This Is What A Childless Society Would Look Like

As of this writing, the U.S. population stands at 318,463,083 people … and counting. While all predictions indicate that the population will grow through 2050 — along with aging and growing more diverse — this assumes that nothing catastrophic will happen in the ensuing decades.

But what if we had a fertility crisis on a global scale? How would that affect our nation’s population?

What if the next endangered species was us?

That’s the scenario that Lifetime’s brand-new series “The Lottery” brings to the forefront of the conversation. In the below graphic, we’ve used data from the U.S. Census and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to bring this hypothetical crisis from the provenance of science fiction into cold, hard reality.

Tune in for the series premiere on Sunday, July 20 at 10/9c to see this dystopia come to life.

Please note that all extinction predictions are calculated from 2010 U.S. Census data and the 2010 CDC report on death rates by age. We have assumed that the birth rate decreases to zero in 2011 as death rates remain constant. External factors such as immigration and sudden changes in death rate have been excluded.

Don’t forget to tune in for the series premiere of Lifetime’s “The Lottery” on Sunday, July 20 at 10/9c.

Joep Lange, AIDS Expert And Former President Of The International AIDS Society, Died In Plane Crash

Joep Lange, a pioneer in the field of AIDS research and the former president of the International AIDS Society, was killed in a plane crash on July 17, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Lange dedicated his life to researching HIV. Since 1983, he has been studying the virus and working to develop possible treatments. According to his official bio, Lange was the architect and principal investigator of several pivotal trials on antiretroviral therapy and on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Joep had an absolute commitment to HIV treatment and care in Asia and Africa,” Professor David A Cooper stated. “The joy in collaborating with Joep was that he would always bring a fresh view, a unique take on things, and he never accepted that something was impossible to achieve.”

From 1992 to 1995, Lange was chief of clinical research and drug development at the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva. He was president of the International AIDS Society from 2002 to 2004 as well as the founder and the chairman of the PharmAccess Foundation, which is dedicated to improving access to health care in Africa, and the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Antiviral Therapy.

The author of more than 350 papers in peer-reviewed journals, Lange was the 2007 recipient of the Eijkman Medal for his achievements in tropical medicine and international health.

At the time of his death, Lange was a professor of internal medicine, the head of the Department of Global Health at the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam and executive scientific director of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development.

Dr. Seema Yasmin, a staff writer at the Dallas Morning News, took to Twitter to praise Lang’s professional accomplishments and the love he had for his five daughters.

“Ask anyone who knew him. Joep was often times cooking for his five girls while on conference calls discussing HIV,” Dr. Yasmin wrote. “I asked him why he worked so much. He said, ‘Do you know how much it costs to buy shoes for five girls?’ He was a kind man and a true humanitarian.”

According to The Australian, Lange was one of about 100 people on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 who were heading to Melbourne to attend the International AIDS Conference. The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot out of the sky near the Russia-Ukraine border, killing all 298 people on board.

Lange’s partner Jacqueline was also among the crash victims, The Kirby Institute confirmed.

Toaster Uses Your Selfie To Create Personalized Pieces Of Toast

Lance Toast 640x359It seems that the trend of selfies is not going to be going away anytime soon, so if you’d like for a way to immortalize your selfie on a piece of toast, you will be able to do so thanks to the folks at the Vermont Novelty Toaster Corporation. Making art on toast is not new, as the company has released several designs in the past.

However if you’d like a more personalized piece of art, namely your face, you will be pleased to learn that the company has started taking orders for a selfie toaster which will set you back a relatively affordable $75. We guess some don’t mind paying for the novelty of having their face imprinted on their toast in the mornings.

Basically all the user would have to do is take a high-resolution photo of themselves, preferably against a white background because apparently this makes it easier for the company to create a more accurate image of you. The company will then cut a special metal plate with your face and place it in the toaster, which will then result in your image being burnt onto a piece of bread.

The company expects that the personalized toaster will take about a week to create and ship, so if you’d like to place your order and find out more, head on over to their website for the details!

BBM Beta For Windows Phone Officially Kicks Off

bbm channels1A little over a week ago, BlackBerry announced that they had begun taking registrations for the closed BBM beta test for Windows Phone. Well the good news is that the beta has begun and if you’re one of the lucky few that managed to get in on the beta, you will be able to download the app so do check your emails where the instructions should have been sent to you.

According to reports, BBM beta for Windows Phone is expected to test features like BBID Setup and Log-in, creating a BBM profile, invite a contact and suggested contacts, 1-to-1 and multi-person chats, contact categories, manage settings, BBM groups, pin to start, notifications, and so on.

We’re not sure when BBM will be officially made available to the rest of Windows Phone users or if BlackBerry has plans for an open beta where anyone can participate, but here’s hoping that the current beta goes smoothly so that users will be able to download the app in the near future. The app has also been designed to match the Windows Phone interface, so it will be interesting to see how well-received that approach will be.

BBM for Windows Phone was confirmed earlier this year, several months after it had launched on iOS and Android. Last we heard, the app was scheduled for a release in July but considering that we’re almost two-thirds into the month, we’re not sure if they will be able to mee that deadline.

Microsoft Offers $100 To Trade-In Older Consoles For The Xbox One

xbox one 640x365We expect that there are probably many gamers out there who are still holding out on purchasing a next-gen console. It could be its price, it could be the lack of titles, but if price is the main factor holding you back, you might be interested to learn that Microsoft has recently announced a new promotion.

The promotion will basically allow gamers to trade-in their old console and receive up to $100 credit towards their Xbox One purchase. According to the terms and conditions of the deal, “To receive maximum trade-in value, you must trade-in a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 E, Xbox 360 S console and purchase an Xbox One at the same time.”

This is actually the second time that Microsoft has launched such a promotion, with the first one taking place earlier this year where gamers could trade in their older PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 console and get $100 credit towards a new Xbox One. However with the Xbox One now priced at $399, this essentially makes the console $299 which we have to say is a pretty damn good deal!

The offer has kicked off on the 14th of July and will run until the 31st of August, so you’ve still got a little over a month to take advantage of the deal. Will this deal help Microsoft sell more Xbox One consoles? Well considering that they saw sales double with the price cut to $399, a price tag of $299 certainly makes it a very compelling purchase.

7 Searing Details From Matthew Sandusky's Emotional Interview With Oprah (VIDEO)

Breaking a three-year silence, Jerry Sandusky’s adopted son Matthew spoke to Oprah about the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, a man that Matthew and many others once viewed as a hero. Though he originally stood by the former Penn State assistant football coach during a grand jury investigation, Matthew came forward to police halfway through Sandusky’s subsequent criminal trial in 2012. It was a pivotal moment not just for the now-married father of four, but also for the case: Because of Matthew’s damaging revelations, Sandusky decided not to testify on his own behalf.

Coming forward back then and risking attacks on his wife and children was not an easy decision, as Matthew tells Oprah. Even now, he wonders if it may have been better to stay silent.

“I can handle people attacking me. I handled the abuse. I can take it. [But] my wife is an innocent. My children, they’re innocent,” he says through tears. “Absolutely, the simpler answer would have been for me to keep it, for me to deal with it on my own. To never tell anybody.”

But he didn’t keep Sandusky’s secret. And now, Matthew shares his story and the sexual abuse he endured for years. Below are seven searing details he revealed to Oprah on Thursday night.

Matthew still remembers the first moment Sandusky made him feel uncomfortable.
“When he picked me up for [a] football game for the first time, he would just reach over and his hand would be on your knee… Where I came from, you didn’t even touch each other. You didn’t even hug… So a person putting their hand on my knee, especially a grown man who has no relation to me, was awkward and weird. But I thought maybe that’s just the way that his family was.”

Sandusky tried to mask his inappropriate touching with roughhousing.
“He just progressed through going up my leg at summer camps. Being in your shorts. Throwing you, grabbing on your genitals as he throws you… After we had played racquetball we had to take a shower… During those times is when a lot of the sexual abuse really happened.”

How Sandusky picked Matthew out of a camp of hundreds of other children.

Sandusky followed a “bedtime ritual” during Matthew’s overnight visits in the home.
“You would always just be in your underwear or shorts to sleep. And then from there, he would go to tickling you. He would go to blowing on your belly. He would go to pulling you off the bed and rolling onto the floor with you and kind of wrestling around. As it progresses, it becomes more sexual in nature. He goes from blowing on your stomach or chest, he moves further south until he’s in your inner thighs. And then he moves up to your genital area. And as you go further with that, then it’s not blowing anymore. Then it’s… it’s oral sex.”

Matthew tried to use logic to explain away Sandusky’s behavior.
“In my mind, the only thing that I could tell myself was that he was gay. That’s the only thing that I could tell myself, and I wanted him off of me.”

Sandusky used manipulation tactics to keep Matthew silent, even after Matthew’s suicide attempt at age 17.
“The manipulation, the control, the hand on the leg anytime I was in the car, him pulling me off to a room anytime I was at the house, he would always pull me into a separate room to speak alone. Those were the times when he’s reinforcing. He’s reinforcing and checking in with me to make sure that I’m not speaking.”

The real reason Matthew was legally adopted by the Sanduskys when he turned 18.

Matthew believes Sandusky convinced himself he was acting out of love.
“I think that he believed the things that he was doing to us, that was love to him. That was him taking care of us. That was him being there for us when no other person would have been. I truly believe that he believed that he cared and that he was loving us.”

Why no one suspected the abuse going on in the Sandusky home.

He is one of the victims to receive part of Penn State’s $59.7 million payout, but Matthew says he did not come forward for monetary reasons.
“I took it really personally at first that that’s an attack on me that I would do this for the money… I didn’t even want to file a claim against Penn State. I didn’t want to do those things.”

Matthew responds to critics who say he is lying.

Expat Life: The Difference Between Traveling and Moving Abroad

An Original TRAVELBREAK Post by Stephanie Be.

Traveling is like a whimsical romance; exciting unpredictable, and passionate. But moving abroad, you strip the city an it’s local culture revealing its demons and angels. You become vulnerable, dependent, and invested. The lust of wander is compromised by its imperfections and challenges.

Not to romanticize obstacles, but it’s harder to move abroad than is to just go on vacation, and it is absolutely worth it. There’s something undeniably invigorating about making love to a city, over and over until it’s yours. It’s a piece of you.

A look at a changed perspective from stomping the grounds of another culture:

1. You have to give something up.

Regardless, of your relations with your friends, family, and career – life at home won’t pause in the lack of your presence. If you’re studying abroad fall quarter, no football tailgates for you. If you’re working a less traditional job overseas, you might be putting your long-term career on hold. You may miss some birthday parties, or holidays. I’d love to say that it will ALL be there when you come back (if you come back), but some of it might not be. Some friendships might dwindle. But for anything or anyone that you do lose, you’ll have gained that much more confidence, development, independence, friends, memories, and adventure. Risks. Sacrifices. Some things are worth it.

2. You’ll have commitments like school or work.

With exceptions, it’s unlikely that you’re going to reside in another country, just living up Cabo Spring Break on replay. There’s this thing called “responsibility,” and it stalks us without borders. You’ll get a new routine going, and learn to work with people outside of your comfort zone. This non-conventional resume builder is real: your creative problem-solving strategies will increase.

3. You can truly explore the city if you’re actually living there.

Traveling is a sample platter, and moving abroad is a feast. You don’t have to select from the Top Things to Do In XYZ, because you can do them all. Take your time, and do it right! Furthermore, an iconic landmark might become a part of your daily jogging path. You might pick up some local recipes. Or perhaps you’ll indulge in the nightlife by becoming a “regular,” accessing locally exclusive entertainment. You will be around long enough to enjoy seasonal celebrations like festivals, holidays, and sporting events.

4. You’ll get to know locals and other expats.

Without a wolf-pack to cause mischief, you’ll be forced to meet new friends. Some will come through work or school, others through a chat at the pub or metro stop. When we’re home, we aren’t necessarily looking for new close friends. Abroad, you are naturally more open-minded because few friends are physically present in your life. An active willingness to meet others will reflect into new relationships.

5. You’ll learn to be alone.

Between finding somewhere to live, understanding navigation in a new city, securing your routine – getting a hang of life abroad, it may take some time to establish intimate friendships. Even with new pals, you may not have a car abroad, or schedules might be conflicting – whatever it is, there will inevitably be more time that you spend alone. Embrace it. Those moments of solidarity will allow you to get to know yourself.

6. You’re going to be humbled by challenges. Then feel awesome when you overcome them.

This happens both while traveling and while living abroad. You get lost. You get homesick. You struggle with a foreign language (or even with just an accent… are we speaking the same English here, mate). You deal with foreign exchange rates. A simple task can be so much harder! You would think that living abroad, you would master the lifestyle quickly, but it can take a month (or more), to establish a regimen. In other words, you’ll be making the same mistakes, or dealing with the same sh*t over and over again. This can be frustrating. Discouraging. A friendly reminder that you are not invincible, you’ll also feel empowered by how much you can finally accomplish!

7. You’re going to understand your own culture and others’ cultures, ultimately realizing that there’s a lot you don’t know about the world.

There’s a whole globe out there, and you won’t realize how much you do not know until you get out and see how other people live. You’ll register that some people just do things differently. Not only will you learn to be okay with that, but you’ll start to love these differences. If we were all the same, life would be boring anyways.

8. You’re going to value the people closest to you at home, and the complete strangers abroad who have quickly become your best friends.

Distance makes the heart grow fonder, and it takes so much effort to stay in contact with persons at home, that those who can endure it, prove that they really do care about you. Having few people in the new city, you’ll genuinely love them for showing you their town, for taking you in to their hearts, and for looking out for you. Which they will. Being the outsider, you’ll rely on locals to aid your transition in adjusting to the new city, and their self-less kinship will warm your heart. Turns out, you can’t rely on everyone, but someone will always be there for you.

9. It’s going to be fun-tastic.

Discovering places, connecting with people, and experiencing new activities… you’ll never get bored. No matter the degree of your metamorphosis, moving abroad is always a good time. Already being in another hemisphere, you’ll have easier access to more unknown destinations. You’ll also be freed from your society’s expectations. You’ll learn to be yourself once you don’t have your home community’s pressures dictating the life you “should” be living. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from your norm to emancipate your inner-most desires. Moving abroad is such an immense experience, that it cannot be measured by words. You have to try it yourself, to understand it!

10. You are going to be the one with the hot accent.

Point End.

Mexican Consulate Employee Busted Hauling 100 Pounds Of Cocaine Into United States

On the morning of April 25, Jose Moreno Serrano pulled his Dodge SUV into a border checkpoint in Arizona, ostensibly on his way to work at the Mexican Consulate in nearby Yuma.
