank — a grim discovery that ended a frantic search that led to Israel’s largest ground operation in the Palestinian territory in nearly a decade and drew Israeli threats of retaliation.

“Hamas is responsible and Hamas will pay,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed, referring to the Islamic militant group that Israel has accused of carrying out the kidnappings. The teenagers “were kidnapped and murdered in cold blood by human animals,” the Israeli leader said as he convened an emergency meeting of his Security Cabinet.

The three-hour session ended after midnight without any decisions, and officials were expected to resume deliberations on Tuesday.

Early Tuesday, Israel carried out an especially intense series of airstrikes in Gaza, saying it had struck 34 targets across the Hamas-controlled territory. The military said the airstrikes were a response to a barrage of 18 rockets fired into Israel since late Sunday.

“The IDF will continue to act in order to restore the peaceful living to the civilians of the state of Israel. The Hamas terror organization and its extensions are solely responsible for any terror activities emanating from the Gaza Strip,” said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman.

There were no further details on the targets, but in recent weeks Israel has repeatedly targeted launch sites and weapons storage areas in similar attacks. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The kidnapping episode has put Netanyahu in a difficult position. With a public enraged over the deaths, the Israeli leader has widespread support to strike Hamas. But after a two-week crackdown against the group, he could have a tough time finding new targets. He is also facing international calls for restraint.

Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Fraenkel, a 16-year-old with dual Israeli-American citizenship, disappeared June 12 while hitchhiking home from the Jewish seminaries where they were studying near the West Bank city of Hebron. Despite the dangers, hitchhiking is common among Israelis traveling in and out of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

In an operation codenamed “Brother’s Keeper,” Israel dispatched thousands of troops across the West Bank in search of the youths, closed roads in the Hebron area and arrested some 400 Hamas operatives throughout the territory. The search ended Monday afternoon with the discovery of the bodies under a pile of rocks in a field north of Hebron.

Israel has identified two well-known Hamas operatives from Hebron as the primary suspects. The men, Marwan Qawasmeh and Amer Abu Aisheh, remain on the run, and military officials said the search for them would continue.

The search for the teens became a national obsession. Israeli media delivered round-the-clock updates, top officials held daily televised briefings and Israelis held prayer vigils. The mothers of the three teens became public figures as they campaigned for their sons’ return, at one point traveling to Geneva to address the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

News of their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief late Monday. Large crowds of supporters rushed to the homes of the families in the central Israeli towns of Nof Ayalon and Elad, and the West Bank settlement of Talmon, while supporters lit memorial candles and prayed.

Large crowds gathered in Tel Aviv’s central Rabin Square, and at the West Bank junction where the youths were abducted, singing songs, praying and lighting candles shaped in the names of the youths or the Jewish Star of David.

“All of Israel bows its head today,” said President Shimon Peres.

Thousands of Israelis have died in wars and militant attacks over the years, and Israel has grappled with the kidnappings of soldiers by militant groups in the past. But the ages of the victims, and the fact that they were unarmed civilians, seemed to strike a raw nerve. Security officials have long feared that civilian hitchhikers in the West Bank could make easy targets.

Beyond identifying the suspected kidnappers, Israel has not publicly provided evidence proving the involvement of Hamas, which has praised the kidnappings but not claimed responsibility for them. It is also not clear whether the kidnappers received orders from higher-ups or acted on their own.

Still, Hamas frequently encourages its members to try to kidnap Israelis, believing hostages could be used to win the release of militants detained in Israeli prisons. Tensions had also been high since the shooting deaths in May of two Palestinian teens during a stone-throwing clash with Israeli security forces.

News of the Israeli teens’ deaths generated condemnations from around the world. Pope Francis, who in May visited the region, shared in the families’ “unspeakable pain,” said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

In Washington, President Barack Obama sent his “deepest and heartfelt condolences” to the families. “As a father, I cannot imagine the indescribable pain that the parents of these teenage boys are experiencing,” he said. Yet he urged “all parties” to refrain from steps that could further destabilize the situation.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a similar condemnation of the “heinous crime,” but also urged the sides to “refrain from any actions that could further escalate this highly tense situation.”

Israel’s options may be limited. After a two-week crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank, few major targets remain there. Hamas had already been weakened by seven years of pressure by Israel and the forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli troops seemed to find very little during the latest crackdown.

Israel could turn its attention toward the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Israel has been battling a surge in rocket fire from Gaza and could step up the intensity of its reprisals.

It also might consider stronger political action. Netanyahu has urged Abbas to disband a unity government he recently formed with Hamas’ backing. The Israeli leader will almost certainly step up the pressure on Abbas.

Israeli media have also said that Israel might consider deporting Hamas leaders in the West Bank to Gaza.

In Gaza, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri warned Israel against any broad offensive. Gaza militants possess thousands of rockets, and would almost certainly unleash heavy barrages at Israel if Israel attacks.

“Netanyahu should know that threats don’t scare Hamas, and if he wages a war on Gaza, the gates of hell will open on him,” he said.

Abbas has condemned the kidnappings, and his forces coordinated closely with Israel during the search for the teens. But he has so far refused Israeli calls to terminate the unity government, which ended a seven-year rift with Hamas. He says his new Cabinet remains committed to his political program.

The Palestinian president scheduled a meeting of the Palestinian leadership on Tuesday to discuss the events, his spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh said.

Abdallah Abdallah, an adviser to Abbas, said the Palestinians regretted the loss of life.

“We want peace to be created in this part of the world so no mother or no family will be bereaved for the loss of their beloved ones, Palestinian or Israeli,” he said.

Razer’s Project Christine Does Not Look “Entirely Promising” Right Now

razer christine gallery 02Earlier this year, Razer unveiled a pretty cool concept called Project Christine. For those who might have missed our coverage, Project Christine is essentially a modular PC concept, where users can swap parts in and out at ease. This is compared to current PC building where users need to know where to slot in parts, and how to connect those parts to their power supply and so on.

It’s not the most difficult thing in the world, but we guess there are some out there who aren’t very technologically savvy. That being said, Project Christine was facing some challenges from OEMs who weren’t that enthused about coming on board. This was back in March and now that we’re in July, it seems that Razer is still facing some issues, claiming that it does not look particularly promising at the moment.

This is according to Razer’s CEO, Min-Liang Tan, who in an interview with TechRadar wrote, “We’ve had conversationis with OEMs. It’s not entirely promising right now because OEMs are excited about pushing products and not really innovating on that front.” However Tan adds that it is not all doom and gloom, and that Razer is hoping to make some announcements by the end of the year.

“We’ve had good conversations. We’ll have announcements through the end of the year. We’re hoping to get two to three OEM partners on board.” Whether or not OEMs get on board Project Christine remains to be seen, but we have to admit that this is a project that we’d like to see made a reality. After all if the Razer’s Project Fiona, a.k.a the Razer Edge Pro could be made a reality, we don’t see why Project Christine can’t as well.

1Password With Touch ID Integration Demonstrated On Video

When Apple first announced the iPhone 5s and introduced Touch ID, they claimed that the feature would be closed off to third-party developers. It seemed like a pity since we can only imagine the potential the feature has, but at the same time we can appreciate the security concerns Apple has if they opened their doors.

However come iOS 8, Apple announced several changes that they would be making and one of them was opening up Touch ID to developers. Well if you’re wondering how developers and apps will take advantage of Touch ID, a short Vine video has surfaced which shows Touch ID being used in AgileBits’ 1Password.

For those unfamiliar with 1Password, it’s basically an app that stores your passwords for you. However to access the master list of passwords, you will have to enter a main password, and in this case, Touch ID can be used as an alternative to entering your main password. It certainly makes things a lot easier and fluid.

1Password will also make use of app extensions introduced in iOS 8 which will allow the app to enter passwords into websites automatically, as opposed to having to use the in-app browser. In any case it seems pretty convenient, but what do you guys think?

Buy Now Buttons Appear In Twitter App, Hints At Twitter Commerce

fancybuynowTwitter has been used by all sorts of people, ranging from people who just want to share their thoughts, to huge corporations who use Twitter to share announcements, updates, new product launches and so on. The typical process used by companies usually involve a link to their website where users can make their purchase, but wouldn’t it be much more convenient to buy within Twitter itself?

Well thanks to several screenshots (pictured above) obtained by Re/code, it seems like that could be happening in the near future. As you can see in the screenshots above, it shows Twitter posts for products with a “Buy Now” button attach to them. Clicking the button apparently does nothing, but Re/code was informed that before this, the button would have taken them to a checkout page.

It should be pointed out that the products in question are being shared from a shopping app called Fancy, which according to an earlier report by Re/code, was speculated to be working with Twitter to roll out this shopping feature. However that was back in January, so we guess the project has been well underway for the past several months.

Neither Twitter nor Fancy have commented on the feature, but given that the screenshots were spotted in the Twitter app, perhaps we might not have to wait too long to see its implementation. In the meantime what do you guys think of this new feature? Would the ability to purchase products directly within Twitter itself be a useful feature you’d like to see?

Sensory Releases Combined Vision and Voice Authentication For Mobile Devices

Sensory has been developing speech recognition software solutions for the past 20 years and I had the opportunity to meet CEO Todd Mozer for a demo of TrulySecure, its  new technology that enables biometric authentication for Smartphones, tablets and PCs. Sensory TrulySecure combines voice and face recognition to unlock applications on mobile devices, and it can be used by OEMs to unlock the device itself.

Sensory powers voice recognition in a number of devices, including wearables and smart watches, Todd Mozer could tell me that Samsung, Pantech, LG and Motorola are current customers, but he could not provide specific devices or applications that his company has developed for those manufacturers. Todd provided a demo of voice commands for wearables developed by Sensory, check out the video demo at the end of the article.

According to Sensory’s CEO, TrulySecure’s biometric authentication on the device offers better accuracy at a lower cost than the current fingerprint reading solutions, in fact, a fingerprint sensor with its software can cost from $5 to $10 per device, which is a high price in the consumer electronics manufacturing world.

Combining face and voice recognition enables a higher level of security, additionally, TrulySecure runs exclusively on the device and not in the cloud, which is the other benefits for consumers who do not like to have their biometric information stored in the cloud.

TrulySecure demonstrations and SDKs are now available to qualified developers. For more information visit the website: http://sensoryinc.com/

In the video demo below, you can see that Sensory provides fast and accurate speech recognition for wearable devices, and, according to Todd Mozer, the software solution is also low power.

The Mind Behind WorldStarHipHop

It goes without saying that WorldStarHipHop is one of the web’s most controversial sites. The user-submitted content can give you pause, or even reconsider the meal that you were about to have.

Um, it’s a video aggregator — what do you expect?

Since we’re on the topic of video aggregation, yes, some of the videos don’t exactly show people of any walk of life at their best — people have free will to make choices every day. It’s unfortunate that some of those videos are made by people, but it’s mostly for nothing more than entertainment and shock value. The same kind of shock value that is found on user-submitted content at YouTube, on MTV’s JackAss, or any hit reality show that’s on the air right now.

Just think about it, in the late 1960s Chuck Barris created a host of game shows that were huge hits. The Newlywed Game, The Dating Game and later, The Gong Show. He was called the granddaddy of schlock television — call him or his shows what you want, the truth of the matter is that was the beginning of the type of entertainment most find enjoyable today, and it’s a form of escape. It’s also the choice of the people who watch and participate.

The criticism and the negativity are publicly perceived to be the only real aspects to WSHH courtesy of the media at large — that doesn’t define the creative mind behind the creation of the site and its brand.

Every story has two sides.

Turn the page.

2014-06-27-Q1.jpg

Meet Lee “Q” O’Denat, the founder of WSHH. Q is without a doubt becoming a powerful force in media. He has innovated a website that has entertained and outraged millions of people. Keep in mind that the use of the word outraged comes on the heels of the ever-constant bad press that WSHH receives because of the videos that boast millions of views, shares, tweets, etc.

How and why was this site created? Simple, the universal love of hip-hop, the significance and influence in our culture and how every walk of life can look back on the first hip-hop song they heard and remember exactly what they were doing as they listened to it.

It’s for that reason among others that WSHH is simply put — a juggernaut.

From two highly acclaimed and informative documentaries, a clothing line, being a platform for stars to connect to and share things with their fans, and a future series in the works with Adult Swim — Q has created something that can bring people together.

In our conversation, Q speaks about the beginning, addresses the criticism, and talks about the future of WSHH.

Congratulations on all of the success that you’ve had with WorldStarHipHop [WSHH] — it’s grown by leaps and bounds.

Thank you so much, it’s a lot of hard work.

What was the genesis of WSHH? How did this all come together? What inspired you?

In July of 2005, I was brainstorming for a website idea. I was thinking about all of the time I’ve spent travelling the world and how no matter where I went, people of all walks of life have this intense love for hip-hop. It reminded me just how much hip-hop is the star of the world, hence the name WorldStarHipHop. This was at about the same time that YouTube had joined Google, videos were being noticed and a whole new way of entertaining people was born in that moment. YouTube was a huge inspiration for me when it came to the importance of videos. We also wanted to focus on bringing some of the most entertaining programming from cable to the web, and we were the first to do that.

When you look back on where you started all of all this, reflect on how identifiable a brand that it’s become — what are your thoughts? Did you anticipate the level of success that you’ve achieved?

Not exactly. I didn’t think that with the site being so uniquely different that it would attract the following that it has. At the time that we launched, most of the other sites were pretty cookie-cutter from the respect that they all had a niche, and they stuck to it.

To what do you attribute WSHH’s success?

People love to watch and share things with and about their favorite celebrities. We wanted to create something that would show that these stars are just like us, they make mistakes and they have fun just like you and I. We like to bring the uncut version of what is happening out there.

Your sources don’t necessarily need verification because it’s caught all right there on video.

Nothing caught on camera can be denied, it’s right there in front of you — and you can’t question it. I believe that has contributed to WorldStar’s organic growth in popularity.

It’s interesting, many people compare WorldStar to that of an online tabloid. Yet, as we just said, your sources are the real deal. It’s all right there and that sets you guys apart from the competition. So, in that you’re not a tabloid, in what category would you place the site?

I see us as an entertainment news website. We don’t just cover celebrities, we cover everyday people like you and I. We give the people a look at everyone. Unlike the cable news networks on television, we don’t chase a story or an event for ratings. Bizarre things are happening all over the world in communities all over, rich and poor — we bring that to those who frequent our website, regardless of who they are.

That brings us to the user-submitted content — it’s funny, it’s edgy, it’s controversial, and as a result quite a bit of the content has been met with some harsh criticism. Out of the thousands of videos you guys get every day, was there ever anything that was just so bad that it gave you pause?

Yes, there have been quite a few videos that have come my way like that. Every day when people go to work, church, or where ever else they go, they put up a front and they put on a mask. Technology has given people the ability to show how they truly behave. There’s always going to be something like that, in many respects it’s a lot like reality TV. There are things that we receive that truly make me sad. When I say that, I mean sad from the perspective of, “Wow, these kinds of things are happening in our world.” There are a quite a few things that we don’t post because it’s way too crazy, and sad.

As you said earlier, WSHH is an entertainment/news website that happens to also be a video aggregator. It goes without saying that you have competition in that arena. As far as video aggregators are concerned, there isn’t too much of a difference in terms of what type of content WorldStar users are submitting vs. those submitting content on YouTube. You’re both attracting high-profile names that use both sites as a platform to reach their fans, you both get some of what I like to refer to as the “horrors of humanity” when it comes to user-submitted content. Yet, WorldStar is targeted with the majority of the negative feedback. It’s easy to come to the natural assumption, however, there is an equal possibility that it isn’t that reason. If it’s not that reason, then what is the reason? Why do you think that WorldStar is targeted for its user-submitted content?

It’s hip-hop and anything with that name is going to be scrutinized a bit more. Whether people like it or not, we’re showing the realities in which we live. People don’t like the truth, and sometimes it’s in your face. This country has become so obsessed with trying to deliver everything wrapped up in a nice blanket like we’re in a wonderland, and we show everyone that is not the case.

I just saw a video that really showed the lighter side of WorldStar, a grandpa that was dancing better than most people half his age. I was personally jealous of his rhythm. I know that there are quite a few things like that video are on there and that WSHH as a company has done to give back. What can you tell us about that?

It’s true. People seem to accentuate the negative and ignore the positive. There are plenty of positive things on our site such as that video and many acts of kindness that show the best that humanity has to offer. Our charity events that we put on, the documentary that we did about life in the Chicago hip-hop community and the violence within it.

Congratulations on the success of the documentary. I thought it was excellent.

Thank you very much.

Despite all of the criticism, WSHH is a tremendous success, and I truly believe as a source of entertainment deservedly so. What’s in store for the future of WorldStarHipHop both as a site and as a brand?

We are really starting to focus on bringing our fans and followers high quality original content, such as the documentary you mentioned earlier – that’s called The Field: Violence, Hip-Hop, and Hope for Chicago. We also did a really powerful documentary about the increase in deaths as a result of drunk driving, Please Pass the Keys, and I’m very proud of what we’re doing to tell the stories of these people who aren’t celebrities on a global scale. Earlier this year, we launched the WorldStarHipHop clothing line which is doing well. We really want to continue to connect with our fans and followers on multiple levels and I believe that we are well-poised to do just that.

'Community' Season 6 To Air On Yahoo

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yahoo says it’s giving the sitcom “Community” a sixth season online.

Yahoo and Sony Pictures Television announced Monday that the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, will serve as an executive producer for 13 new episodes. The companies say cast members including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs and Yvette Nicole Brown will come along as the axed NBC show moves online to Yahoo Screen this fall.

In a statement paraphrasing Mark Twain, McHale says reports of the show’s cancellation were “greatly exaggerated.”

“Community” is about a group of friends who come together at a community college with an iffy pedigree. The comedy has loyal followers but too few for NBC, which dropped it from next season’s schedule.

Yahoo credits passionate “Community” fans with keeping the show alive.
