Facebook Home Android Launcher’s Future Looks Bleak

HTC First Facebook Home 01 640x425

Last year there were countless rumors about a “Facebook phone.” While the social network did not build a smartphone, it did make a launcher for Android devices. It was called Facebook Home. The launcher came pre-installed on HTC First, a “Facebook phone” of sorts that was a colossal flop. Even though Facebook Home hasn’t been yanked yet there haven’t been any major updates for the past few months. A new report suggests that Facebook has actually disbanded the team of engineers that was originally attached to this project.

Citing two people familiar with the matter, the New York Times reports that the original team is no longer working on Facebook Home. It hasn’t been updated since January and it doesn’t look like one is in the works.

On the other hand, Facebook itself tells The Verge that there’s still a team at the company working on Home. The possibility exists that it might be a completely different team, one that isn’t really dedicated to the ill-fated project. Facebook had promised monthly updates for Home but there haven’t been any since January.

Facebook Home is still available for download from Google Play, though its reviews are likely to put off any potential users. The launcher was meant to put users’ Facebook activity right on the homescreen of their devices, and while initially there was a lot of buzz about it, soon after the launch we user interest evaporating.

While Facebook claims that work continues on Home, it remains to be the seen if the company decides to sunset it for good. It would no doubt be hard to win back users that have left due to a poor experience. Even

Google Hangouts Plugin Will Not Be Needed On Chrome Anymore

google hangouts ios android chrome jpg 640x312

Google brought its communication services under the Hangouts banner not too long ago, it is now a one-stop solution for instant messaging between Android devices and computers as well as video calls. Unfortunately those who used the service on Google’s own Chrome browser would require a Google Hangouts plugin before they were able to video chat. It seems troublesome in this day and age to make users download plugins if they can use a specific service. The good news is that Chrome users will no longer require a plugin to video chat via Hangouts.

Yesterday an update was rolled out that made it much more easier to start Hangouts video calls. Users will be able to launch Hangouts in Chrome without first having to download and install a plugin. Simply clicking on the Hangout icon is good enough.

Since Chrome is a Google property its no surprise that this luxury will only be limited to users of its web browser. Those who use Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or any other browser will be required to download and install a plugin before they can video chat. Unless they’re willing to change browsers, they’ll be stuck with the plugin for now.

The aforementioned update is currently available for all Chrome Dev and Canary users. It will be available for all Chrome users over the coming weeks, so just sit tight and wait for the browser to be updated.

Microsoft Smartwatch With 11 Sensors Coming This October

microsoft smartwatch 640x480

Since smartwatches are all the rage these days it wouldn’t be shocking to see Microsoft come out with one of its own. We have heard many rumors about the folks at Redmond working on a new wearable device. As per the latest, the company’s new smartwatch might be released this October. It is believed that the Microsoft smartwatch will come with 11 sensors as well as multi-platform support.

Multi-platform compatibility will truly set the company’s wearable device apart. It means that the Microsoft smartwatch will be able to work with Windows Phone, iOS and Android. One is its own platform while the others are the two most popular mobile platforms in the market right now.

It may be different from most of the smartwatches we have seen up till now. Rumor has it that the display would be on the underside of the band, and it may not even be that large, the device is said to be more along the lines of a fitness-band.

The 11 onboard sensors would no doubt feed health and fitness related data to the connected mobile device. Smartwatches these days are often judged by the amount of sensors that they have onboard, and Microsoft’s device seems to have more than its fair share.

Multiple rumors suggest that October is when Microsoft will show off its new wearable device. There hasn’t been any confirmation or even a hint from Redmond itself so it would be best to take this with a grain of salt.

Though with the smartwatch race heating up, it is about time that Microsoft made its entry into this market.

XOLO’s New Windows Phone Handset Claims ‘World’s Lightest’ Crown

xolo win q900s

We often see manufacturers boast how they have been able to make the “world’s lightest” smartphone and now Indian manufacturer XOLO is claiming that crown. XOLO was due to launch a new Windows Phone handset. It has come out with the Win Q900s, its first ever Windows Phone device. It weighs in at just 100g, so XOLO is quick to point out that this is “clearly the lightest smartphone” available in the market at this point in time.

To be fair that claim isn’t false. For example the iPhone 5s comes in at 112g, even the Galaxy S4 mini is a tad bit heavier at 107g. But then again most customers don’t bother themselves with such minute details, its the specifications and performance that they’re more concerned about.

Here XOLO Win Q900s stands behind the pack. It has a 4.7-inch 1,280×720 pixel resolution IPS LCD display adorned with scratchless Dragontrail Glass, which can also be found on the likes of Sony Xperia Z2.

Under the hood beats a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 1.2GHz quadcore processor with 1GB of RAM and an Adreno 302 GPU. Apart from 8GB of onboard storage users get a microSD card slot for external expansion up to 32GB. An 8 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front camera are also found onboard.

4G LTE is missing, but it supports HSPA+, has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, all of which is backed by an 1,800mAh battery which XOLO claims takes only 2.4 hours to be fully charged.

The Win Q900s ships in the second week of July down in India for roughly $200. XOLO hasn’t said if it has any plans of bringing the smartphone to the global market.

Moto Maker Will Reportedly Be Available For Moto 360

Moto 360 smartwatch 04 640x384

Many of us had hoped that Motorola would talk in detail about the much awaited Moto 360 smartwatch at Google I/O 2014 but that didn’t happen. Even though other Android Wear smartwatches from LG and Samsung went live for pre-order, it was said that the Moto 360 will be made available later this summer. No one knows exactly when that is going to happen, but a new report claims that Moto Maker customization options will be offered for the smartwatch as well.

Motorola unveiled Moto Maker last year as part of its Moto X announcement. Its an online customization studio that lets customers put their personal touches to the device. It is also possible to purchase devices straight from Moto Maker.

PhoneArena hears from a “source close to Motorola” that Moto Maker support is one the cards for Moto 360. Though it is unclear what sort of customization options would be offered for the smartwatch. Perhaps there will be choices for the watch color and wristbands, and maybe even metal bands, but this is pure speculation for now.

The other rumor merely reiterates what we have already heard quite a few times before. Motorola is apparently looking to launch its smartwatch alongside the Moto X+1, the successor to last year’s Moto X flagship. There have been countless leaks about the successor but so far it hasn’t been confirmed by Motorola when its destined for the market.

Some believe that August is the month when Motorola makes these announcements. It seems possible as last year’s flagship was also unveiled in August.

Beauty Matters and 7 Drawings That Help Explain Why

When our children were younger, my husband and I had date night on Sundays. If I was feeling emotional and didn’t know why, I would take a drawing pad and colorful pens with me to dinner. In the restaurant, I would draw stick figures to express myself to my husband. I’m joyful about X, upset about Y, conflicted about A, B and C and so on. To his credit, he listened and smiled while I drew. This is when I first learned that I could say a lot with stick figures.

These days, I’m still using drawings to process emotions and counsel myself. Recently, when I sat down with pen in hand, I found that I was writing notes to myself about beauty. My stick figures were giving me messages about the importance of seeing and cherishing beauty in the world.

By beauty I mean the physical, “holy smokes can you really believe that a moon rise can be that seriously sacred and serene?” I also mean the beauty of human interactions. I was at an outdoor free yoga class on Saturday to celebrate the summer solstice and I watched a mother and her 4-year-old son practicing yoga together. He copied every move she made. When he laughed, she smiled — the mom was upside down, the son was upside down, but the world was right side up.

Beauty can be tiny, specific interactions and as wide ranging as sounds: tastes, touches, a thought, a prayer, a silence, a gong, a gesture, an action. Beauty is everywhere, and here’s what I’ve decided based on the messages my stick figures have been offering me: I don’t ask myself often enough to notice beauty and soak it in.

It seems I’m good at going over and over in my mind when someone has hurt my feelings. (I have drawings to prove it. With the stroke of a pen, I can draw piles of cow pies on the offending party’s head.) I am also capable of not being able to draw. Some news hits me like an 18-wheeler and I’m left flattened at how horrible humans can be to each other. “Retreat! Retreat!” my inner intercom system says.

But when I do crawl out from wherever it is I go, and I start to draw, the pictures tell me what it is I must do. I’d like to share some of these drawings with you.

First note to self: When horrible things happen in the world, I want to block my ears and cover my eyes, but the best thing I can do is to go out into the world and be kind. Any act of kindness is beautiful.

2014-06-24-horrible_pic.png

Second note to self: Sometimes I miss the beauty of a moment because I’m listening to brain noise: sorrow, fear and worry. Note to self: Pay attention. Beauty is everywhere.

2014-06-24-brainnoise_pic.png

Third note to self: Try really, really hard NOT to step on beauty. Beauty matters.

2014-06-24-dontsteponbty_pic.png

Fourth note to self: When my heart breaks, it’s best to fill the broken places with beauty.

2014-06-24-heartbrks_pic.png

Fifth note to self: Let the simple beauty of a flower make your day.

2014-06-24-flowerbty_pic.png

Sixth note to self: Some days it’s important to hold onto beauty with all that you’ve got.

2014-06-24-holdonto_pic.png

Seventh note to self: Life’s goal: Let go and smile.

2014-06-24-Lifes_goal_pic.png

I included the last picture, because every smile is beautiful and easy to share with anyone at any time.

I’d love to hear from you on what beauty fills your soul.
