goTenna Device Will Let You Send Text Messages Even When There Is No Signal

goTenna 2014 07 17 01Don’t you just hate it when you are out and for some reason your phone just won’t let you send messages or make calls due to poor reception? This can be pretty dangerous especially if you’re in an unknown location, or if you’re hiking and you got lost. Well a company called goTenna is hoping to change that with a device that will allow you to text or share your GPS coordinates even in places where you have no signal.

This is done by pairing the device (pictured above) with your smartphone via Bluetooth, which will then turn your phone into a low-frequency radio with a range of up to 50 miles. From there and through an iOS or Android app, it will allow users to send text messages or share your GPS location over a free ad hoc network with other goTenna users.

This means that the person receiving your message will require a goTenna device themselves and be at least within range for it to work. Like we said this could come in handy for hikers and adventurers to tend to wander into remote locations where cell reception might not necessarily be the best.

If you’d like to learn more or place an order, head on over to goTenna’s website where you will be able to purchase a pair of goTenna devices for $150. Right now the company has discounted the device by 50%, so once the offer runs out, it will be sold at $300 per pair.

Deezer Does Away With Desktop Premium Plan, Now Offers Free Or Premium+ Subscription

deezer logoIf you’ve always wanted to use Deezer but you did not feel like paying for the desktop-only premium subscription plan, you might be pleased to learn that Deezer has officially done away with the premium plan, leaving pretty much only two tiers of listening to music: free and Premium+, with the latter priced at $9.99 a month.

According to a Deezer spokesperson, “Until recently Deezer offered a Premium service – ad free listening on the Web app. We no longer offer this as our listeners needs have changed… We feel the demand for a Web-only premium service is no longer required.”

Deezer adds that customers who are paying $4.99 a month for the desktop-only plan can remain on that plan if they want to, but future users and those who sign up after the 10th of July will have only the free or Premium+ plans to choose from. In some ways this is a boon for current subscribers who are paying half the amount to listen to ad-free music on their computers.

However if they were to switch to mobile, they’d have to put up with ads or pay the $9.99 subscription, but we guess if you don’t mind the occasional ad, which makes it feel a lot like listening to radio, then we guess it’s not such a bad deal at the end of the day. So, anyone planning to get their hands on Deezer after this announcement?

Apple Patent Describes Using Behavioral Habits To Enhance Security

touchid scan fingerprint2 20130910 640x384The way we all use our phones differs from user to user. For example some of us like to constantly kill off all running apps every hour, some of us like to keep Bluetooth enabled, and the way we type things and send messages will also differ from user to user. Well thanks to a recently published patent from Apple, it seems that they are exploring the idea of using a user’s behavior to enhance the device’s security.

Like we said earlier, different users use their phones differently, and based on that, Apple’s patent describes a system in which the phone will be able to detect when someone else who is not the owner is using the device. From there, the phone will either prompt the user to enter a password to identify themselves, or request for a Touch ID scan to ensure it is the owner using their phone.

The phone will also be able to send a notification to a third-party service who will then be able to alert the original owner that their phone might have been compromised. This can come in handy in the event that a phone is stolen and the user has not bothered with a security code or enabled Touch ID.

It can also alert users to possible spying on their device, such as when they leave their phones unattended and someone else is snooping around their handset for possible sensitive information for work or personal reasons. Apple has made great strides in protecting their devices through features such as Touch ID and Activation Lock, with the latter feature being praised by the government and has also led to a decrease in iPhone theft.

There’s no way of telling if and when Apple plans on implementing this feature into future iOS devices, but what do you guys think? Will it be good enough to deter thieves and busy bodies from snooping around on your device?

Long, Complex Passwords Might Not Be The Best Idea, According To Security Researchers

germany accounts hackedAs we’re sure you’ve all come across a list of passwords that have been deemed the worst passwords. This is because some of these passwords are easy and obvious, which allows anyone to log into your account since it doesn’t really take a genius to figure out some of them. This is why security researchers have suggested using more complex passwords which would make it harder for your amateur hacker to figure out.

However according to a recent report by two Microsoft researchers – Dinei Florencio and Cormac Herley, along with Paul C. van Oorschot from Carleton University, they have suggested that perhaps using long and complex passwords might not necessarily be the way to go. Their report, Password Portfolios and the Finite-Effort User: Sustainably Managing Large Numbers of Accounts, basically takes a look at the best established practices for choosing passwords and whether or not they make sense.

According to their findings, it seems to be a mixed response. Basically the idea is that we should use simple passwords that we can remember for accounts and services that don’t contain critical information, like our credit card details, banking information, home address, and so on. Such services could be like forums where you won’t need to enter a lot of personal information when you sign up.

They claim that by using simple passwords for not-so-important websites, it frees up mental capacity to remember long and complex passwords where it really matters, like your PayPal account, your iTunes account, your bank account, and so on. Their research also seems to reject the idea of using a password management system, like 1Pass or LastPass, claiming that if the password management service is hacked, the rest of their passwords would be stolen along with it.

It’s actually an interesting proposal and it definitely goes against the grain and convention, but what do you guys think?

MIT Students Create 3D Printer That Can Print Ice Cream

We’ve seen 3D printers do all sorts of things, ranging from printing bones, to printing gadgets, and to some extent even food, but it looks like 3D printers will soon be able to start printing ice cream! Yes, you read that right, soon everyone’s favorite frozen confectionary will be 3D printed, although apart from the ability to customize it, we’re not sure if it will be an improvement.

The idea to 3D print ice cream was cooked up by a group of MIT students – Kyle Hounsell, Kristine Bunker, and David Donghyun Kim. The printer was actually created as part of their class project in additive manufacturing, and basically what they did was they took a Cuisinart soft-serve ice cream machine and attached it to a Solidoodle 3D printer.

Now in order for the students to maintain the shape of the ice cream they were trying to print, they had to pump a continuous stream of liquid nitrogen over the ice cream to keep it from melting as it laid out shapes layer by layer.

It’s a pretty awesome and fun idea although like we said, we’re not sure if there is a point to 3D printing ice cream other than for the novelty of it, as you can see in the image above where they managed to create an ice cream shaped like a star. There are still some modifications needed before it can be used commercially, but it’s still a fun idea nonetheless.

Epic-Looking Pillow Fight From 'Pitch Perfect 2' Must Make It Into The Movie, It Must

Of all the amazing things we expect from “Pitch Perfect 2” next year, this over-the-top pillow fight scene takes the cake. Anna Kendrick posted the following incredible photo to her Instagram account Thursday night, July 17, captioning it:

“All these bitches wrap tomorrow and leave me behind…… I totally H♥TE them.”

Though unclear from her caption whether that’s just the ladies’ way of unwinding after a long shoot, Kendrick’s costar Brittany Snow posted a similar photo — with a somewhat more telling caption.

“Because @annakendrick47 already posted it & captured this as well…. We do our own stunts here on #PitchPerfect2 #fightscene #actionMovie,” Snow wrote.

Alleged NVIDIA Shield Tablet Leaked

shieldtabSo we had heard the rumors that NVIDIA was planning a successor to the NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console in the form of a Shield tablet. It’s an interesting rumor since a gaming tablet would be a pretty unique take on gaming as there aren’t that many gaming tablets out there in the market today.

Now thanks to a recent post by @evleaks, we could be getting our very first look at the NVIDIA Shield tablet, as you can see in the leaked press rendering in the image above. Upon first glance the tablet reminds us a bit of the HTC One M8 with its design and its front-facing stereo speakers, although in some ways it does resemble the NVIDIA Tegra Note tablet as well, except in a different color.

According to the rumors, we can look forward to a 7.9-inch display with 2GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA Tegra K1 CPU on board along with Unreal Engine 4 capabilities. The display resolution of the tablet remains unknown for now, but here’s hoping to a high-resolution one. It is also unclear if NVIDIA will be making the Shield tablet or if they will be sourcing it out to other OEMs and will just be providing a reference design.

Either way NVIDIA did hint that they would be unveiling the device by the end of the year, so do check back with us at a later date for the details! In the meantime what do you guys make of it?
