Broadway Lights Will Be Dimmed In Elaine Stritch's Memory

NEW YORK (AP) — Broadway marquees will be dimmed in memory of a Tony- and Emmy-winning actress who epitomized New York and the theater world.

Elaine Stritch died Thursday at age 89 in her home state of Michigan. She was far from her longtime adopted home. But Broadway — and New York —immediately sent their love. The marquees of the Great White Way will be dimmed for one minute at 7:45 p.m. Eastern on Friday.

The feisty actress found new fans as Alec Baldwin’s mother on television’s “30 Rock.” But she was best known for her stage work — especially her candid one-woman memoir and in the Stephen Sondheim musical “Company.”

Broadway League Executive Director Charlotte St. Martin says Stritch will always be remembered as an important part of Broadway’s rich history.

Did LeBron James Make the Right Call in Returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Answer by Christopher Patrick, Played Power Forward in 7th Grade

Yes. Super Teams, like the Heat were, have an expiration date due to the high contracts of the core players and the number of miles on your ring-chasing veteran filler. It is tough to build a super team through free agency and have it last over multiple free agencies. I can’t think of an example of where this has worked over a decade.

I think LeBron James recognized that if he stayed with the Heat, every couple years, they would have to reload their roster with new star free agents or find new vets who are looking to chase rings at the minimum – so there was an impermanence to the roster that LeBron would always be playing with. I think LeBron is looking at the next 8 to 10 years and thinking that he wants to be on a team that is built to last.

It’s fortunate that Cavs are his original team and in his home state. The Cavs also have a ton of young talent (and assets) that can (hopefully) shoulder more of the burden that LeBron carries as his abilities wane over the next decade.

Whether or not you think Wiggins is the next great player, he’ll be able to shoulder some of the perimeter defense duties that LeBron would otherwise carry on any other roster on day one. For the next decade, LeBron is no longer expected to guard the best perimeter player over the course of a decade. On one front, this allows LeBron the benefit to explore and maximize his abilities in other parts of the game, but it also lets him save some miles for future seasons and playoffs.

LeBron has also never played on a team with a better point guard (except for on Team USA) and I think having Kyrie Irving allows LeBron to not have to be the primary play maker on offense on every single play for 10+ years. It will be interesting to see LeBron – a play making genius – play off the ball more regularly. The most interesting basketball narrative, to me, will be to see what LeBron looks like in an offense where he doesn’t HAVE to have the ball in his hands all the time for the offense to make plays.

There are definitely some open-questions with Cleveland: Can they find somebody to protect the rim other than LeBron? Does it make sense to sign another max-level free agent? If so, how can you do so without sacrificing long-term assets? How will LeBron fare in a Princeton-style offense? Will LeBron exhibit patience as these young stars develop? And will LeBron be able to help Wiggins and Waiters and Bennett grow into being great players in their own right, or will they always be third fiddle to LeBron and his own shadow?

When you build a franchise through free agency, your roster constantly has to be re-tooled as players either lose their ability, retire or have inefficient contracts that have to be renegotiated because of the salary cap. From LeBron’s perspective, it becomes very difficult to see through the fog of the next decade at what the Heat’s roster might be. Are they constantly chasing the next en vogue max-contract star in free agency? How will their game complement LeBron’s? Who is going to shoulder some of LeBron’s responsibilities s as his abilities fade?

Although still in his prime, I think LeBron wants to be on a team where he isn’t expected to be the focal point of every single aspect of the game every single night for the next decade. Eventually, LBJ’s John Galt-like motor will begin to sputter and I think the assets on the Cavs will allow it to run longer than it might otherwise if he were to go to a franchise that regularly has to retool their roster exclusively through free agency.

Love Is All You Need to Thrive

As a touted NYC “professional” and “successful” businesswomen who runs three clinics, sees about 50 patients per week, runs her own beauty line and just released her third book, Yes, You Can Get Pregnant: Natural Ways To Improve Your Fertility Now and Into Your 40s, I still manage to thrive in my personal and professional life and, most importantly, practice what I preach to all those who follow my message.

What’s my message? When you are in optimal health — mentally, emotionally, nutritionally and physically — abundant health, vitality and joy can be yours. Plain and simple, my message is all about balance and prioritizing YOU. It’s about loving yourself. If loving yourself and honoring your health are not the No. 1 priorities in your life, then all else is suboptimal.

I am often asked, “How do you do it all?” Honestly, I didn’t give it much thought until I started getting that question. When I broke it down for the first time, I realized three really important guiding forces in my life that keep me thriving:

1. I focus on what I love in all that I do. And, I am constantly practicing gratitude.
2. I have a tremendous passion for guiding others towards optimal health.
3. I have self-love.

And, it’s this third point, having self-love, that the other two guiding forces stem from. Self-love, by which I mean loving and respecting your health, your hearts desires, your relationship with yourself and your relationship with the world around you, is the key to “doing it all” and maintaining balance. When one has self-love they are guided by their hearts desire more than the social norm; they are in tune with the rhythm of their life and the world around them; they are living in the present moment; they are living from a place of gratitude and appreciation.

I’m sure for most living from a place of self-love sounds much easier said than done and a bit hooey. However, it can be easily implemented into your life in three easy steps:

1. Be present. The most effective way to remain present in your life on a daily basis is to adopt a daily meditation practice. It can be as easy as sitting quietly and breathing for five minutes at some point during your day and taking what I coined in my first book, Chill Out and Get Healthy, a “chill out and check in break,” or taking more time and sitting for 20 to 30 minutes twice per day. The beauty of meditation is it doesn’t require anything other than you sitting still and breathing. Keep it simple: If co-workers can sneak out for a coffee break, you can sneak a meditation break. Another really useful tool I use in my daily life to keep myself present is to tune in and really notice “where you are,” meaning, are you in the meeting you are currently in or truly engaged in the conversation you are currently in or are you thinking about your next meeting or your after work event? When I notice that I am onto the next thing rather than in the present moment, I say quietly to myself, “Aimee, where are you?” and that brings me right back to engaging fully in the present moment.

2. Be kind to yourself. Plain and simple, when you love yourself, you are kind to yourself. When you treat your body like a sacred temple — mentally, nutritionally and physically — your health and your life will thrive. The best way to practice this is to again, tune in and be present. Hear the inner dialogue and catch yourself when you are being hard on yourself. In the moment when your berating or criticizing yourself stop, take a deep breath and say it more kindly or better yet just say to yourself, “I love you and you are doing the best you can do.” Additionally, when you are making food choices or lifestyle choices ask yourself, is this serving my body — my temple — in the best way? Are you eating food for nourishment and fuel or to fill a void? Are you having that second cocktail because you are in a happy place or because you want to numb out? A great way to tune into self love and kindness is to point out to yourself three (or more) things each day that you like about yourself — for example, “I am good at what I do.” Or, “I am helping others.” Or “I treat my body well.” Be kind to yourself, you deserve it.

3. Practice gratitude each and every day. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to live from a place of self-love. My recommendation is that every day, upon waking, list (in your head or in a notebook or even in a text message to yourself) five things that you are grateful for. They can be super simple or super deep, from: I am grateful for my seven hours of sleep to I am grateful for all the love that surrounds me. Getting into a daily habit of practicing gratitude before you start your day can really shift your mental state from one of mundane and mediocre to one of joy and presence.

You may not currently be in a place of loving your job or having passion for what you do or surrounded by the best relationships but I can assure you if you turn inward and begin a daily practice of self-love, gratitude and present moment awareness your life will begin to shift from a place of just living to a place of joyful thriving. We all deserve to be happy, to thrive and really truly love who we are, where we are and be excited for where we are headed. Take time each day and be present, be kind to yourself and practice gratitude — you are worth it.

One Fast Cat: A Giant Hamster Wheel for Cats

Do you have a fat cat? Don’t just let it lay around all day. Send it to the gym with this oversize exercise wheel for cats. It’s called One Fast Cat and it will cost you $200. That’s a steep price for a cat gym membership, but it’s either that or you have Jabba the Cat laying around eating toads all day.

It is made from recycled plastics and the inside surface is made from a special foam to prevent claws from catching, allowing your cat to run naturally. In addition, it’s easy to set up and breaks down for easy shipment.

Regardless of your intentions, this may be the most expensive cat toy your cat ignores. If I know cats, most will just sniff this thing and then never look at it again.

* – The cat in the video not typical. He was paid to exercise. Mine would never break a sweat.
